BP Launches Ultimate Field Trip

An overview of the 2015 Ultimate Field Trip challenge:

The Problem

The production and processing of oil, gas and biofuels both use and produce large volumes of water.  Much of the produced water contains contaminants that must be treated before the water can be disposed.  Tightening regulations and increased demand for water in many parts of the world are resulting in

increasing costs and risks.  The ability to reuse produced water

or treat it more efficiently could help manage environmental and

energy sustainability challenges.

The Challenge

Identify and develop a novel technical solution that will reduce

the amount of water utilized and/or find an effective use for water

produced from operations.

The Prize

This year's prize is a two-week field trip to Trinidad and Tobago,

where the winning teams will have the opportunity to visit a BP offshore platform, as well as a BP onshore processing facility.

The teams will also spend time visiting sites in Tobago and the

Pigeon Point Heritage Park.

Students from U.S. universities are asked to register a team of

three at www.bp.com/uft/us and are required to complete a short technical quiz by October 10.

A short list of teams will be selected and asked to send in their

competition entry to address this year's challenge.  The successful teams will progress to a campus final in November

and December 2014.  The U.S. National Final, where teams will

go head-to-head, will take place on April 9-10, 2015 at BP's U.S.

headquarters in Houston.

School of the Environment and Sustainability Series

Over the past two years, CU-Boulder has explored prospects for creating greater synergies and fostering collaboration among the many faculty and programs centered on themes in the environment and sustainability.  With commitments from the campus administration, we are moving forward with the creation of a new school that will further advance interdisciplinary scholarship, education, and community engagement in the environment and sustainability.

This fall we are launching our inaugural colloquium series, which will feature forward thinking and inspiring examples of projects that integrate the many dimensions of environmental challenges and solutions.  The School of the Environment and Sustainability Colloquium Series will provide the CU and Boulder community with provocative and insightful conversations that provide compelling illustrations of innovative work in the environment and sustainability taking place in Boulder and elsewhere.

The colloquium series will be held most Wednesdays this fall semester from 3-4:30 pm in the Old Main Chapel.  Light refreshments will be served from 3-3:30 pm, followed by the featured lecture and Q&A from 3:30-4:30 pm.

There is no colloquium on October 1.

This season students can choose among eighteen wildlife, wildland and cultural ecology field studies searching for solutions to environmental and cultural challenges.  Field studies take place in:  Yellowstone, Big Sur (California), Banff (Canada), California Channel Islands, Vancouver Island, Fiji, Belize, South Africa, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Thailand, Nepal, Indian Himalaya, Costa Rica, Panama, Australia, and New Zealand.  Information on all of our programs is available on our website: www.wildlandsstudies.com.  Our email address is [email protected]
