Gwilym Williams Scholarship

SCHOLARSHIPS

If you are a college or graduate student who is preparing for a career either as a/an

ordained minister, certified teacher or educator,

doctor of medicine

then you may qualify for a scholarship grant from the

Gwilym T. Williams Scholarship Fund

This Trust Fund, created over a generation ago by a now deceased PNEC benefactor from Scranton, is administered by the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ. The purpose of this Fund is to provide financial assistance for post-secondary students enrolled in accredited institutions of higher learning, and who are preparing to embark on a career either as an ordained minister, a certified teacher or educator, or a doctor of medicine.

Grants are limited by stipulation of the Trust to students pursuing one of these three career options, and who are also currently members in good standing of a PNEC congregation. Financial assistance will be awarded only to help pay the institution-stipulated costs of tuition and/or housing.

You are required to submit to the PNEC office all application materials (your application, certification of an acceptable program of study, your school's financial bill) before your request will be considered. Application materials must be in our office by October 1st in order to be considered for a grant for the (preceding) summer and/or (current) fall terms, and by March 1st in order to be considered for a grant for the (preceding) winter and/or (current) spring terms. Reimbursement checks will be issued directly to successful applicants. Even if you have received a Gwilym T. Williams scholarship in the past, you must reapply in order to be considered for a new grant. Applicants are awarded a maximum ten grants for undergraduate work, and ten (more) grants for post-graduate studies.

Please contact Beverly McClure at the Conference Office for an application packet. You can reach her at 610-826-3113 or [email protected]. Or simply go to www.pnec.org to obtain the application packet.

Please note: your application will not be processed until all three application materials are received in the PNEC office.

Lay Ministry in the 21st Century

Press Release

New Program Director Announced

Lay Ministry in the 21st Century is pleased to announce that the Rev. Steven C. Hummel will become its new Program Director on October 1. Steve will be replacing the Rev. Sally Dries, who is retiring. Steve is a graduate of the LM21C program, having served as a licensed pastor before attending Lancaster Theological Seminary and being ordained. He holds standing in the Penn Northeast Conference, where he currently serves as pastor of Trinity UCC, Coplay, and as a member of the Licensed/Commissioned Member in Discernment Committee. He was also recently appointed as a member of the LM21C Steering Committee itself.

Steve has a background in business, having owned and operated two Subway franchises and served as executive director of a large paratransit system. He has also worked as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic, in which capacity he assisted in the training of physicians in emergency response.

Steve has a passion for lay ministry. This is clear not only in his personal journey, but in his training and empowerment of the members of his current congregation. His references noted his excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, enthusiasm, and creativity, all of which will serve the program well. One reference wrote, "He will bring folks along while challenging their thinking and preconceptions that could hold back the necessary evolutions to grow Lay Ministry."

The LM21C Steering Committee looks forward to beginning its work with Steve as we continue to serve the needs of lay leaders within our three conferences.

BACK TO SCHOOL NEEDS -

CWS SCHOOL KIT MATCHING GRANT PROJECT

Church World Service Following domestic and international disasters the need to distribute specific material aid is often crucial to the recovery process.  UCC Disaster Ministries, Conferences and congregations support these efforts by pre-assembling various types of Church World Service kits that are stored and can be shipped at a moment's notice. UCC Disaster Ministries was recently notified that stock supplies of CWS School kits were very low due in part to the ongoing situation in Syria. In an effort to support UCC congregations in restocking these essential kits, UCC Disaster Ministries is offering matching grants totaling up to $50,000 for congregations assembling CWS School Kits. Grants will be awarded at $250/congregation on a first come first serve basis. Congregations are encouraged to engage their local community, businesses, friends and coworkers and to work collaboratively with other nearby congregations in an effort to pull resources and maximize purchasing power. To learn more, visit:ucc.org/disaster/cws-school-ki-matching-grant.html or contact: UCC Disaster Ministries at 216-736-3211 or [email protected]
