Letter from Laurie

Dear Friend,

On Saturday at 11AM, I invite you to join the march for justice in Staten Island led by Reverend Al Sharpton and the family of Eric Garner. We will walk from the intersection where he took his final breaths to the District Attorney's Office then host a rally a few blocks away. We will not go back!

The excessive use of police force is an issue that has become prevalent in recent weeks within the African-American community. It is heartbreaking to watch the images on the news that share an eerie resemblance to the Civil Rights Movement. Tensions have been high in the city of Ferguson, Missouri where college-bound Michael Brown, an 18-year-old unarmed Black teenager was shot and killed by Police Officer Darren Wilson on August 9th

Now is not the time to remain silent or to sit back and do nothing. Our action or inaction today will dictate the course of our nation's future and whether history will repeat itself. How many more mothers must grieve over the loss of their son? When will enough be enough?  Our youth, our parents should not have to live in fear of law enforcement authorities. We live in a civil society where the rights and lives of one another should be respected. Let us continue to work together to strengthen community and police relations to ensure that our youth have every opportunity to realize their fullest potential.

I hope that you will continue to engage with my office, exchanging ideas and solutions to improve our district, city, and state.

Yours in Partnership,

Laurie A. Cumbo

Legislative Update
  • Introduced a recognize the 50th anniversary of the Mississippi Summer Project, also known as Freedom Summer. In 1964, civil rights organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Legal Defense Fund recruited volunteers from New York City to support efforts in Mississippi to help African-Americans become full participants in the electoral process through voting or running for elected office. As a result of this project, more than 1,000 African-American voters were registered and 40 Freedom schools, or alternative free schools for African-American youth were established to cultivate political participation and activism in Mississippi. There were many who risked or lost their lives that summer. On the 50th anniversary of this endeavor, we honor the work and their memories.
