Your Community Natural Foods Grocer Since 1995.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago.
The second-best time is now.
-Chinese proverb

September is golden with opportunity. It's Organic Harvest Month and Back to School season, providing us with plenty of reasons to bring fresh, local and chemical-free produce into our daily food routines. With so many activities to juggle, families can depend on Harvest Market to supply your household with the highest quality, sustainably grown foods every day.

How can you encourage your children to be engaged in the food they eat? We asked that question to our staff, parents themselves, and here's what they said:

"Because you can never fully control your child's lunch, focus on breakfast and family time around the table at home."  -Kyara

"Make eating a family affair. Have everyone grab their favorite Harvest Market Kitchen item and have an impromptu picnic."  -Megan

"Involve your children in the preparation of their meal and they are more likely to eat it. You can't start too young with kitchen skills." -Henry

Local Farm Profile
North Star Orchard
Cochranville, PA

North Star Orchard is located in Southeastern Pennsylvania and specializes in growing unique and heritage varieties of tree fruits and a wide variety of vegetables. Fruit selections include several hundred varieties of apples and dozens of varieties of peaches, nectarines, plums, pears, and Asian pears. This year, Harvest Market is thrilled to offer North Star's Fruit Explorer CSA Share for pick up in the store on Wednesdays from 2-7pm. The Harvest Market Kitchen is also using some of North Star's fruit in their Fresh Fruit Cobblers.

North Star Orchard was started in Chester County, PA in 1992 by Ike and Lisa Kerschner on a 4-acre piece of leased property in Newlin Township. In 1996, seeing a need to expand plantings, they arranged to plant another leased 6-acre property in Avondale. In 2006, they purchased a 10-acre parcel in Cochranville, on which they started growing vegetables in 2007 and planted a new orchard in 2008. In 2011, Ike and Lisa purchased the adjoining 10 acres in Cochranville, on which the newest orchard was planted in the spring of 2012.

Ike and Lisa have always been interested in both growing unusual varieties of fruit and vegetables and in using the newest ideas in training and trellising. They are concerned about the environment, are GMO free, and work hard to farm in a manner as sustainable and safe as possible. Click here to learn more about the farm's history, the farm family, and their farming philosophy. Or, if you enjoy listening to podcasts, listen about their fruit geekdom on Jack's Farm Radio.

North Star sells all of their products directly to consumers at area producer-only farmers' markets and through their CSA. The business is known for its abundance of apple varieties, unique Asian pears, and the high standard of quality in all fruits and vegetables. In 2012, the Kerschners celebrated their 20th anniversary of the farm by planting a new and very unique orchard. The farm's current large selection of apple varieties has been joined by hundreds more (they're up to around 400 now). The goal? To flavor the future! Check out their calendar for Adventures in Flavor! events and explore some of the 400 varieties yourself.

Even though the North Star Fruit Explorer CSA has already started for the season, you can still purchase a prorated "Late Start Membership" for the remainder of the season.
Please contact North Star Orchard directly to become a Fruit Explorer. With your share, you will receive a diverse selection of fruit, including new and heritage varieties of apples, peaches, plums, nectarines, pears, Asian pears, and grapes.

Take Action: Protect Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are in trouble. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists nearly 40 species of pollinators as threatened or endangered. Please contact your Member of Congress today and ask them to sign on to a letter by Reps. Back to School Vaccines: Know the Risk and Failures

Unlike children in Canada and the European Union, American children must get dozens of doses of vaccines or they can't get a public school education. With so many pediatricians denying vaccine risks and failures, it is even more important for parents to do their own research. If your child is getting back-to-school shots, you should know how to identify symptoms of a vaccine reaction. If you  choose to vaccinate, ask these 8 questions to your health care provider. For more information, visit the National Vaccine Information Center online.
