MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR KAREN FILLMORE

BUILDING HOPE IN OUR COMMUNITIES
AND AROUND THE WORLD

Happy 2nd Quarter of our Lions Year. Thank you everyone for using the tool of "Just ASK" and embracing our International Presidents goal of "Strengthening Our Pride".

ASK 1
It has been exciting visiting your clubs, installing lots of new members, hearing about your club projects and renewing friendships. Building two new clubs with our LCI extension specialist Ronnie Martin has been an exciting learning experience for those involved. Although we are still working on those two clubs, what an opportunity to go into a community and share what we love about being a Lion. As your District Governor, I am proud of our District 4-C6. We now have 78 new Lions this year and with the addition of the Gonzales Lions and building the Los Altos Lions club, I know our numbers will be jumping significantly. Are you growing your club? Are you involved in some exciting service and fundraising projects? If not, please remember to reach out to our District Leaders, your Region and Zone Chairs, and look at information on our LCI web site. Remember to "Just Ask" someone to join you on a project so they can see what we do for themselves.

DISTRICT PROJECTS
Our Region and Zone Chairs are helping to pass on information to improve Communication in our District. The Holidays are approaching rapidly as we are finishing up the Governor visitations over the next two months. Some of the District projects we have recently concluded are the following: The Anti Bullying program in downtown San Jose where we were interviewed about what "Peace means to me" which was televised; Canine Companions "Walk n Roll" in Cupertino also did an interview with us about how we partner with this wonderful program; Walk for Hope was held on the Guadalupe River Park trail; The Monterey Lighthouse Lions BBQ had the best attendance of Lions in years; The Leo/parent Leadership Forum was a huge success with some parents attending for the first time; a District environmental park Leo/Lion clean up day; the Day on the Bay used our AJ health screening unit with lots of contacts with the community and with other agencies present, who learned more about who the LIONS are. Utilizing membership brochures and always carrying an application is something you might want to consider.

Our PediaVison cameras (4) have arrived. What a gift to help someone discover their need for improved vision or to help a parent who had no idea their child had severe vision issues.

Remember to post your project dates on our District web site calendar. This will help avoid a conflict with another club or District activity already scheduled. Keep up the great PR in your community and with your club projects as there are always opportunities to enlighten someone about how Lions are making a difference.

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at our next Cabinet Meeting in Del Rey Oaks. There will be an excellent guest speaker, some wonderful training, and a chance to meet some new Lions in our District.

MESSAGE FROM FIRST VDG JAN MILLER

I just came back from a great Council of Governors meeting in Fairfield and had my first District Governor-elect Training. A lot of classes are starting at the Council with a lot of online classes from LCI. This was one of the best Councils with Governor Buck Larson hosting, from 4-C2. He included Duck races with the First Vice District Governors and a pie-eating contest with the Governors. According to Governor Buck, 4-C6 had the best dressed duck in the race! I think Governor Karen was covered up the best with towels and swimming goggles to keep the apple pie off of her! It was a lot of fun!!!!

We have our first Multiple Leadership training going on in Sacramento on the 8th of this month. We have 22 Lions going to this and we needed at least 30 to 35 Lions attending! Not one Lion from 4-C6 is attending! Think about sending your First Vice President to this next year! It's the best training that a Lion could possibly get for their Leadership. Even someone who is a Zone or Region Chair would benefit from this! If you are interested in going to Ontario, January 17th to the 19th for the Leadership Class down south, please let PDG Chris Morris know right away!

We have our MD-4 Convention in February. It will be the 20th to 22nd in Visalia. Go to the MD-4 website and download a registration form and mail it in! All overdue MD-4 invoices need to be paid now to vote in February at MD-4 Convention. We have 9 clubs that need to pay and get their club dues up to date. Please see me during the cabinet meeting if you think your club is overdue! Don't forget to bring pull tabs so I can count them and enter your club in the contest!

Also, remember to give to City of Hope Family Center! They need our help and the check needs to be made out to the "Family Center of City of Hope"!

LIONS EYES ACROSS CALIFORNIA
Lions Eyes Across California We will be collecting eyeglasses on this date, statewide! This will be the first time all districts in California will work towards one project together! Date for participation is March 28th, 2015. First Vice District Governor Jan will be your contact person. Locate a walk up or drive thru for public access. Have tables set up with Centennial information, plus a membership information table. Encourage local business, news and radio to advertise for you. You can also partner with other service groups to get the people in. If you pay for any advertising, please give receipts to First Vice District Governor Jan Miller within a week! Thank you for taking part in this!

MESSAGE FROM SECOND VDG BARBARA CHAMBERLAIN

Retention is an important project for our district. What keeps members attending our meetings? If you know why some of your members have dropped, let Barbara Chamberlain know.  One suggestion is to find out if clubs purchase badges locally.  Very often the badges take a long time to arrive. Does your club buy badges locally? What store or business? How much do they cost? Let Barbara know if you do buy your badges from a local store.

DISTRICT NEWS

AJ ROBINSON FOUNDATION
by Rick Silveria, President
AJ Robinson Foundation

The AJ Foundation has been busy this season with a number of screening events. Some of these are new events and some are established event that happen every year. It is encouraging to see the number of screenings taking place. This September and October practically every weekend of these two months a Lions club had the AJ in use. At a number of these screening a spot camera was borrowed and used giving our District an opportunity to get familiar with the device before we got our own delivered.

Although it has been a long time coming, the great news is we have received our cameras and will have them in service very shortly. I want to thank PDG Bob Ferber for the amount of time and effort he put into securing the grant and the cameras. This will open up the doors for clubs in our District to do more school screenings. I would also like to thank the clubs that contributed to purchase of the Vision Screeners, without these contributions none of this would be possible.  During the next few months we will have some training sessions for clubs who are interested in learning the Vision Screeners operation. Dates will be posted on the District website shortly.

In addition, the foundation is working to make the AJ Robinson screening unit a safe and easy vehicle to use at events. We have added fire extinguishers to the truck and trailer. We will be installing a backup camera to the truck and trailer to aid in the safe positioning of the unit and we will be making some modifications to the trailer to better accommodate the use of the vision screeners.  As always, we are looking for Lions who are interested in being trained in driving the AJ unit.
VISION CAMERA UPDATE
by PDG Bob Ferber, Project Coordinator

IPDG Bob FerberI am pleased to announce that the four Vision "Spot" Cameras have finally arrived. After receiving the matching grant funds from Lions Clubs International Foundation, the cameras were ordered from Welch Allyn, the company who purchased Pediavision. They honored the original quoted price for the cameras. After doing research, I was able to purchase the recommended printer locally, and to also obtain a discount on the sales price (best price quoted) by speaking with the store manager. The equipment and cases have been marked and engraved for protection.

The first training on the use of the camera included the A J Board and some Lions club members on Tuesday, October 28th. If you want to view the new training video go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2TfRnfNfWE . The Video does a good job of instructing the use of the camera. The first part is mostly "sales" PR.
The Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener
The AJ Robinson Foundation will be managing the use of the Vision "Spot" Cameras. If you visit
the District Web page at www.lions-4c6.org and click on the AJ Robinson Screening Unit,
you can get the contract and other info. Further information and scheduling of the cameras can be obtained from Past Zone Chair Shay Adams, at [email protected]

The scheduling of the cameras means that the mobile screening van does not need to utilized IF only doing a vision screening. The charge is reduced for the use of the cameras.  Thanks to all who participated in the fund-raising efforts!

It is not too late to make a donation to the AJ Robinson Foundation for on-going expenses such as printer cartridge ink, paper, and maintenance.
CENTENNIAL TIME
by Lion PCS Rick Silveria
Centennial

A year ago was the District's 50th Anniversary and many of the clubs submitted histories of their club to be included in the electronic history book of our District. Once again, I am asking clubs to submit their history this time for the 100th Anniversary of Lions. This will also give clubs the opportunity who did not make it into the District's 50th book a chance to get their story included this time around. It will also give the clubs that submitted information a chance to update their history. An example of this is the merger of San Jose Host and San Jose East Valley.

I am also looking for information and pictures on clubs that no longer exist. A couple that come to mind are The King of Clubs and Cambrian Park. Watsonville Host was another club that had a long History and should be included in this new publication. It would be a shame to lose this information and not preserve it for the coming years.

I know that some documents the club do not want to part with documents, and that is fine. If the document can be scanned, that is even better for this project.

Please submit the information to me at:

Willow Glen Blood Drive
By Lion Lucy Asfour

Stanford Blood Mobile

The Willow Glen Blood Drive was a huge success! 42 donors came through the door; we had 30 full blood donors  and 3 double red cell donors.  Since each whole blood donation is separated into four different components, the 30 whole blood units will impact the lives of approximately 120 patients, and the three double red cell units, will impact the lives of six patients.  We are very encouraged with the success of our first blood drive and look forward to repeating it early next year!

Scales of Justice Lions Warm Coat Drive

by Lion Linda Pugliese, President

While the need for warm coats has never been greater, it has also never been easier to meet this vital need in our community. Scales of Justice Lions is inviting Lions and area residents to join them in an effort to ensure that no one goes without a warm coat this winter.

Scales of Justice Lions is holding a One Warm Coat drive and will be collecting clean, gently used warm coats for distribution -- free of charge and without discrimination -- directly to local children and adults in the local area. The coat drive program provides an easy way for individuals and families to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors by simply passing along coats and jackets that are no longer needed.

Scales of Justice Lions invites you to bring your clean, gently used coats and jackets to the cabinet meeting November 8th. We will also have a collection barrel located in the lobby of 111 N. Market St., San Jose, from November 7 to November 28 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The process is simple: you drop off your extra coat and Scales of Justice Lions takes care of the rest. All donated coats will be given to a local agency for distribution to local people in need.

EVENTS

STOP HUNGER NOW

November 15th, 2014 10:00 am
St. Francis Episcopal Church
1205 Pine Avenue
San Jose, CA 95125

We need 10 clubs to pledge $250.00 to make this event happen. Please RSVP if your club will support this community project, to help feed those in need. Last year all the food packaged went to the Philippines. The food is given to stricken areas in need of this life saving gift. I will also be asking for people to come to this food packaging event and help put together the bags of dehydrated food. So there are other ways to help support Stop Hunger Now, other than just monetarily.

Thank you for your consideration and please let me know if we can count on your club for financial and physical support. This would qualify under the Relieving the Hunger campaign for the LCI Centennial Service Challenge.

City of Hope

Family Center at City of Hope

Lions have taken on a project that helps address the needs of patients and their loved ones who frequently take on the role of caregiver - the upgrading and renovation of the Family Center at City of Hope. Located in the tranquil and verdant setting of Hope Village, on-campus housing for patients requiring long-term treatment at City of Hope, the Family Center offers a wide array of amenities, including:
  • A modern kitchen with updated appliances and full dishware, utensils, etc.
  • A lounge with flat-screen tvs, Wii, Playstations, etc.
  • Full bathrooms with shower
  • A computer room, open 7 days a week, with free computer and internet access
  • A laundry room with four washers and dryers, for use free of charge
  • A multi-purpose space where musicians, comedians and other entertainers who visit the
hospital can perform, which also serves as a meeting place for patient support groups and
    classes such as yoga
This project would not have been possible without the generosity and hard work of MD4 Districts such as 4-L5 who have helped raise over $72,000, 4-A3 who have helped raise over $62,000, 4-L1 who have helped raise over $43,000 and many more. The list of supporters is endless and we are forever grateful. This multi-year, $1 million project is modernizing and upgrading this vital facility to create a lasting legacy for patients and families whose loved ones are being treated at City of Hope. As we enter this final year of our campaign for the Lions Family Center, we introduce a new way of giving with the launch of our very own Family Center Crowdrise webpage. To support this project, please visit https://www.crowdrise.com/LCIFCCityofHope.
