CFCUProud of Our Credit Union - 5-Star Rated Construction Federal Credit Union Earns Prestigious Award

Construction Federal Credit Union, Bingham Farms, is proud to be recognized as one of the strongest credit unions in the nation by BAUERFINANCIAL, Coral Gables, FL, the nation's leading bank and credit union rating and research firm. BAUERFINANCIAL has been analyzing and rating the nation's financial institutions since 1983 and Construction Federal Credit Union has once again earned its highest rating of 5-Stars. The latest rating is based on June 30, 2013 financial data and indicates that Construction Federal Credit Union significantly exceeds all federal capital requirements and maintains a low level of delinquent loans, among other benchmarks.

Karen L. Dorway, president of the research firm, had this to say: "A recent Gallup poll indicates that consumer confidence in financial institutions is beginning to come back. That confidence, no doubt, can be attributed to institutions like Construction Federal Credit Union, which hold to the principles of sound banking. These are the shining stars of the industry. Under the direction of James M. Finn, President and CEO, Construction Federal Credit Union has been able to thrive in a depressed economy without compromising its standards, and that's commendable."

Having continuously earned a 5-Star rating for so long puts Construction Federal Credit Union in an even more elite category of "Exceptional Performance Credit Unions." Only institutions that have earned Bauer's top rating for ten years (or longer) can claim this distinction.

Construction Federal Credit Union was established in 1974 and has been committed to providing the best of banking to its members ever since. Currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, Construction Federal Credit Union has 21 conveniently located offices in addition to its main office on Telegraph Road in Bingham Farms. Construction Federal Credit Union is a member of the NCUA and an Equal Housing Lender.

AIAkingAIA Michigan Announces Dennis King as New Public Policy Director

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Michigan has announced that Dennis King, FAIA, FESD, LEED AP, Principal of DMKING Consulting, LLC, will fill the role of Public Policy Director as a consultant to the organization. The Public Policy Director position was created to focus on public awareness, government affairs and fund development.

King is no stranger to AIA Michigan, having served in every executive chair position at both AIA Michigan and AIA Detroit during his decades of volunteering with the organizations. In addition to being President of AIA Detroit in 1984 and President of AIA Michigan in 2007, King has also received the Gold Medal award, the highest honor of a chapter or component, from both AIA Detroit and AIA Michigan and was elevated to AIA Fellowship in 1992. He also serves on the Michigan Architectural Foundation's Board of Trustees.

King noted, "I am tremendously pleased that I have been selected to continue my career-long involvement with AIA Michigan by serving the organization and its membership as the new Public Policy Director.  The effort to meld and support public awareness, government affairs and fund development is a really great idea and an important effort that I embrace wholeheartedly.  This is a big responsibility, so I look forward to engaging cooperatively with my colleagues across the State to help heighten the visibility of our profession in the months and years ahead."

In addition to his service to the AIA and the architectural community at large, King brings an impressive professional portfolio to the table. His prominent career at Harley Ellis Devereaux began in 1979 and spanned 34 years including leadership of both project management and business development, ultimately serving as Chairman and CEO of the organization from 1991 through 2010. During his tenure, the firm grew from its historic single office in Detroit to its current national design firm recognition with five locations across three States. He led the company to AIA Michigan Firm of the Year honors in 2000, and was also elected a member of the Engineering Society of Detroit's College of Fellows.

Today, through DMKING Consulting LLC, Dennis offers his savvy business knowledge and experience to established companies, growing organizations, and entrepreneurs interested in improving their bottom line performance through client focus and staff engagement.

The American Institute of Architects Michigan, headquartered in the historic Beaubien House across from the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, is dedicated to bringing public attention the value and importance of architectural excellence and to recognize those whose notable achievements encourage all to make excellence in architecture the standard.

Construction Activity Index

Provided by Don Wilson, CAM Consulting Economist

Research work by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), shows their Architectural Billings Index, a measure of design work on architect's boards, is a leading indicator of non-residential construction spending. This is because surveys by AIA and research by McGraw-Hill shows about 75 percent of non-residential buildings are designed by architects and an even greater share of such plans are reviewed and approved by architects. Other research by AIA shows that architects' billings highly correlate with eventual non-residential construction spending with lead times up to one year. AIA also measures billings on a regional basis, one being the Mid-west region of the nation, including Michigan, but there is no similar measure of architectural billings within a state that can be compared with non-residential building expenditures within a state. However, there is an approximation of potential demand for the services and resources of non-residential building contractors and their sub-contractors for Michigan. These are the requests for bids published by CAM'S News Department whose number (advanced from three months earlier) is compared in the accompanying chart with the value of non-residential building contract awards authorized for start of work in across the state and southeastern Michigan.

halloweenA Halloween History... Before You Go A-Haunting

Back in the old days, or once upon a time, in the tradition of fairy tales, there were the Celtic people and their Druid priests. The Druids were believed to have the ability, among other skills, to commune with the dead. Their powers, it was rumored, were much more powerful on the day of Samhain (pronounced sow-en), which was the last day of the year in the Celtic calendar. But, before believing that the Halloween celebration came directly from Samhain, a day mistakenly attributed directly to the Wiccans rather than to the Celts, you must understand that it is a blend of Hallowmas, a celebration of Catholic origins, as well as the Roman festival called Feralia.

On the day of Samhain, the Celtic people would all extinguish their home's hearth fire. They would gather in front of a blessed bonfire and would sing, dance and listen to the stories that were told during the celebration. At the end of the evening, each person would take some of the bonfire home to relight their heart fire in hopes of ensuring good fortune to their home and family for the coming year. It is said that if your hearth fire would not light from the sacred bonfire, misfortune, even death, would befall someone in the house that very year.

By the 19th century, most of the religious aspects of the Halloween celebration had dwindled away and it was mostly a secular holiday, a gathering of community with only some of the remnants of the past clinging to it like the cobwebs of a haunted house. People would still dress up in costume, but less for the original reason of confusing the dead and more for just plain entertainment and fun.

Enjoy a safe and happy Halloween!
