Tomatoes are considered among the most popular items at farmers' markets, yet for markets starting before July, there is always a waiting period.  We are glad to report that we now have both cherry and full sized tomatoes available, with exotic heirlooms to follow.  By next week we expect to have corn.

Thank you to Mimi Hall, of the Boston Public Market staff for alerting us to the collection of '40 maps that explain food in America' collected by Vox, who reports that we live in
a time "where food insecurity coexists with an obesity crisis, where fast food is everywhere and farmer's markets are
spreading, where foodies have never had more power and McDonald's has never had more locations..."
You will find these maps, charts and graphs fascinating.

Last Wednesday, the forecast was for intermittent downpours throughout the afternoon.  The forecasters called it correctly
this time and our decision to move indoors turned out out well.  Our thanks to the great number of shoppers who didn't let the precipitation get in the way of supporting the vendors.
We were a little snug, but it made it fun for the vendors to
mingle with each other.  Andrew of OMG! Bagels and Joan of
Joni's Cannolis took a moment to kick back towards the end
of the day, while Josh from Brigham Farm celebrated his
21st birthday with Dave from Coastal Vineyards.

Jane from West River Creamery and Sandy from Vermont Gourmet Candy Dish had to cancel at the last minute two weeks ago
when an intense storm came through Vermont the night before, resulting in downed trees and the loss of power and internet.  They will be back Wednesday with cheese, maple syrup, bacon, relish, jelly and dessert sauce.

Jose' Malary returns with DOOS P.K., "The Caviar of Vegan Treats". He has partnered at farmers' markets with the Lemanis family, who live in Sandwich, MA and have a family olive grove in Kalamata, Greece, where they produce Monopati Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  "I use the Monopati EVOO oil regularly in my cooking,
so that is why I am proud to carry the Monopati brand alongside my spicy nutritious creation of DOOS P.K.," says Jose'.

Paino Organics from Concord makes salsa, tortilla strips and their recent introduction, the Swoffle.  "Swoffles are delicious waffle cookies inspired by the traditional Dutch treat, the stroopwafel.

Each waffle is made from organic gluten free flour with a

layer of creamy caramel in the center. We don't use ingredients that contain wheat, corn, nuts or soy in our products."

Violette Gluten-Free Bakery creates delicious food, both savory and sweet for those who require, or just enjoy, the gluten-free option.  Since their first visit to the Wayland Winter Market two seasons ago, they have had a loyal following here. Recently,

their landlord more than doubled their rent and they

will have to move early this fall.  If you are interested in supporting their future, as they hope to build a new kitchen,

they are running an indiegogo campaign for the next 38 days.

Do you have a question about how to cook any of the seafood on the list in this picture?  Julie Manning of C & C Lobsters and Fish can advise you about preparation.

Last week we bought bluefish and were really happy with
the easy and delicious recipe from Epicurious, Broiled Bluefish
with Tomatoes and Herbs.  Order your bluefish in advance:
[email protected] and pick up most of the rest
of your ingredients at the market.

Soluna Garden Farm will be sampling their Summer Sunshine tea, made with lemon balm, honeybush tea, lemon thyme and tarragon.  Summer Sunshine makes a great, caffeine free iced tea.

In addition to the 22 (that is not a typo) farmers' markets that they participate in, Soluna has a retail store in Winchester called Soluna Tea, Herb and Spice Emporium.  Some of the items that they sell in the store are not made by them, so they don't bring them to farmers' markets.  However, you can order them online and they will deliver them for free at the market.  Choose 'free local delivery to farmers market' as your shipping method.

The fourteen flavored sugars caught our eye.

See their complete line of products on their website.

Chatting with knife sharpener, Patti Small at the market, we
asked her how to choose the best type of cutting board for preserving the sharpness of our knives.
How long will your knives stay sharp?  Her answer was very clear:
 Glass - one week
Plastic - one month
Wood - six months
As far as food safety and cutting boards go, there are many opinions about what is best.  This concise breakdown from the Huffington Post, "Cutting Boards Cooks Should Avoid" will help you decide which is best for the ingredient you are cutting.

Town Farm Gardens has been busy keeping up with orders from stores and sales at farmers' markets.  Laurie wants shoppers to know that she will have her Dill Pickles, Apple Pie Jam and Carrot Cake Jam back in stock this week.  Also, she is teaming up with Great Harvest Bread for a Special: buy a loaf of bread and Cheryl will give you a coupon for $1 off any purchase.  One coupon per person.  A slice of Apple Pie Bread covered with Apple Pie Jam sounds doubly good.

My Montessori, opening in Sudbury this September, will join us
again this week with crafts, reading and play/building materials for children and information for parents from noon to 3 PM.

Did you know that the Wayland Stop & Shop has complimentary electric car charging stations, rooftop solar panels to supply about 11% of the store's energy needs and LED parking lights?

They also have a great selection of BIG sandwiches for you to enjoy at the Market, or to eat the second half of at a later time!
