Community Donations
Gulf Coast Woman's Club
The Gulf Coast Woman's Club Art Community Service Program donated $200 to help fund the summer reading program at the Bay County Public Library. Club members Mokey McCormick and Marsha Rockhill were at the library on June 9th to present the check to Youth Services Librarian Sandra Pierce.

Northwest Florida Music Teachers Association
The Northwest Florida Music Teachers Association presented the Bay County Public Library Youth Services Department with a check for $1,267 to be used for musical programs in the library. NFMTA President Emily Breeze presented the check to Youth Services Librarian Sandra Pierce.

Library Offers Teen Producers Program
The Bay County Public Library is offering their next Teen Producers program the week of July 28th from 1:30 to 4 PM daily. Teens must be able to attend all five classes. Space is limited, and teens must register in advance.  Thanks to a grant from the Best Buy Foundation in the amount of $5,000, with an additional $1,600 provided by the Friends of the Bay County Public Libraries, the library was able to purchase a camcorder, a chroma green screen for special effects, lighting, and computer equipment and software. The Teen Producers program provides teens with the instruction, equipment, and mentorship needed to create short video productions. Teens learn about the fundamentals of digital video production including writing, composition, lighting, video editing, and using special effects. Teens who complete the program continue to have access to the equipment so that they can build on what they have learned while producing videos for school and entertainment. "The goal of this project is to help teens improve their technology skills so they can excel in school, compete for high paying jobs, and thrive in the 21st century," said Robin Shader, Library Director. Nancy Brockman Back at Port St. Joe Library
 Nancy Brockman, a former library assistant at the Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library in Port St. Joe, is back! The current branch manager, Carl Copeland, is retiring after twelve years with the library. As the new Gulf County Coordinator, Nancy will manage the Port St. Joe library and will oversee operations at the Charles Whitehead Public Library in Wewahitchka. Nancy plans to help both Gulf County branches of the Northwest Regional Library System by continuing to provide needed services and information to the communities. Nancy received her Master's in Library and Information Science from Florida State University in 2012. It was during her time as a paraprofessional at the Port St. Joe Middle/High School Media Center that she decided she wanted to be a librarian. So after 30 years of being out of school, she went back and finished her Associate's Degree, and then went on to get her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. She is very fortunate that she had the unfailing support of her husband and children during this endeavor. Nancy has been working as a reference librarian at the Bay County Public Library since 2013, but always hoped to return to the library in Port St. Joe. "Finding my way back to the Costin Gibson library in Port St. Joe is a long anticipated goal," she said. "The path led me to an opportunity with the Bay County Public Library, which allowed me to develop a much greater understanding of how the library system operates, and about the wonderful people that work there. I will miss being at the Bay County Public Library, but I look forward to the challenges ahead, and I'm thrilled to be going back to Gulf County." Nancy will start her new position in early July, so be sure to stop by and see her at the library! |
Good Times at the Tupelo Honey Festival with the Library
The Charles Whitehead Public Library in Wewahitchka set up a booth at the recent Tupelo Festival to let people know about the youth programs offered by the library this summer. To get children excited about the summer programs, the library set up a bean bag toss and allowed children to pick a duck out of a pond! The Fizz, Boom, Read summer reading programs will be Tuesdays through July 8 at 3 PM. The library also offers Wee Read storytime for preschoolers Mondays at 10 AM. At the festival, award-winning author Rysa Walker had a book signing and raffle, with proceeds supporting the library's youth programs. Rysa (which is her pen name) grew up on a cattle ranch near Wewa. She is now writing the CHRONOS Files series of young adult books. The library is grateful for the support Rysa has provided to our programs. At the library booth, there was an article on display about Beverly Mount-Douds and her upcoming book about Wewahitchka. Beverly meets with people in the library on the first and third Mondays of each month from 1 to 5 PM to collect information for her new book. If you would like to be interviewed by Beverly, bring your stories and photos of Historic Wewahitchka to the library during those times. Computer Classes at the Bay County Public Library
Connect U Evening Class: Word-- The Basics
Tuesday, July 29 from 6 PM to 7:30 PM
Learn to navigate Microsoft Word 2007, some text basics, and how to open and save documents. Prerequisite: Computer Basics or equivalent experience. The Northwest Regional Library System offers free workshops for beginning computer users in the Bay County Public Library computer lab. Instruction is hands-on and is designed to be progressive. Registration is not required. Workshops start on time, so be early and don't miss anything!
Not all classes are offered every month. A new schedule is published on the 15th of the current month for the following month on our Events Calendar.

Yes! You did everything right! As you know, Zinio is our newest resource that provides cover-to-cover digital access to over 75 different magazines.
You need to create two log-in accounts to take full advantage of Zinio. The first account gets you into the Northwest Regional Library System collection of Zinio magazines. The second account allows you to create your personal library of magazines for streaming or downloaded/offline reading. You can check out as much as you want and keep the magazines in your personal reading list for as long as you want - no return required! View the magazines on your PC/Mac or download for offline viewing with handy mobile apps. How cool is that?!

Adult Crafts at the BCPL
As part of the Bay County Public Library Adult Summer Reading Program, drop by the library and check out our "Take and Make" and "Make and Take" crafts!  In our display case, we have examples of great crafts you can make out of books. Ask at the Information desk for instructions on how to make your own! Near the Information desk, we will have rotating "Make and Take" crafts throughout the summer. We also have a display board for you to answer the question: what are the characteristics of a good book? We're creating our own "periodic table of literary elements" with your help!
