Sage In-District Services
Every year child study teams and districts identify students whose needs are beyond what the structure of the traditional school and child study team can meet. Child study team professionals understand what these discouraged students need but also recognize that they lack the time and resources necessary for the most effective intervention. Sage In-District Services is designed to fill the gap in service between traditional in-school support and an out-of-district placement. Our skilled clinical team will work with the child study team, academic staff and administration to provide a seamless counseling experience for the student. With the right therapeutic relationship and counseling, students will gain the support, strategy and insight they need in order to make progress in school. Sage In- District Services brings both the educational and counseling expertise that are the essential components of successful school-based intervention. From the last week of June through the month of July, Sage Day Lower & Middle School held yet another successful extended school year program. Students received reinforcement work and enrichment instruction in reading, writing, and math, while also utilizing group and individual therapeutic services. Students also received ample opportunities to socialize and build new friendships while strengthening old ones. In addition, throughout the summer, students participated in fun activities like Fitness Friday and our popular end of summer celebration.

With the summer now ending, students and staff are preparing diligently to kick off the new school year. The first day of school for students was September 3rd, and everyone was excited to greet the new students and welcome back those returning from last year. On Wednesday evening, September 17th, Sage Day Lower & Middle School will welcome parents and guardians into the building to meet teachers and therapists and learn all about our academic program. The first field trip for students will be on Friday, September 19th, when the entire school goes to Camp Vacamas in West Milford. At Vacamas, students will participate in a series of team-building activities that will help build lasting bonds to carry us throughout the school year.

The new school year also starts with some new additions to the Sage Day Lower & Middle School community. Mrs. Emily Lohman-Spear and Mr. Will Mazzuto have joined our therapy staff, and Ms. Stefanie Vukasovic and Mrs. Judy Ruel have joined our educational staff. We look forward to the great contributions that these professionals have to offer to us.

Everyone at Sage Day Lower & Middle School is eagerly anticipating returning to school and we all expect the 2014-2015 school year to be both safe and successful.

Most of us are wondering, how the 3 months of summer flew by so quickly and how can it be September already! The transition from summer vacation mode back to the classroom is daunting and can often be filled with anxiety, with students and parents dreading the return of schedules and stress. However, here at Sage Day, we have been busy planning, scheduling, coordinating, juggling and sorting and will be

implementing strategies to help ease our students into the school routine. The first week of school, we will be building a rapport with our students. Staff will be establishing rules and expectations and teachers will be motivating our students to get ready to learn. All this is the foundation for building a strong school community.

Mr. Stephen Midouhas, one of our staff clinicians, will be leaving our Rochelle Park campus to move into a clinical position in our Sage In-District program in Glen Rock. We wish him the best of luck in his new role. We are excited to welcome Mr. David Strauss, who will be joining our clinical team.

We are thrilled to add a new course to our curriculum - World Mythology, which will be offered during our 2nd Semester. In this course, students will explore connections between the stories of various cultures and historical periods and examine the similarities and differences in the answers they offer to life's essential questions.

Our College & Career Transition Coordinator, Mr. Montesano, will be meeting with our seniors this month to begin the college and trade school application process. He will also set into motion our Community Based Experience Program for internships where our seniors go out into the community to gain valuable experience at various worksites. We are looking forward to firming up dates this fall for college admissions representatives to come to Rochelle Park to address our juniors and seniors.

We are all very excited as we begin this new school year with new activities and new faces, as we continue to strengthen our existing relationships.

We are happy to announce Dr. Mary Rose Scalo has assumed the position of principal at Sage Day Boonton.

Our building has a new look this fall thanks to the renovations accomplished over the summer. The school is freshly painted and remodeled to create a warm, welcoming environment while making maximum use of instructional space.

We are looking forward to Parent Night which is scheduled for September 18th from 7 to 9 pm. This event offers an excellent opportunity for our parents to meet the Sage Day Boonton staff and learn more about our programs, policies, and procedures. We are currently surveying the students for elective/club preferences in order to offer options that are motivating and best suited to our students' needs and interests. In addition, staff will be reaching out to students this month for involvement in Student Council, Activities Committee, and Gay Straight Alliance.

Christine Ferro will be notifying parents/guardians this month for Parent Support Group involvement. If you are interested in information regarding college and career and other transition services please contact our transition coordinator Daniel Montesano via email at [email protected].
