Congressman Garcia Introduces I-STEM Network Legislation

Last week, Rep. Joe Garcia (D-FL) introduced the Innovative STEM Networks Act, a bill that will provide competitive grant opportunities to states that form network-based partnerships between schools, universities, business, and community groups to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.  The STEM Education Coalition and its members had the opportunity to work closely with Garcia and his staff as this bill was developed over the last several weeks.

Efforts to Inspire Students Have Borne Little Fruit
New York Times
Five years ago, President Obama began the Educate to Innovate initiative, a series of private-public partnerships with companies and nonprofits that was intended to get more students fascinated by science, technology, engineering and math - the so-called STEM fields...But that goal has been an elusive one.

The Unfulfilled Promise Of Educational Technology
Forbes

Not only has technology entered nearly every area of our personal life, it's the rare industry that isn't computerized, networked, and advertised on Facebook. Except one: education. Outside of the occasional computer lab, basic webpage, or iPad in the classroom, schools have stubbornly resisted technological innovation.

White House Maker Faire Showcases Offbeat Innovations
Washington Post
Every now and then, the White House puts on an event that manages to combine the height of geekiness with a somewhat hipster feel. It's what happens when the band Ok Go shoots a video promising to actually make something for the event (though it didn't), and when the leader of the free world talks to Russell the Electric Giraffe. "Look at this!" Obama said, gazing at the 17-foot-high, 2,200-pound steel creature on wheeled legs, as its mouth opened and closed and its neck swayed side to side. "I like those ears."
The Next 20 Years Are Going To Make The Last 20 Look Like We Accomplished Nothing In Tech
Business Insider
The world is hitting its stride in technological advances, and futurists have been making wild-sounding bets on what we'll accomplish in the not-so-distant future. Futurist Ray Kurzweil, for example, believes that by 2040 artificial intelligence will be so good that humans will be fully immersed in virtual reality and that something called the Singularity, when technology becomes so advanced that it changes the human race irreversibly, will occur.

A Problem Like No Other: Science And Politics
NPR
The problem is that we appear to be stumbling in our attempts to deal with the supremely difficult collective choices science and technology continually shove in our faces. Since the operative phrase here is "collective choices" - decisions made through democratic processes - here are a few questions to consider.

Percentage of Bachelor's Degrees Conferred to Women, by Major (1970-2012)
Randal S. Olson
One oft-cited problem with Computer Science is its glaring gender disparity: In a given Computer Science class, men will outnumber women as much as 8 to 2 (20% women). This stands in stark contrast to most other college majors, which have women outnumbering men 3 to 2 on average (60% women). This observation made me wonder: Are other STEM majors suffering the same gender disparity?
