Building Stronger Community Together
240 Attend YMCA Groundbreaking

With the support of the community, the Exeter Area YMCA is one step closer to reality. On September 16, nearly 240 people, including government officials, local business leaders and loyal volunteers and supporters, came together to break ground and celebrate the YMCA.

Special guest, Governor Hassan, spoke about the opportunities that the new Y will offer Exeter and the surrounding communities, "The Y will be a place where families of similar ages or situations can make great connections, where seniors can find others with similar interests and discover they aren't so lonely. The Y will be a place where as people make connections they will strengthen each other."

Paralympic Medalist Victoria Arlen credits her success at the London 2012 games to the support and training she received from the Y. "The number of people who didn't believe in me could fill a room. My supporters could fit in a closet - one of my best supporters was the Y. I found a community there that didn't see my chair as a thing that would hold me back, but as something that would propel me to do something great." She continued, "At the YMCA, no one is turned away based on a disability, the inability to pay or for just being different. We are all a part of a community. I love Exeter ... but to have a Y here, we can all get stronger together."

The Exeter Area YMCA will make it possible to expand community programs and services beyond YMCA Camp Lincoln and 16 state-licensed YMCA before-and-after school programs.

The new 33,000 square-foot facility - designed by Jewett Construction, Inc. - will feature a lobby/welcome lounge, multi-purpose community room, child watch rooms, youth/teen space, locker rooms, gymnasium, indoor track, wellness center (cardio/weights), and group fitness studios.

The facility is expected to open mid-2015.

$25,000 Gift to Exeter Area YMCA
National Diabetes Research Foundation Hopes to Raise Awareness

Southern District YMCA is humbled to announce a $25,000 gift from the National Diabetes Research Foundation (NDRF). This generous donation, in honor of the late Heather Clark, longtime Stratham resident and type-1 diabetic, will support the new 33,000 square-foot YMCA facility in Exeter, NH.

Alex Scott, Trustee/Founder of the NDRF and longtime family friend of Clark, believes the gift will raise awareness within the community so that people can learn to prevent and treat diabetes. "It's with great honor that the NDRF is able to make this donation in memory of Heather Clark. The new Southern District YMCA will be a place of the local community."

Gary Blake, volunteer Chair of the YMCA Capital Campaign accepted the gift with great appreciation, noting that, "This generous donation will be used to ensure that we have a facility where people will be encouraged to lead healthy lives in a supportive community environment."

Space available in some School Age Child Care programs

It's not too late to register your kids for School Age Child Care! Consider the YMCA School Age Child Care program, available in 16 local elementary schools (*programs full at some locations).

School Age Child Care nurtures the potential in every child by helping children succeed socially, emotionally and academically in developmentally appropriate ways. The SACC program focuses club programming on four core content areas: Art, Literacy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and Health and Wellness. In addition to club programming, children participate in 30+ minutes of physical activity per day, have an opportunity for free choice activities, and receive a healthy snack/breakfast.
