RAIL CONSTRUCTION ROLLING ON

Workers place concrete segments atop support columns to form the rail guideway.

It's been just about a year since HART resumed construction of Honolulu's rail system--- and the project has made significant progress.

T
oday there are more than 120 columns stretching from Kapolei through Ewa, and foundation work is underway in Waipahu.

And more than 330 50-ton segments have been cast and fitted together to form more than 25 guideway spans.

Also rising up near Leeward Community College is HART's operations and control center and its train maintenance yard where construction work on several buildings is taking shape.

Along Kamehameha Highway through Aiea and Pearl City, workers have been busy relocating underground utilities.

It's been a busy year to say the least, and HART would like to thank everyone for their patience, understanding, and safe driving during our construction.

HART TO REBID STATIONS CONTRACT

HART Executive Director and CEO Dan Grabauskas announced earlier this week that the transit authority has canceled the solicitation to build the first nine rail stations.  HART plans to repackage the original contract into three smaller ones and put those out to bid later this year and early in 2015.

"We have decided that it is in the public's best interest to cancel this solicitation and redesign the bid in order to reduce risk to the contractors and thereby reduce costs," Grabauskas said.

The bids received last month came in higher than HART had budgeted.

The change will likely delay by one year the planned opening of the first ten miles of the rail system between Aloha Stadium and east Kapolei.

However, the full 20-mile system from Kapolei to Ala Moana Center is still set to be in operation in late 2019.
