Minnesota Basket Weaver's Guild: A Special Event With Karen Tembreull

Registration Deadline: June 30

Events: July 25, 26, & 27

@ Textile Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota

We are excited to announce that Karen Tembreull will be teaching classes for three days in July 2014. As an artist focused in basketry, Karen's medium is derived primarily from her environment. She is continuously inspired by the abundance of natural material that surrounds her, experimenting with barks, roots, and fibers that seem to lend themselves to textile applications. She also enjoys combining traditional basketry methods with other historical fiber arts and metalworking applications such as piecework, lace making, and fabrication.

Classes: Poplar Bullnose, Pine Pocket, Patchwork Sewing Kit, Bias Woven Barks Basket.

Send your registration and money to: Questions can be directed to Alice at [email protected] or 952-935-4762. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Barks-Roots-Basketry/123171347846588

Woodland Retreat
From the Textile Center Library: ART SPEAKS
Sustainable Fashion Handbook

June 2014 Art Speaks topic: Sustainable Thoughts

This monthly series focuses on a different fiber art topic as a way to explore the Library's extensive circulating collection.

The Sustainable Fashion Handbook by Sandy Black (2013), a sourcebook presenting not just the environmental issues associated with the contemporary fashion industry, but also its social impact.

Wild Fibers Magazine  (Vol 9 Issue 3, Fall 2012), highlights the people creating in fiber around the world, underscoring the role natural fibers have played in developing cultures. This issue delves into Gandhi's clothes as a representation of his politics: "The simple dhoti (or loincloth) that Gandhi wore represented India's ability to produce, manufacture and clothe its people without reliance on foreign imports and support."

Ornament Magazine (Issue 34:3, 2011), includes contemporary, ethnographic, and ancient history, anthropology, and archaeology articles. Curator/writer Roxane Shaughnessy discusses the example of palm-bark rainwear from China as a return to sustainable products. Bark's inherent rain-resistant qualities trumps plastic, manmade rain gear.
