To date, Mountain View College has been awarded approximately $851,000 in grant funds from Texas Workforce's Skills Development Fund (SDF). These grants are part of the 43 million dollars dedicated by the Texas Legislature during their last session. The grants we have received will help create or improve 520 jobs.

How Skills

Development Funds Benefit Businesses and The Community

Grants from the Skills Development Fund allow community and technical colleges to provide customized job-training programs for businesses that want to train new workers or upgrade the skills of their existing workforce. When a business, consortium of businesses, or trade union identifies a training need, and then partners with a public community or technical college to fill its specific needs, grant money from the Skills Development Fund pays for the training, and the college administers the grant. Businesses then work with their college partners to submit proposals, develop curricula and conduct training.

Last year alone, DCCCD colleges were awarded 7 million dollars in SDF grants.

Turning the Corner:
The State of Corporate and Contract Training in Southwest Dallas County
Lorraine Hood-Jack, Account Manager

Things are looking up in the southern sector when it comes to contract training. After a brief run of vacancies and for sale or lease signs, indication of growth and development appears to be returning to South Dallas. New and existing customers have an increased focus on training that will upwardly mobilize their workforce in the area of industrial maintenance, particularly in the areas of welding and machine shop training. In a recent discussion, one my of my clients shared with me how his own thought process had shifted from a need to have a 4-year degree to one of understanding that a skilled worker with a good foundation in industrial maintenance can make a wage equal to or greater than his own. This is a big shift from his and my own upbringing, where a 4-year education was not only stressed, but expected if one had any hope of landing a great career.

We're turning the corner and there are big things on the horizon for contract training.

The Age of Entrepreneurship
Shaniqua Rischer, Small Business & Workforce Grant Manager

In a recent LinkedIn article, Richard Branson, Founder & CEO of Virgin America, declared that 2014 was the year of the entrepreneur, and he couldn't have been more right.  Branson stated, "This year has seen the growing trend of entrepreneurship being embraced as a positive way to create the jobs of the present and the future...The entrepreneurs who will succeed in 2014 will need to focus upon having a purpose beyond profit for their business."  We are living in the Age of Entrepreneurship a time of advancement, much like the one seen during the industrial revolution; except in this age of technology, ease of communication and bringing things from concept to market has opened the door for innovation and the start of new businesses.

So if 2014 is to truly be the year of the entrepreneur, how can you succeed as an entrepreneur?

1. Realize that the dream is free, but the determination to see it come to fruition is sold separately.  In order to be successful as an entrepreneur, you must realize that the work of an entrepreneur never ceases.   There will be countless times you will have to make sacrifices in order to build your business.  However, sacrifice and hard work always pays off.

2. Training is key to growth and networking is the doorway to opportunities.  It is essential that you seek classes, conferences, workshops or seminars that will keep you informed and on the cutting edge in your industry.

3. You must never forget the business side of owning a business.  Most entrepreneurs and small businesses fail because they forget to take care of the foundation of the business.  Knowing the financial bottom lines of your business and remaining organized are tools for success.

4.  The key to being a successful entrepreneur is believing in your dream and being passionate about it, while sharing that same passion with others.

Commit to making the remainder of 2014 the "Year of YOU", as you embark upon your journey to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Start off with the resources and training you need to become a successful entrepreneur by receiving the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Certification at the Entrepreneurial College at Mountain View College. We offer classes in exploring entrepreneurship, business law, accounting, financial statements and taxes, human resource management and more. Call 214-860-8609 for more information.
