Will Hudud Make a State more Islamic?

Building Bridges: Christian-Muslim Dialogue Series
On Thursday, June 19, the Cordoba Initiative hosted one of its ongoing series of interfaith discussions, called "Building Bridges," with leaders of religious organizations from around the city. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf opened the discussion with remarks about the idea of the "Word" according to Christian and Islamic traditions stating that both faiths have a strong connection to the "Word of God," although they each experience it in very different ways.
Despite these differences, Imam Feisal noted the inherent connotations and shared meaning in each faith's conception of the Word. He said, "The Quran is, to us, God's words, God's speech, literally. Christians regard Jesus Christ as the Word of God, but Muslims also do that, because the Quran, which we believe to be ultimately authoritative, states that Jesus was a
kalima, a word, which God cast into Mary." He stated that this was an important concept which could help bridge the two faith traditions.
The next discussion in this series will take place on September 25th. For more information, please contact [email protected]. |
