Hello Friends & Neighbors,

american-flag-wavy.jpg September 11 marks the thirteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks against America that forever changed our world. Today we pause to honor those who were killed, and to rededicate ourselves to the ideals that form the basis of our democracy.

Like so many other Americans, I can vividly remember that fateful September morning. Being less than a mile from the Pentagon that day, I could only witness as American Airlines Flight 77 dove into the Pentagon. Following Flight 77 was a dark plume of smoke encompassing our nation's Capitol.

What I will never forget about the days after September 11, 2001 was the huge wave of patriotism displayed immediately afterward--on our homes, our windows, on lapel pins and on our cars.

I encourage you to join me in looking back on the events of that terrible day, not in sorrow although we mourn those lost, but rather in a recommitment to these values we hold dear. Remember not just the loss, but the response, the outpouring of community support, the offers of help, and the shoulders to lean on.

It is through our ability to serve others and our willingness to be a beacon of hope in an uncertain world that we can truly live up to our potential.

The greatest contribution we can make in our communities and across the globe is to stand up for freedom.

With warmest regards,
