Welcome (and welcome back) to Boston College!

Whether you are a new or returning student, OISS would like to welcome you to BC! We hope this will be a wonderful year for all of you. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come to our office. We are now located in Maloney Hall 441 and our hours are Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm.

Welcome to New Staff!
We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new staff members!  Dominique Cadet, originally from the Boston area, started as the International Advising Assistant in July. Yves Bruno, who was born in Haiti, also began his new position as the SEVIS/Tech Administrator in September. And let's not forget about our new grad assistant, Ernesto Reyes Hernndez! Originally from Cuba, Ernesto has been in the US since he was fifteen and studied abroad in Brazil. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Theology.

International Education Week 2014
Social Justice in the World: Is it Possible?

The OISS is co-sponsoring IEW 2014 with the OIP (Office of International Programs) for 2 weeks, from November 10th through 21st. This year marks the 15th anniversary of this national initiative to raise awareness of different cultures and international issues. Boston College's IEW theme this year centers on social justice, and we have encouraged all student clubs and departments to participate.  Please be on the lookout for emails from us regarding the various events, as well as check the IEW website for up-to-date information.

One highlight will be the annual The World Through Our Eyes Photo Exhibition, with photos taken by the BC community on display from November 4-28th in the Level One Gallery at O'Neill Library.

Conversation Partners Program
Welcome Social

OISS is once again hosting our Conversation Partners Program (CPP). This year we had a record 101 pairs. Thank you all for participating in this program!

Our 2014 CPP Welcome Social took place early this month. Graduate international students met for the first time and had lunch with their conversation partners.

CPP is designed for new international grad students to practice their conversational English with a native English speaker from the BC community.  Each pair plans weekly meetings on or off-campus in order to practice speaking, as well as learn about American sla
ng and culture.  Applications are currently closed for the 2014-2015 academic year but please contact us if you have any questions at [email protected]
Red Sox Game!

As part of our welcome events, OISS organized a baseball night at the famous Fenway Park, where international and exchange students had the chance to see the Boston Red Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays. Though we were sad to see them lose, the atmosphere at the game was exciting.
Tea Talk: Grad Student Support Group

It can be difficult for international grad students to adjust to American culture and to grad student life in general. Therefore the OISS teamed up with University Counseling Services and Grad Student Life to co-sponsor "Tea Talk." This international grad student support group is led by a 2nd year Counseling Psychology international grad student and is open to all international grad students (no administrators attend). Free tea and refreshments are also provided.

The group meets every other Tuesday from 3pm to 4pm in the living room of Murray House in the Grad Student Life Center. Please join them! The remaining meeting dates this semester are Nov 4, Nov 18, and Dec 2nd.
If you have any questions please contact Yaya Huang at [email protected]
International Spouses and Families Fall Events

Caramel Apple Event
Last Sunday, the Office of Grad Student Life sponsored a caramel apple making event for all students and scholars with families. Children arrived in Halloween costumes and enjoyed creating caramel apple masterpieces!

English Corner
The English Corner will be a space in which spouses and families can gather to practice their English skills. This group will meet every Thursday from 11am to 12 noon on the second floor of the cafeteria in Corcoran Commons. All are welcome!

Children's Music Group
Last semester some spouses organized a music group for children. This was a great project and we hope to continue it again this semester. If you are interested in organizing or participating, please contact Dana Riechman at [email protected]
