Doris Ward reaches 20-year milestone in teaching arena

During the annual Honors Day Convocation held on March 20, Doris Ward received the 2014 Professor of the Year award.
Ward, chair of the Division of Natural Sciences, serves as the college's liaison with South Carolina Department of Education Priority School Initiative. The purpose of this is to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of South Carolina K-12 students. Ward is also dedicated to the revitalization of the undergraduate research program in the STEM areas to ensure college graduates are a part of the state's initiative to switch to a technology and knowledge-based economy.
Ward has now been teaching for 20 years. Starting her teaching career in North Carolina at Livingstone College and then Winston-Salem State University, she later taught at Bethune-Cookman University. From there, she arrived at Voorhees, where she has been teaching for seven years.
Ward said that receiving the prestigious Professor of the Year award is very humbling.
"In my teaching, I don't really teach for the purpose of winning an award. I think far from it," said Ward. "So for the officials or whoever on the committee that made the decision, I am truly honored."

The March alumni highlight is Alfonso Lamback, Sr., who received the Outstanding Alumni of the Year award for Voorhees College from the United Negro College Fund at the 68th National Alumni Council/56th National Pre-Alumni Council held in Memphis, Tenn. in February. As an educator, Lamback has served more than 40 years in the educational field in the following capacities: social studies teacher; special education teacher/coach at Clearwater Elementary and Jefferson Junior High School; assistant principal at Leavelle McCampbell Middle School; principal of Warrenville Elementary School; and assistant superintendent for administration for the Aiken County Public School District. His professional recognitions and accomplishments throughout his career include: Allendale-Fairfax High School - Palmetto Gold Award; Leavelle McCampbell Middle School - Palmetto Finest State Award; Palmetto's Finest Regional Winner; Target 2000 Arts in Education Curricula Grant; S.C. Honorable Mention School Incentive Reward; and S.C. Blue Ribbon School. Click HERE to read the entire article. |
Voorhees hosts its Fourth Annual President's Scholarship Gala
Voorhees will be recognizing its presidential scholars at the annual President's Scholarship Gala on Saturday, April 5 at the Charleston Marriot in Charleston at 7 p.m. with a VIP ceremony beginning at 6 p.m.
The 2014 Keeper of the Flame honoree is Jerome Geathers, a 1972 Voorhees alumnus. Geathers is president and CEO of Geathers Enterprises, Inc., which he founded in 1994.
Geathers Enterprises, Inc. operates airport concessions in Charlotte, N.C., owns and manages commercial and residential rental properties and nets annual sales of more than $5 million. Geathers Enterprises, Inc. employs 20 employees.
Geathers previously served as the district director for the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs. In this role, Geathers was responsible for non-discrimination, affirmative-action and equal employment opportunities for federal contractors and sub-contractors throughout North and South Carolina. Voorhees boosts its recruitment initiatives
In an effort to recruit more students, Voorhees College will host two Open House sessions in April.
The first session will be held Sunday, April 6 at the North Charleston site. The North Charleston site is located in the North Rivers Business Center at 2070 Northbrook Blvd., Unit A6, Charleston, S.C. 29406. The second session will be held at the North Augusta site on Sunday, April 13. The North Augusta site is located at 802 East Martintown Road, Suite 1002, North Augusta, S.C. 29841.
Both sessions will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event is open to high school juniors and seniors and their parents. Admissions and financial aid staff will be in attendance to answer any questions. On-the-spot admissions will also be available to students who qualify. Students should bring their high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores.

2014 Founder's Week celebrated at Voorhees
Voorhees will celebrate the 117th founding of the institution at the annual Founder's Day Convocation Thursday, April 10 at 10 a.m. in the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center.
The speaker for convocation will be Attorney Ronnie A. Sabb, president and chief executive officer of the Law Offices of Ronnie A. Sabb, LLC, with offices located in Kingstree and Lake City. He was the second African American to be named an assistant solicitor in Williamsburg County and currently serves as assistant solicitor in charge with the Third Judicial Circuit of South Carolina.
Sabb is the first African American to serve as attorney for Lake City and the first African American to serve as general counsel for Santee Electric Cooperative. The National Council of Negro Woman recognized him as being one of the outstanding business leaders in South Carolina.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Voorhees College in 1980. In 1987, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida Holland Law Center. Sabb has earned many honors and is a member of several civic service, professional and community organizations including: the Williamsburg County Bar Association; Board of Governors for South Carolina; the South Carolina Association for Justice; the American Association for Justice; Board of Governors for the South Carolina Bar Association; South Carolina Commission on Lawyer Conduct; the National Bar Association; the NAACP; and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
