Crop & Field Notes
Dry-Farming - Better Flavor while Conserving Water
The waiting is over, our dry-farmed tomatoes will be in everyone's share this week - about 2 weeks earlier than last year. If only we could dry-farm more of our crops we might not be so worried about water shortages during this current drought cycle. Before the rise of dams and aquifer pumping, much of the American West practiced dry-farming. Today only a handful of perennial crops such as Olives, Grapes, and Apples are still dry-farmed on a limited scale. Along some favorable coastal microclimates farms like ours dry-farm tomatoes, potatoes, and sometimes winter squash. What's special about dry farming is the ability to grow a crop by only utilizing the residual moisture in the soil accumulated during the rainy season. Read more on our web site

CSA Members Comment
We have the most wonderful CSA Members, and our new Choice Share has turned out to be a great addition. Here are some of the comments we've recently received:
I have been a member of two other CSAs in the past. This one is THE BEST. - Barbara B.
I just want you to know that I feel like a ROCK STAR now that I'm getting the CHOICE SHARE box. It feels like I've got a BACK STAGE PASS and FRONT ROW SEATS at LEF being able to be more in control of what I get each week. We were long time regular CSA members, then when kids came, it became more difficult to consume even the small share and had to stop. This new option is perfect for us and we're back again. Thank you for creating this CHOICE SHARE - Loving It!! - Sandy S. & Family I just picked up my first choice share and I am thrilled. Hooray! so glad you are doing this. I took the winter season off from LEF CSA, but was soon missing my LEF fresh veggies. Now I'm back and able to choose. So nice. Thank you for making the extra effort to make these choices possible. It's renewed my commitment to LEF. - Laurel P.
...it has been great getting to choose vegetables each week. My family has many food allergies and it will be especially handy during the main season! - Karen S. If you've been thinking of joining our CSA, now's the time. There are still Choice Shares available and the summer season is upon us, which means more abundance and variety in what we grow. Don't miss out! Click here for Choice Share FAQs
