Russian Programs at KFL

KFL is presenting a series of free community programs on the topic of Russia Resurgent, and will include speakers, films, book discussions, a photo exhibit and a cooking demonstration, held November through February 2015. All programs are free, require no registration and will be held at the Library. The programs are offered in conjunction of the 28th Annual Camden Conference: Russia Resurgent which will take place in Camden in February 2015.

"The Northern Russia Cultural and Cooking Show" will be presented by Kay Leslie, Karin Elliott and Raisa Pelletier on Sat., Jan. 10, 2015 at 1 PM (snow date is Saturday, January 17 at 1 PM). Kay Leslie helped write the Archangel Cookbook (available at the Library) and cooked most of the recipes, Karin Elliott has lived in Russia and Raisa Pelletier is from the city of Archangel.

An illustrated discussion of "The Liberty Ships and Portland's sister city, Archangel, Russia" is scheduled on Sat., Jan. 22, 2015 at 1 PM (snow date is Sat., Jan. 31 at 1 PM). The Greater Portland area formalized a Sister City partnership with Archangel in northwest Russia in 1988; however, the relationship between the two communities began in World War II. Arctic convoys of merchant ships would form in Casco Bay and sail for Archangel, Russia and other locations in war torn Europe. Mainers built more than 200 cargo ships known as Liberty Ships that sailed in these convoys. Neale Duffett of the Archangel Committee will speak about the history of the sister city project and the Liberty Ships. He will have also have photos and crafts from Archangel, Russia.

"Today's Russia in Contemporary Russian Fiction: One Translator's Experience" will be presented by Lisa Hayden on Mon., Feb. 23, 2015 at 6:30 PM (snow date is Wed., Feb. 25 at 6:30 PM). Literary translator Lisa Hayden will look at ways contemporary Russian fiction writers address aspects of Russian history in their work. Lisa will read brief passages from stories and novels she has translated, offering thoughts on cultural and historical themes developed in the works - and on the authors themselves, whom she met when she traveled to Moscow this fall.

Additionally, a Russian Film Series will begin on Tues. Jan. 6, 2015 at 6 PM with A Russian Fairytale (NR). Other films include The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming (UR) on Jan. 13, Children of the Gulag (NR) on Jan. 20, The Russian Soul (NR) on Feb.3, Spy Inside (NR) on Feb. 10. Feb. 17, will be the make up/snow date.

KFL will also offer a book discussion on the book The Overcoat & Other Tales of Good and Evil by Nikola Gogol. There will be two opportunities for discussion: Thurs., Jan.22 at 1 PM (snow date is Thurs. Jan. 29 at 1 PM) and Tues., Feb. 3 at 6:30 PM (snow date is Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 6:30). Books will be available to borrow at the adult circulation desk beginning December 8th.

 KFL's Genealogy Group Meets
Pam Eagleson On Sat., Jan. 3rd at 10 AM Pam Eagleson, CG will present "Confronting Conflicting Evidence"

In genealogical work it's almost a given that researchers will encounter conflicting evidence. This lecture examines ways to analyze and resolve such evidence.

"Genealogy is my passion and I feel fortunate to be able to follow it wherever it takes me. I teach, lecture and write and enjoy mentoring beginning genealogists. Dividing my time between personal research focusing on the mid-Atlantic, mid-West and Germany, and client work in New England, I utilize the resources of several Maine, New England and national repositories."

Pam, a former Trustee of the Kennebunk Free Library, will once again use her talents to benefit the Library's patrons.

Drop-in's are always welcome! For more information, please call the library at 207-985-2173 or email us.

Fantasy Fiction in the Teen Zone

Fantasy novels are a major presence on the shelves of libraries especially in the KFL's Teen Zone. Starting in childhood, many young readers are drawn to this genre and become avid readers due to their passion for this type of fiction. One of the most famous examples of fantasy fiction is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, originally published in 1950 as part of the seven-book Chronicles of Narnia series.  Another famous example is The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien published in 1937. Many grown-up fans of fantasy will also remember The Book of Three series by Lloyd Alexander, published in 1964.

Fantasy fiction tends to run in a series and can extend from three books to as many as seven books. The fantasy genre has come a long way over the years. Contemporary fantasy series that are currently very popular with teens include The Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan, The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann, and The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott.

The events, settings, and characters in the fantasy genre lie outside the realm of possibility. Authors of fantasy fiction carefully create fully realized imaginary worlds. The key to good fantasy is that these worlds are believable. Setting plays a prominent place in the fantasy genre and works almost as character in and of itself.

Magic is a central component of fantasy and stories often involve journeys and quests. These adventurous quest stories grapple with themes addressing the meaning of life, the nature of good and evil, and the personal wisdom gathered through trials and tribulations. Quest stories that are serious in tone are known as high fantasy; the Lord of the Rings is one example of this.

Many fantasy series are set in medieval times and feature talking animals, especially talking dragons. The Squire's Tales by Gerald Morris is set in Medieval England; The Dragonvarld series by Margaret Weiss and the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini both feature talking dragons.

If you are new to fantasy, or if you are a longtime fan, there is sure to be something that pleases at KFL!

Facebook for Businesses--Classes Offered

Interested in setting up a Facebook account to support your business - but don't know how? Want to learn the basics of using Facebook to promote and grow your business?

Unlike 25 million other U.S. small business owners, many of our local business owners with a Facebook page are not using it as a business tool. That is why in January 2015 there will be two (2) FREE 90 minute Facebook workshops at the KFL: "Getting Started with Facebook" and "Building Business with Facebook"

Facebook Business 101: Getting started with Facebook. Local business attendees will leave this 90 minute session not only with a working Facebook Page, but also will learn how to create and post a personal profile and update that with pictures, video and other information.

You must have an active email account and be familiar with how to use a computer, laptop, tablet or iPad. Bring a laptop, iPad, etc. with stored pictures if you can; we will have a limited number of laptops for attendees to use.

Wed., Jan. 7, 2015, 5:45 to 7:15 PM

Facebook Business 201: Building Business with Facebook: Business attendees must already have a working Facebook page as this session goes beyond the basics and includes creating a Facebook Profile for your business as well as how to add and build a business identity (brand) among all your customers and prospects with the objective of making your business relationship with everyone you touch a more personal encounter.

You must have an active Facebook account but please bring business pictures, videos and/or business logos stored on a data stick or send an email with images to yourself. You will also need to bring a computer, laptop, tablet or iPad if you can, but we will have a limited number for attendees to use. Wed., Jan. 14, 2015, 5:45 to 7:15 PM

Snow Date: Wed., Jan. 21, 2015, 5:45 to 7:15 PM

Registration for FREE attendance will be limited to 15 business owners per session. Register now by email or by calling the Library at 985-2173 option 4. Be sure to say which session you plan to attend.

Art Fundraiser at KFL

Do you have a piece of art that no longer appeals to you or matches your decor? What about a print or photo that was gifted to you and doesn't quite "speak" to you?

Now there is a way to turn your treasures into funds for the KFL. During the month of February, donated artwork will be on display in Speers Gallery; a silent auction will be held during the month. Those with the winning bids will be notified on the last day of the show, Feb. 28th.

We will be accepting your donations for this fundraiser from January 2nd through January 28th.

As you prepare for the holidays by cleaning out your closets and basement, consider donating your "treasures" to the KFL when you stumble across your stored artwork.
