Notes from Sunday's Sermon
"COME DOWN OUT OF YOUR TREE-HOUSE" (Luke 19:1-9)
Jesus offered to Zacchaeus true community, deep Christian spirituality, and a passion for justice-the three marks of a healthy church. Look at the first mark-true community. If you go back to our text, you will see in verses 5 and 6 that when Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. Jesus said, "Come down, for I'm going to go to your house and be a guest in your house." And Zacchaeus hurriedly climbed down and took Jesus to his home with great excitement and joy. You see, Jesus exemplified the spirit of true community by reaching out to a lost sinner. Jesus broke with tradition and began a fellowship with an outsider.
Our church is going to change dramatically when we stop inspecting our navel and begin to see that the real work is outside of the church. If we would become less occupied with our petty problems and get involved in the mission of the church, we would find that people will change their attitudes about us and we would change our attitudes about ourselves.
Jesus was interested not in a membership for Zacchaeaus but in a relationship with Zacchaeaus. And the reason that I know that is because Jesus said: "I'm going to come where you live. I'm going to speak your language. I'm going to learn your culture. I'm going to take a seat in your space." You know somebody is really trying to reach you when they come outside of their box, bias, and comfort zone to where you live. I pray that we will get back with a passion to true community, deep Christian spirituality and finally, simply to a passion for justice.
Sincerely in Christ, Pastor Stephen King Memorial Tabernacle Church (CHSC) -------------------------------------------------- Pastor's Blog |

A Mission-Driven Church
Our Mission...
The Memorial Tabernacle Church has come together by the Holy Spirit for the specific purpose of preaching and teaching the word of God, (the Bible), and about Jesus Christ, God's son, and to proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom of God to the North Oakland Community and its environs; to bring healing to the brokenhearted and deliverance to the oppressed.
Our Foundation...
"And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more, as you see the day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25)
"Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God."
(Philippians 4:6)
" Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious care and godly fear and awe."
(Hebrews 12: 28)
