Speaker DeLeo honored at MGH Revere for addiction treatment legislation

The Association of Behavioral HealthCare recognized Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo for his leadership in supporting expanded addiction treatment at an event at MGH Revere. Speaker DeLeo lent his strong leadership to a new law that, among other things, prohibits insurance companies from requiring authorizations prior to admission to medical detox. The Speaker said he accepted this award at MGH Revere with Revere CARES and CCHI, because, when he thinks of substance use disorders, he thinks of Revere CARES. Kitty Bowman of Revere CARES and Dr. Roger Pasinski of MGH Revere led the gathering in congratulating the speaker.

Food Day Chelsea: A celebration of real, healthy food
The Healthy Chelsea Coalition and its partners recently conducted a month-long Food Day Chelsea that encouraged residents to buy and eat fresh, healthy foods. There were grocery shopping tours, taste tests in the Chelsea schools and guides to local restaurants that offer meals and pastries free of artificial trans fat. On Food Day Chelsea, residents pledged to eat "Real" food--foods that are fresh, in their whole form and healthy--for one day.
Issue Brief highlights influence of community assessments on MGH strategic plan

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) recently highlighted the influence of community health needs assessments conducted by CCHI on MGH's  strategic plan. A comprehensive plan to address substance use disorders emerged as the leading clinical priority in the hospital's most recent strategic plan. The Issue Brief also noted MGH's commitment to its community mission through the creation of the Executive Committee on Community Health (ECOCH). This new governance structure aligns community health with the other pillars of MGH's mission: patient care, research and teaching.
Revere's Louis Pasteur playground reopens thanks to state, city and CCHI funding
Members of the Revere on the Move task force, part of the Revere CARES coalition, joined their neighbors to rebuild the Louis Pasteur Park. This was accomplished with a Common Backyard Program grant from the Mass. Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and matching funds from CCHI and the City of Revere. The Environmental Affairs office lauded Revere CARES and the City for the rebuilding efforts that promote physical activity and develop stewardship of the neighborhood park.
CCHI Evaluation presents paper at national conference
CCHI's Danelle Marable and Erica Clarke were invited by the American Evaluation Association to present the Center's community coalition evaluation methods and the benefits of engaging stakeholders throughout the process. Erica described how involving coalition members and community stakeholders in the evaluation helps to develop buy-in, resulting in better data.
The Boston Foundation awards nearly $1 million to MGH
The Boston Foundation recently awarded a five-year, $625,000 grant to MGH to launch of the First 1,000 Days Program, conception to age 2, led by Chief of General Academic Pediatrics Dr. Elsie M. Taveras. The program will engage several MGH departments, including the Center for Community Health Improvement, to create system-wide changes designed to prevent obesity, to promote healthy routines and behaviors and to reduce health disparities among vulnerable children and families.

The Foundation also awarded a three-year, $300,000 grant to the Kraft Center for Community Health Leadership at Partners HealthCare to support a new partnership with the First 1,000 Days Program. This will fund one Kraft Center trainee to serve as an academic partner and on-the-ground "change agent" for the study beginning in Chelsea and Revere, according to Dr. Derri Shtasel, the founding director of the MGH Division of Public and Community Psychiatry and the Executive Director of the Kraft Center.
