Food For Fines Program     
September 2014 

Do you have overdue fees on your account?
Beginning September 2 and running through September 30, patrons can pay down their fines by bringing canned goods and non-perishable food items to the library.  All donations of food in September benefit the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center of New London.  This does not apply to lost or damaged library materials.

Community Knit 
Every Thursday, 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Learn the healing and calming effects of knitting and crocheting.  Socialize with others with the same interest.

Help others by either teaching someone to knit or
making something needed by a child, a senior citizen,
or a homeless person.

Bring your knitting materials!  Some materials may be
provided.  Location: Board Room.


            
Introduction to Computers 
Friday, September 5

This hands-on class is for the beginner who has little or no experience using a computer. It will introduce you to the basics of computer terminology and the popular word processing program  

Microsoft WORD. There are no prerequisites for this class. Seats

Book Discussion - I Am Malala           
Saturday, September 6

We will discuss "I Am Malala" by Malala Yousafzai.

Malala was a student in Pakistan when the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley. Her father had encouraged his daughter to attend school in a society that gives more privileges to sons than daughters. She spoke out for her right to an education and was shot in the head while riding a bus home from school. After a miraculous recovery, Malala became a global symbol of peaceful protest and at age 16, became the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

 

Copies of the book will be available prior to the meeting.  

 

Book discussion will be facilitated by Mongi Dhaouadi, the executive director  

of Council of American- Islamic Relations CT (CAIR CT).

Book Discussion - The Dirty Life

5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

 

 

We will be discussing this year's One Book One Region book The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball.  NYC writer Kristin Kimball's life is changed after interviewing a farmer from Pennsylvania.  She picks up her life and moves with him to 500 acres near Lake Champlain to start a new farm. The plan is to grow everything needed to sustain a community; produce, meats, herbs, dairy, grains, even maple syrup. The Dirty Life takes readers through the adventure that is their first year on the farm, including their wedding.

 

Books are available to check out at the Circulation Desk.
