Congratulations to September's Tracking Incentive Winner!

Karen F. from Tolland County received the prize for her consistent tracking in September and received 2 tickets for the Corn Maze at Scantic Valley Farm in Somers!

We asked Karen why it's important to be part of the 10% Campaign and one of her favorite places to find CT grown products, here's her reply:

I think it's important to be part of the 10% campaign because I think everyone should be supporting their local farmers. My favorite place to do this is at the Ellington Farmers Market.

Keep tracking in the month of October and get entered to win a CT grown and baked pie for your Thanksgiving!!

Featured Establishment - Taylor Brooke Winery

What makes Taylor Brooke Winery unique?

Starting with our wines, I think we have the most (or one of the most) wide range of wines in the State.  There truly is a wine for every palate; dry, semi-dry, whites, reds and 3 very unique dessert wines.  In addition, we spend time with customers during the wine tasting, talking about the history of the winery, what's happening in the vineyard (i.e. how the weather effects the grapes), food pairings, and just generally trying to connect people to our wine via personal stories from our staff.

We have also made a commitment to CT Grapes.  We now have over 7200 grapevines (recently purchased 13 acres to increase, among other things, our vineyard), but we also, whenever possible, supplement our grapes with grapes from other CT growers or wineries.  We ALWAYS do this before we go outside the State to get juice. This is more expensive for us, but we feel it is an important statement to our commitment to CT Grown.

On September 19th over 300 guests gathered at UConn to proudly celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Extension Service. The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 established the Cooperative Extension Service as an educational partnership between the country's land-grant universities and the US Department of Agriculture. Each state has a network of Extension educators throughout the country that stimulate innovative research and deliver vital education programs to adults and youth with a focus on food production, healthy living, environmental sustainability, youth development and leadership. The CT 10% Campaign is one of these programs, connecting and informing CT consumers about local and seasonally grown products in our state.

Centennial celebration guests enjoyed a farm-to-table dinner and a short documentary, by Morty Ortega, highlighting the many contributions that Extension has made around our state. The night concluded with a delicious dessert of Centennial Crunch ice cream, an award-winning flavor created by the UConn Dairy Bar specifically for this celebration!

Congratulations UConn Extension on your 100 years of extending knowledge that changes lives
and to the next century of tying UConn research to real life!
