NEWS AND RESOURCES

Integrating Library Early Learning Programs with State Systems

State governments throughout the U.S. are developing systems to support increased access to and participation in high-quality early learning opportunities. Public libraries have a long history of serving early learners, their families and caregivers - and must be "at the table" as this work unfolds. On Monday, August 4 (2:00-3:30 pm ET), IMLS and the BUILD Initiative are co-presenting a webinar that overviews work underway at the state level as well as strategies that libraries and museums can deploy to ensure their early learning programs are integrated with and aligned to state systems. Libraries and Workforce Development

In a recent blog post to the library and museum communities, IMLS Director Susan Hildreth calls attention to groundbreaking legislation that Congress has passed in the form of the "Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act". The bill recognizes the important role of public libraries in providing crucial job-seeking services in several ways. It affirms that public libraries are eligible for funds as One-Stop centers, providing a range of important job seeking services; recognizes the importance of libraries as centers for adult education and literacy services; and calls upon communities to fully leverage the resources of libraries as providers of digital literacy training. Director Hildreth discusses ways that IMLS will continue to advance libraries as workforce and economic development centers through public-private partnerships and grant funding.

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION

2014 Top Innovator:  JOBLINC

The challenges that job seekers face are varied, complicated and, for many, include limited access to transportation, no computer or Internet access at home as well as a lack of digital literacy skills. The Memphis Public Library is meeting these challenges head-on with JOBLINC, a mobile career center that travels to community centers, library branches, community agencies, grocery stores, malls, and other public areas to meet with people who are looking for jobs.  Library staff are on the bus and available to help people with computer skills; resume preparation, and preparing for job interviews. Additional services include setting up email accounts, health information, assistance in filing for unemployment benefits, test prep, financial literacy and higher education counseling. Anything related to jobs and careers - JobLINC is there to help.

ULC's 2014 Urban Player Award

Joan and Irwin Jacobs, San Diego philanthropists and civic leaders are the 2014 recipients of ULC's Urban Player Award.  The award celebrates their instrumental support and advocacy which propelled construction of the new San Diego Central Library, enabling it to open in September 2013 debt-free, with no City bonds, general fund dollars or new taxes.  In total, the Jacobs contributed $30 million to the $185 million project and leveraged an additional $35 million in contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.

Each year, the Urban Player Award honors individuals who stands out as strong and effective advocates for the essential leadership role of public libraries in local communities. The Urban Player Award was established in 2001 to honor Seattle civic leader and former chair of ULC's Executive Board, Betty Jane Narver. Read more about the leadership of Joan and Irwin Jacobs.
