Stamp Out Hunger - On Saturday, May 10, letter carriers across the country will be collecting food for families in need.  If you would like to help, simply collect and bag non-perishable food items and place them by your mailbox for letter carriers to deliver to a local food bank or pantry.  Donatable items include canned meats, fish, soup, juice, vegetables, pasta, cereal, peanut butter and rice.

 

DTE Energy Community Garden Kick-Off - Residents are invited to join in the DTE Energy Community Garden Kick Off on Saturday, May 10 starting at 9:00 a.m. at the back of the DTE Training and Development site at 38155 Cherry Hill Rd.  The event will run till 12:00 p.m. but Volunteers are welcome to come and leave at any time during the listed timeframes.  Feel free to invite your friends and family. No gardening experience is required, and all ages are welcome.  Please be sure to bring drinking water, wear close-toed shoes and bring shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows if you have them.  RSVPs are appreciated but not required.  RSVP to: [email protected] or (734) 545-2758.

 

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location. 

-There will be an Open Study Session on Monday, May 12 at 5:30 p.m. regarding Budget Amendments at Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.

-There will be an Open Study Session on Monday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m. regarding the Recyclebank at Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.

-There will be a meeting of the Tax Increment Finance Authority on Tuesday, May 13 at 8:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall located at 36601 Ford Rd.

-The Parks and Recreation Advisory on Tuesday, May 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.

-The Civil Service Commission Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 14 at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Conference Room in Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.

 

Compassionate City Meeting - The City of Westland has officially become a Compassionate City, making Westland a partner in an international effort.  Residents are invited to attend, Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Westland Friendship Center, located at 1119 Newburgh Rd.  At this meeting, the "Compassionate Games" (which will be held on July 19) will be discussed, as well as the upcoming Zumbathon.

 

History of Eloise - The William P. Faust Westland Public Library is having a presentation on the History of the famed Westland Eloise Hospital on Tuesday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m.  Local historian Jo Johnson will lead a presentation on the former hospital's grounds and buildings while Georgia Becker will discuss her time growing up at Eloise during its heyday. Friday Night Dinner and a  Movie - The William P. Faust Westland Public Library will host its last "Friday Night Dinner and a Movie" on Friday, May 16 beginning at 6:30 p.m.  This week's dinner is pizza and salad and the movie is "Philomena." (Rated R) For each movie, the library provides movie-related trivia and prizes, as well as,  snacks and refreshments.  Doors open at 6:30, movie starts at 7 p.m. 

 

Relay for Life Bowling Fundraiser - The Westland-Wayne Relay for Life Team is having a bowling fundraiser on Friday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m.  The event will take place at Westland Bowl, located at 5940 Wayne Rd.  The cost is $20 per person and all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.  

 

North Brothers Ford 5K/Mayors Mile - The Westland Buddy Up program will join North Brothers Ford in a 5K/Mayors Mile fun run/walk on Saturday, May 17.  Runners must pre-register by Saturday, May 10 to participate.  Race Day check-in starts at 8:00 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.  The event will take place at Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.  All the proceeds from the event will go to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute for Cancer Research.

 

Blood Pressure/ Glucose Screening-   Every Thursday there will be blood pressure/ glucose screenings by Rite Choice Home Health at the Friendship Center located at 1119 N Newburgh rd. For more information contact 734-722-7628.
