Shining Reflection
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
"BRINGING ILLUSIONS TO TRUTH"
V. "The Recognition of Holiness"

44 Could you but realize for a single instant the power of healing that the reflection of God, shining in you, can bring to all the world, you could not wait to make the mirror of your mind clean to receive the image of the holiness that heals the world. The image of holiness which shines in your mind is not obscure and will not change. Its meaning to those who look upon it is not obscure, for everyone perceives it as the same. All bring their different problems to its healing light, but all their problems are met only with healing there.

*IAMBIC PENTAMETER*

What has been given you? The knowledge that

you are a mind, in Mind and purely mind,

   sinless forever, wholly unafraid

because you were created out of Love.

Nor have you left your Source, remaining as

you were created. This was given you

as knowledge which you cannot lose. It was

given as well to every living thing,

for by that knowledge only does it live.

You have received all this. No one who walks

the world but has received it. It is not

this knowledge which you give, for this is what

creation gave. All this cannot be learned.

What, then, are you to learn to give today?

Our lesson yesterday evoked a theme

found early in the text. Experience

cannot be shared directly in the way

that vision can. The revelation that

the Father and the Son are One will come

in time to every mind. Yet is that time

determined by the mind itself, not taught.

The time is set already. It appears

to be quite arbitrary. Yet there is

no step along the road that anyone

but takes by chance. It has already been

taken by him, although he has not yet

embarked on it. For time but seems to go

in one direction. We but undertake

a journey that is over. Yet it seems

to have a future yet unknown to us.

Time is a trick; a sleight of hand, a vast

illusion in which figures come and go

as if by magic. Yet there is a plan

behind appearances which does not change.

The script is written. When experience

will come to end your doubting has been set.

For we but see the journey from the point

at which it ended, looking back on it,

imagining we make it once again,

reviewing mentally what has gone by.

The teacher does not give experience,

because he did not learn it. It revealed

itself to him at its appointed time.

But vision is his gift. This he can give

directly, for Christ's knowledge is not lost

because He has a vision He can give

to anyone who asks. The Father's Will

and His are joined in knowledge. Yet there is

a vision which the Holy Spirit sees

because the mind of Christ beholds it too.

Here is the joining of the world of doubt

and shadows made with the intangible.

Here is the quiet place within the world

made holy by forgiveness and by love.

   Here are all contradictions reconciled,

for here the journey ends. Experience,

unlearned, untaught, unseen, is merely there.

This is beyond our goal, for it transcends

what needs to be accomplished. Our concern

is with Christ's vision. This we can attain.

Christ's vision has one law; it does not look

upon a body and mistake it for

the Son whom God created. It beholds

a light beyond the body; an idea

beyond what can be touched, a purity

   undimmed by errors, pitiful mistakes,

and fearful thoughts of guilt from dreams of sin.

It sees no separation. And it looks

   on everyone, on every circumstance,

all happenings and all events, without

the slightest fading of the light it sees.

This can be taught, and must be taught by all

who would achieve it. It requires but

the recognition that the world can not

give anything that faintly can compare

with this in value, nor set up a goal

which does not merely disappear when this

   has been perceived. And this you give today;

see no-one as a body. Greet him as

the Son of God he is, acknowledging

that he is one with you in holiness.

Thus are his sins forgiven him, for Christ

has vision which has power to overlook

them all. In His forgiveness they are gone.

Unseen by One, they simply disappear

because a vision of the holiness

which lies beyond them comes to take their place.

It matters not what form they took, nor how

enormous they appeared to be, nor who

seemed to be hurt by them. They are no more,

and all effects they seemed to have are gone

with them, undone and never to be done.

Thus do you learn to give as you receive.

And thus Christ's vision looks on you as well.

This lesson is not difficult to learn

if you remember in your brother you

see but yourself. If he be lost in sin

so must you be; if you see light in him

your sins have been forgiven by yourself.

Each brother whom you meet today provides

another chance to let Christ's vision shine

on you and offer you the peace of God.

It matters not when revelation comes,

for that is not of time. Yet time has still

one gift to give in which true knowledge is

reflected in a way so accurate

   its image shares its unseen holiness;

its likeness shines with its immortal Love.

We practice seeing with the eyes of Christ

today. And by the holy gifts we give

Christ's vision looks upon ourselves as well.

Sarah's Commentary:

I have spent a big part of my life trying to get approval, affirmation, recognition, and love from others. I wanted to be seen as helpful, smart, loveable, creative, supportive and a million other things. It was not until this Course came into my life that I learned that how I see myself is not dependent on how everyone sees me, but how I see them! Everyone is just a reflection of my mind! The only way that I can know the Self that I am as innocent and whole is to see my brother in the same way. It is to see with Christ's vision and not with my own interpretation of who my brother is. This learning is dependent on taking responsibility for my projections on others by seeing that they all come from my own mind. In other words the judgments I have about myself are what I see in others. They are shadows of what I don't want to acknowledge in myself. The people in our lives that we tend to attract that are particularly annoying to us are those who reflect this shadow side of ourselves that we are unwilling to acknowledge. We would rather blame them and judge them than take responsibility for our projections, yet healing happens when we take back our projections and bring them to the Holy Spirit, Who will shine them away. Now space is made for the miracle.

So it is not about striving to get others to see me in the way I want to be seen, but instead to clean up my projections on others and see that it is all coming from my own unhealed perceptions. Thus everyone is a mirror in which I see myself. "This lesson is not difficult to learn, if you remember in your brother you but see yourself." (W.158.10.3) It is not how you see me, but how I see you that reflects the state of my mind.

"If he be lost in sin, so must you be; if you see light in him, your sins have been forgiven by yourself." (10.4) So our practice today is about seeing with the eyes of Christ. "Today I let Christ's vision look upon all things for me and judge them not, but give each one a miracle of love instead." (W.P.II.349) Or as the prayer in lesson 295 says: "Help me to use the eyes of Christ today, and thus allow the Holy Spirit's Love to bless all things which I may look upon, that His forgiving Love may rest on me." (W. P.II.295.2.2) To see with Christ's vision is to see the innocence in our brothers.

The lesson starts with the reminder that we get over and over in this Course. It is that our reality is totally sinless, purely spirit, invulnerable, created out of love and that there is nothing that we can do or have done to change our reality. That is what the Atonement Principle is about: assuring us that we are still the same as we were created, holy, pure and innocent.  Regardless of what terrible things we judge ourselves for, we can't change the truth of who we really are. Yes, we have blocked awareness of our reality, but that does not mean that we can change the Self that we are. Our entire work with the Course is to remember the truth about ourselves that we have kept hidden from awareness. It can only be accomplished when we look at our misperceptions and bring them to the truth.

We believe that our reality is a body and a personality with a story that we tell of our lives in the world. None of this is true. We are not these bodies that we identify ourselves with. Neither are we our past, our mistakes, our 'sins', our sadness, our roles, our self concepts, or our stories. Nothing I believe that I have done in my years on this planet have changed anything about my reality as a Mind, which is and always has been forever sinless. Christ's vision looks past the body to the Son of God as He really is and sees the light of holiness there. Our reality is "an idea beyond what can be touched," (7.3) by all these seeming sins. Christ's vision "beholds a light beyond the body," "a purity undimmed by errors." (7.3) There is no specialness in this love as it is not selective. Everyone is the same. Everyone has the same light of divinity within and shares the same need to wake up from this dream.

Differences were made by the ego so that we could project our own guilt onto others. Thus see the guilt in them. That way we could claim our innocence at the expense of our brother's perceived guilt. It is innocence that is bought at their expense in the belief that we can avoid punishment from a wrathful god whom we hope will see us as the victim of attacks that are not our own. This is just a ruse and somewhere in our minds we know that this is so.

When we see bodies and what they seem to do in the world, we do see a lot of sinful behavior with acts of attack, murder, wars, betrayals, competition, thievery, etc. Again, it is important to recognize that while the form of the attacks differs, in the end it is our sins that we are putting on others. No, I have not murdered anyone, nor have I killed anyone in war, but the murderous thoughts are the same. They kill my peace of mind and make me forget who I am. So while I prefer to see the wrongdoing in my brothers, the error in the mind is the same. It is my own guilt that I conveniently projected out there, and now see it in my brothers, while seeing myself as white as the driven snow. This is a false picture of myself. It is one that keeps me from seeing the guilt in my own mind. The only way that we can see beyond all these behaviors and thus see with Christ's vision, is to bring the projections that we see out there back into our own minds and see the enemy within. Now we have the power to choose again. Only in this way can we clear the way for Christ's vision, and only in this way can we awaken to who we are.

Christ's vision will then overlook all the seeming sins that we see in the world so that, "In His forgiveness are they gone." (9.2) Further, the form of the sins does not matter, or how enormous they appear to be, or who seems hurt by them because the effects are completely undone. There is no hierarchy in illusions. All illusions can be put in one category, which is that they are not true, and even more amazing, he says that they are no more and "never to be done." (9.6) So through forgiveness, what appeared to happen is wiped away, and the only way we can really understand this is to realize that this world and our experiences here are all illusory. They are all dreamt by the mind that seemed to fall asleep to who it really is. This is the only way that forgiveness makes sense. It is forgiving our brothers for what they have not done. Ultimately nothing real has happened. It is a pretty amazing thought when we look at some of the horrors of the world, to accept that in truth it all never happened. It was all just a dream, no different than what we see when we awaken from our nighttime dreams and realize their unreality.

This has to be understood within the context of discussion of time and the script. First in relation to time, he tells us that we seem to be on a journey through time, but that journey is already over. To us time goes in one direction with a lot of events that seem entirely arbitrary where the future is unknown with circumstances changing, events taking place, people coming and going, dying and being born. It all seems to flow through time. And it does seem that the unexpected events of our lives, which turn everything up-side-down and create chaos, come out of nowhere. Yet, Jesus says "there is a plan behind appearances that does not change." (4.2) Further, while things appear arbitrary to us, "there is no step along the road that anyone takes but by chance." (3.3)

It has all already happened since time is over. We are just reliving an experience in our memory remembering it from the end of the journey. The journey is over. It has already happened, which we will know when we wake up. A fuller discussion of this can be found in Chapter 26.V. "The Little Hindrance" where Jesus says, "Time lasted but an instant in your mind, with no effect upon eternity. And so is all time past, and everything exactly as it was before the way to nothingness (illusion) was made." (T.26.V.3.3-4) Yet, while time is meaningless we do believe in it so "why should you waste it going nowhere, when it can be used to reach a goal as high as learning can achieve?" (T. 26.V.2.3) What we can achieve by our learning is vision or true perception.

Furthermore, if "The script is written," (4.3), and the time has been set when our experience comes to an end, meaning all of our doubting thoughts are gone, then is everything determined? Is it all just fate? Is there nothing we can do? It certainly seems all determined, yet we read that we can save thousands of years as we do our forgiveness work and we can skip parts of this mental review, which is what the miracle does. It is not all determined by time. Miracles enable us to save time, and ultimately we will all experience revelation or awakening. When that happens is determined by how willing we are to participate in the process of our salvation. Our part is to let go of our defenses. It is to look at how we deny taking responsibility. The world can be such an awesome classroom when used for healing purposes. It means that everything that seems to be happening to us can be seen as a wonderful opportunity to learn to undo our untrue selves so that the Christ Self can be revealed.

The important thing is not to linger here by being tempted to delay our awakening. We are already at the end of the journey just imagining that we are making it again. So the story is already over, but we won't know that until we are ready to experience it. Another way to see this was explained to me by a friend who says that he imagines himself sitting with Jesus in a theater and the story they are watching together is some portion of his life that seems to be unfolding. It is a way to recognize that we are the dreamer of this story and not one of its characters. When we identify with the story, as we might identify with a movie we are watching, we forget that the characters are just dream figures and we are drawn into feelings of anxiety, laughter, sadness or grief. In the same way, we can get lost in our own movie of our lives and identify with what is happening as if it is all real. Unlike the movie, where we are released from our identification when the movie is over, in our lives we take it all very seriously. Then instead of watching the characters, we become those characters. Our healing happens when we remember to step out of the movie and watch it all without judgment. Nothing in the story is right or wrong, good or bad. It is just all unreal. We can now choose to observe what has already happened.

And so we undertake this practice as an important use of time. With each lesson that we undertake we are learning to do that. We are learning to see with vision. It is like learning a language where we do language labs and grammar studies, the purpose of which is ultimately to speak and understand the language. It is the same with the lessons. We do the lessons and the meditations, not as an end in themselves, but as a way of strengthening our ability to forgive and to see with spiritual vision, which is precisely the goal of the Course.

The Manual for Teachers, speaks more about the world of time saying that, "What happened long ago seems to be happening now. Choices made long since appear to be open; yet to be made. What has been learned and understood and long ago passed by is looked upon as a new thought, a fresh idea, a different approach. Because your will is free you can accept what has already happened at any time you choose, and only then will you realize that it was always there." (M.2.3.2-5)

Jesus knows that we will have a great deal of struggle trying to understand all this so he says that, "There is no need to further clarify what no one in the world can understand. When revelation of your oneness comes, it will be known and fully understood. Now we have work to do," (W.PI.169.10.1-3)

We need not be concerned with the final experience of revelation, but only with each act of forgiveness, which brings us closer to that time which is already set. Everything we experience is perfect for our learning. Nothing is by chance. Everything is as it needs to be. All we need to do is to accept and to allow. There is nothing to strive for. In fact striving is of the ego. We need not concern ourselves with when the time will be there for our awakening. We need not get anxious or feel guilty at our rate of progress. We only need to do what is in front of us each day in applying the lessons. Leave the rest to the Holy Spirit.

So for now, let us be comforted by the fact that to learn to give as I receive is a lesson that we are told is not difficult to learn "if you remember in your brother you but see yourself. If he be lost in sin, so much you be; if you see light in him, your sins have been forgiven by yourself." (10.3-4) "Each brother whom you meet today provides another chance to let Christ's vision shine on you, and offer you the peace of God." (10.5) If anyone seems to be attacking me, then it is just another opportunity for me to see my own guilt reflected back at me. What I am seeing are the thoughts that I have already chosen within. It is an outward picture that I am seeing of my own inward condition. "Here is the joining of the world of doubt and shadows made with the intangible." (6.1) It is bringing our misperceptions, based on our wrong-minded thought system,  to the light of the Atonement, (the intangible). Thus we can experience the "quiet place within the world made holy by forgiveness and by love," (6-2) until our journey ends at the real world and Heaven's gate.

Christ's vision is like the stepping stone between the experience of time, illusion and the world and Heaven. When we have reached the real world, then we are done with this journey and "Experience---unlearned, untaught, unseen---is merely there." (6.4) So we need to only concern ourselves with getting closer to vision, which is true perception, and when that is achieved, experience is just remembered at the appointed time, not learned. The journey ends in the experience of the real world. That is the goal of this Course. We learn that we are all the same, not in form, but in our shared need to wake up from this dream. This is the reflection of the truth that we are One. We just need to be willing to do what is in front of us now instead of worrying about when we will achieve Heaven. "Now you must learn that only infinite patience produces immediate effects." (T.5.VI.12.1)

V. The Recognition of Holiness

38 The Atonement does not make holy. You were created holy. It merely brings unholiness to holiness, or what you made to what you are. The bringing together of truth and illusion, of the ego to God, is the Holy Spirit's only function. Keep not your making from your Father, for hiding it has cost you knowledge of Him and of yourselves. The knowledge is safe, but wherein is your safety apart from it? The making of time to take the place of timelessness lay in the decision to be not as you were. Thus, truth was made past, and the present was dedicated to illusion. And the past, too, was changed and interposed between what always was and now. The past which you remember never was and represents only the denial of what always was.

39 Bringing the ego to God is but to bring error to truth, where it stands corrected because it is the opposite of what it meets and is undone, because the contradiction can no longer stand. How long can contradiction stand when its impossible nature is clearly revealed? What disappears in light is not attacked. It merely vanishes because it is not true. Different realities are meaningless, for reality must be one. It cannot change with time or mood or chance. Its changelessness is what makes it real. This cannot be undone. Undoing is for unreality. And this reality will do for you.

40 Merely by being what it is does truth release you from everything that it is not. The Atonement is so gentle you need but whisper to it, and all its power will rush to your assistance and support. You are not frail with God beside you. Yet without Him you are nothing. The Atonement offers you God. The gift which you refused is held by Him in you. His Spirit holds it there for you. God has not left His altar, though His worshiper placed other gods upon it. The temple still is holy, for the Presence that dwells within it is Holiness.

41 In the temple Holiness waits quietly for the return of them that love it. The Presence knows they will return to purity and to grace. The graciousness of God will take them gently in and cover all their sense of pain and loss with the immortal assurance of their Father's Love. There, fear of death will be replaced with joy of living. For God is Life, and they abide in Life.  [Life is as holy as the Holiness by which it was created.] The Presence of Holiness lives in everything that lives, for Holiness created life and leaves not what It created holy as Itself.

42 In this world you can become a spotless mirror in which the Holiness of your Creator shines forth from you to all around you. You can reflect Heaven here. Yet no reflections of the images of other gods must dim the mirror that would hold God's reflection in it. Earth can reflect Heaven or hell; God or the ego. You need but leave the mirror clean and clear of all the images of hidden darkness you have drawn upon it. God will shine upon it of Himself. Only the clear reflection of Himself can be perceived upon it. Reflections are seen in light. In darkness they are obscure, and their meaning seems to lie only in shifting interpretations rather than in themselves.

43 The reflection of God needs no interpretation. It is clear. Clean but the mirror, and the message which shines forth from what the mirror holds out for everyone to see no one can fail to understand. It is the message that the Holy Spirit is holding to the mirror that is in him. He recognizes it because he has been taught his need for it but knows not where to look to find it. Let him, then, see it in you and share it with you.

45 The response of holiness to any form of error is always the same. There is no contradiction in what holiness calls forth. Its one response is healing, without regard for what is brought to it. Those who have learned to offer only healing because of the reflection of holiness in them are ready at last for Heaven. There, holiness is not a reflection but rather the actual condition of what was but reflected to them here. God is no image, and His creations, as part of Him, hold Him in them in truth. They do not merely reflect truth, for they are truth.
