  OUR NEIGHBORS ARE OUR             CONGREGATION

"We have a fabulous opportunity to interact, engage, build relationships,

and make disciples with the people living and working in the communities surrounding us."

~Joe Daniels; "Walking with Nehemiah: Your Community is Your Congregation"

I received an email from one of our neighbors on Ridge Street. He briefly described his busy, stressful life and how he doesn't have time to attend church. Then he wrote: thank you.

He is grateful for the presence of MCCDC on Ridge Street. On his way to other places, he pauses at our Peace Pole on the corner of 5th & Ridge and breathes a silent prayer. I believe this is a worship experience. Even though he has never worshipped inside our sanctuary, he has worshipped outside our sanctuary. I believe that makes him a part of our congregation.

The landscaping leading to and surrounding the Peace Pole is a reminder that God's beauty shines through, even in a broken neighborhood and world.

Our physical presence on 5th & Ridge NW offers a spiritual presence. This is also true of our beautiful Prayer Garden on M Street. Indeed, it became an extension of our Sanctuary as the site of the Blessing of the Animals service on October 4.   Similar to our neighbor on Ridge Street, some of our neighbors on M Street have expressed gratitude. Four of them attended the Blessing of the Animals Service.

The responses of our neighbors remind me of who we are called to be as MCCDC:

We are a congregation of disciples called to serve the congregation that is our neighborhood.

In other words: our neighbors are our congregation!

That's one of the reasons we are having a Worship and Service Day this Sunday following the 9:00am and 11:00am services. Planting flowers on Ridge Street extends our message of love in a beautiful and friendly way. Picking up trash says to our neighbors: "We love you and value you. You are worthy of living on a beautiful street." Raking leaves is an act of prayer. Hauling mulch is a form of worship.

My message for Sunday includes Paul's encouragement to bring God's love into the world: "We remember your work that comes from faith, your effort that comes from love. . ." (1 Thess. 1:2). This Sunday, we will put Scripture into immediate action.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday.   If you are not able to remain after services, please attend worship: your presence at worship and ongoing prayers are a wonderful gift.

Faithfully,

Rev. Dwayne

On Saturday, October 25, Unid@s, the MCCDC Hispanic/Latin@ outreach ministry, will once again hold its monthly worship service at 6pm in the sanctuary here at MCCDC. We will have wonderful music, liturgy, great food and fellowship. Rev. Alberto Njera will be our celebrant and preacher who will deliver Jesus' Good News of radically inclusive love. This will be a special service as we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15).

The service will be mostly in Spanish; however, the Scripture readings and the sermon are usually translated into English.  So whether or not you are a Spanish speaker, please come and celebrate this joyous occasion with us! MCC STATEMENT

OF FAITH REPORT

The report presents the results of the first round of surveys developed by the Commission on the MCC Statement of Faith. Along with feedback forms on the MCC denominational website, the surveys were launched with the intention of initiating a grass-roots dialogue with the various constituencies of MCC as we begin our task: to review, renew, and update our MCC Statement of Faith as authorized by the 2013 General Conference.

MCCDC is sponsoring a group to attend

"Taking Church to the Community Conference"

Saturday, November 1, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Wesley Theological Seminary

No longer can we simply ask, "What can we do to get people to come to our church?" We must also consider, "How can we go into the world to encounter those in need of the gospel?" At Taking Church to the Community, you will explore strategies your congregation can use to reach beyond its walls with worship, community events, ministries, and service - meeting community members where they are and moving them toward discipleship.

Taking Church to the Community is ecumenical and designed for both laity and clergy.

Presentations and Workshops

  • The Outside-in Church
  • Go Where the People Are
  • Becoming an Interactive Congregation
  • Blessing Your Community
  • Discipleship 101: Getting Ready
  • Ministries and Community Engagement: Heading Out!
  • Reaching Out through Community Events

If you would like to attend, please contact Rev Cathy Alexander by October 21st  at revcathy@mccdc.com or 202-638-7373.
