CME Opportunity
The Wisconsin Women's Health Foundation, in partnership with CS2Day and IPMA, is pleased to announce a new web-based CME entitled Perinatal Smoking Cessation: Challenges and Opportunities.

This CME/CE activity provides in-depth information about smoking cessation during the weeks just prior to and after delivery and is presented by a panel of Wisconsin-based providers. It includes case studies illustrating effective strategies for treating tobacco dependence in the perinatal population and common barriers to quitting smoking.

Details, including a link to the course, can be found here.

Health Information

Type 2 Diabetes May Shrink the Brain - A new study suggests that people with Type 2 Diabetes may lose more brain volume than expected as they age. Researchers said there may be two ways diabetes affects the brain: damage to blood vessels and brain-cell degeneration. The additional damage may be more like a disorder such as Alzheimer's. The study did not determine whether treating diabetes will prevent or slow the brain shrinkage.  Read more on the study.

Breast Cancer Conference for Community Health Workers The American Cancer society is sponsoring a breast cancer conference for community health workers at the Italian Conference Center in Milwaukee on Friday, May 30 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is free but limited. Register online here or toll free at (888) 523-7581.

Silver Alert Program - Last month, Wisconsin joined 41 other states that have Silver Alert-type systems. The Silver Alert system notifies the public in case of a missing elderly person, much like the Amber Alert system does in case of a missing child in danger. More than 110,000 adults in Wisconsin have dementia and approximately 60 percent of elderly affected by dementia will become lost or wander.  If these individuals are not found within 24 hours, many will suffer serious injury or death.

Health Observances

June Observances

Please see last month's newsletter for information on the following June observances or click on the links below:

June is also National Dairy Month which ties in nicely with osteoporosis.  So if you weren't able to do a Women and Bone Health session in April for Osteoporosis Month, maybe one during Dairy Month!

Feel free to use this article during June Dairy Month in your bulletins or newsletters.

July Observances

International Group B Strep Awareness Month - Group B Strep (GBS) is the leading cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.) 1 in 4 pregnant women carry GBS, and each pregnancy can be different. GBS can also infect babies during pregnancy and the first few months of life.

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month - It is a common misconception that only  "old" people are afflicted with arthritis. Nearly 300,000 children in America have been diagnosed with juvenile arthritis (JA). An umbrella term that describes the many autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that can develop in children 16 or younger, JA is not the same as grandma's aches and pains. Their body's immune system is attacking their joints, causing swelling, stiffness and permanent damage. This condition is extremely serious; if left untreated it can result in death.

National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness & Prevention Month - Thousands of infants, children, teens and adults in the United States each year are affected by cleft and craniofacial conditions. Visit the website to learn more about these conditions, including causes, prevention, treatment and support.
Thank you for all you do for the GrapeVine Project.

Sincerely,
