Our Newest Program!

Independence Inc.'s new assistive technology grant program assists individuals with disabilities throughout Kansas in acquiring assistive technology and accessible modifications to their homes.

By providing these grants, we hope to reduce barriers to community participation, improve employment and self-employment, and increase quality of life across the state.

The grants can be up to $2,000 per request, per person, per year. Some examples are technology assistance in the areas of vision, hearing, communication, mobility, home modifications, computers and related equipment, and recreation and leisure.

Applications can be found on Independence Inc.'s website

Please note: This program is based out of our satellite office in Emporia. The address is 215 W. 6th Avenue, Suite 105A in Emporia KS.  For more information about the program, contact Mary Ann Newton at the satellite office in Emporia at 620-341-9002. Read more about Mary Ann below!

Year of Giving Continues
Meet Our Newest Staff Members

Mary Ann Newton, Assistive Grant Technology Coordinator:

"Hi, my name is Mary Ann Newton.  I have worked with individuals with disabilities for the past 26 years.  Some of my experience has been, transition specialist with the Special Education Cooperative, loan specialist to help put assistive technology into the lives of people with disabilities.  I am now the coordinator of the NEW Assistive Technology Grant Program with Independence, Inc.  This is such an exciting time!  My program covers the entire state of Kansas, so give me a call as I love to be of assistance to others.

I also serve as co-chairman of Disability Mentoring Day in Lyon County.  My satellite office is located in Emporia, Kansas.  I may be reached by email [email protected] or by phone 620-341-9002.  I would love to visit with you about your assistive technology needs."

JoAnne Fluke, Independent Living Specialist:

"I am SOOOO EXCITED to be at Independence Inc.!!!!  Hi my name is JoAnne Fluke.  I am the new Independent Living Specialist primarily for Franklin County.  But I will also be helping our other Independent Living Specialists when they get too stretched.  I am sure that never happens around here at Independence Inc. :)

So I told you am I SOOOO EXCITED but now let me tell you why.  I have a little secret...I have wanted to be a part of the Independence Inc. team ever since I was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Kansas 2005 because of how well they impact the Disability Community.

I was born with a birth defect called Caudal Regression.  This mean that my legs are webbed at the knee, my spine stops at my waist and I have no feeling from my waist down.  But like many of you with challenges that has not stopped me to live life to its fullest!  I went to Baker University.  I was a Youth Director for ten years at the First Christian Church in Ottawa, KS.  I have been on two mission trips to Ghana, Africa to encourage and motivate the Disability Community there.  But the thing I am most passionate about is DANCE!  I am the Executive Director of Groovability.  Groovability is a non-profit organization that provides the opportunity to dance to all with an emphasis towards people with physical disabilities.  We do this through Ballroom and Zumba.  Not going to lie I think it is a lot of fun but I am a little bias.  But it never seems to fail I will tear up when I see someone with a disability realize they can truly dance!

I am looking forward to seeing what the future brings at Independence Inc. because like dance I tear up when I see people realize they can be even more independent.  So I hope I will need to carry a couple tissues with me. :)"

Transportation Spotlight
"Independence Inc. has provided wonderful transportation services to
support my appointment needs.  The scheduling has gone with great ease
and the availability to use technology to schedule a month in advance
is a nice service.  No matter how much notice has been given
transportation has been able to support the change in plan.  Each
driver I have had has been supportive, friendly, professional,
accommodating, and very courteous. I have especially enjoyed having
the same driver since I drive to Kansas City every single morning. In
conclusion, Independence Inc.  support provided a service that took a
huge burden off not only myself, but my family's mind. We would like
to thank each and every member of the transportation department."
