CNP Releases Results of Fundraising Practices Survey

Over the last month, the Center for Nonprofits has conducted a brief survey of regional nonprofits concerning their fundraising practices.  Below is a summary of the results:

  • Nearly 70% of respondents have staff whose primary responsibility is fundraising.  Those nonprofits that do have staff typically have three staff members or fewer working on fundraising.
  • More than 80% of respondents have a written fundraising plan for their organization.
  • At nearly 40%, individual donors make up the largest component of respondent's raised funds, followed by government grants at 25%, then special events at nearly 19%.
  • Around 50% of respondents have addressed planned giving in some way; around 60% have previously launched a capital campaign; around 50% have endowments.
  • Nearly 70% of respondents use a donor database system, but not all would recommend their database to other organizations.  Both e-Tapestry and DonorPerfect were mentioned as databases that users would recommend to others.
  • Nearly 80% of respondents indicate that their boards are very involved or are somewhat involved in fundraising.

Respondents also indicated a strong interest in training for their fundraising staffs and volunteers.  Training on topics such as building a fundraising plan, fundraising via social media, relationship-based fundraising and major gifts showed the most interest. Be on the lookout for CNP's training calendar for June through October.  It will be posted here in the next few weeks.
