Special Update: Institute of Medicine Report on CTSAs
On Tuesday, June 25, the Institute of Medicine at the behest of NIH issued a report on the CTSA Program entitled: The CTSA Program at NIH: Opportunities for Advancing Clinical and Translational Research.  IOM report
(Click here to read the full text of the report.)

The report's overall message is very positive and supportive of the CTSA program. The following are 7 recommendations offered by NCATS Director Christopher Austin, MD, to build on the successes of the CTSA program and realize its full potential for transforming clinical and translational science for the benefit of human health:

1) Strengthen the leadership of the CTSA program by NCATS
2) Reconfigure and streamline the CTSA Consortium
3) Build on the strengths of individual CTSAs across the spectrum of clinical and translational research
4) Formalize and standardize the evaluation processes for individual CTSAs and the CTSA program
5) Advance innovation in education and training programs
6) Ensure community engagement in all phases of research
7) Strengthen clinical and translational research relevant to child health

PCORI

After two rounds of awards under its broad National Research Priorities, PCORI is getting specific in its funding announcements. In recent weeks, PCORI signed an agreement with the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, to develop a funding opportunity on preventing fall-related injuries in older adults. They also issued a PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA) for studies of ways to address uncontrolled asthma in African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos. In addition, our Board of Governors approved our moving ahead on plans to work with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to study the effectiveness of therapies for uterine fibroids. See the details in a recent post on the PCORI Blog.

Do you know of good candidates to be reviewers of PCORI funding proposals or interested in being a reviewer yourself? July 1 is the deadline for applying to serve on one of the review panels that will meet this fall to assess applications for PCORI's August 2013 cycle of PFAs. Patients and other stakeholders join scientists in helping us ensure that the research we fund is both scientifically rigorous and truly patient-centered. Find out more here.

On July 9, PCORI will host a one-hour webinar to present results of a survey of patients and clinicians assessing their views on comparative effective research and engagement in research. Expert panelists will put the findings in context.  See more details, and register to join in.

The Improving Healthcare Systems program will convene a multi-disciplinary workgroup on July 12 to identify unanswered questions that are important to patients and other stakeholders when deciding whether to participate in transitional care programs as they move from hospital to home. The one-day meeting will be available via webinar.
