Wanted: Dead of Alive! Organ Donation: Things to Consider

Note: This is the last article in a series of four Wanted Dead or Alive articles on the issue of Organ Donation. Part 1 - An Overview; Part 2 - Essential Medical Terminology, Part 3 - Dead Enough to Donate.

It's heart wrenching enough dealing with a loved one nearing the end of their life.

The pain can be much worse when the issue of organ donation is involved.

Such situations raise a host of questions that need to be addressed.

When is it ethically appropriate to authorize organ removal?

Is the person enrolled as a donor with the state?

Do they have an advance healthcare directive?

What do family members need to know in order to make the right, biblical decision?

The first thing to understand is that the business of organ harvesting and donating is exactly that-a business.

A Twisted "Selfie"

It seems as though the world becomes more upside down every day. What is honorable is condemned and what is morally wrong is celebrated.

One columnist has warned: "What you applaud you encourage. So be careful what you celebrate."

A recent example involves a 25-year-old New Jersey abortion counselor who videoed her own abortion and posted it on YouTube.

Emily Letts later told Cosmopolitan magazine she hoped the video would present "a positive abortion story."

Letts continued: "I know that sounds weird, but to me, this was as birth-like as it could be. I remember breathing and humming through it like I was giving birth."

Converted: No Exception (by Abby Johnson)

Abby Johnson, a leading defender of the preborn, is the former director of a Planned Parenthood abortion facility. After witnessing an ultrasound-guided abortion, Abby converted to the pro-life cause. Since leaving Planned Parenthood, Abby has founded a non-profit called And Then There Were None, which specializes in reaching out to and providing men and women in the abortion industry with the spiritual, financial, and logistical help to leave the industry. Abby will be the speaker at

GRTL's September 25th REACH banquet.

I am proudly a no-exceptions pro-lifer.

But I haven't always been. Admittedly, I used to accept the rape/incest exception. My opinion began to change as I met people who had been conceived in rape and saw that their lives deserved the same protection as mine. I came to understand that how a child was conceived had no bearing on their humanity. I also began to understand and reflect on a strange irony...two of them.

When a woman is raped, the police can use the fetal tissue for DNA. When I worked for Planned Parenthood, in most rape cases we would be asked to draw two tubes of the mother's blood and collect the "products of conception" after the abortion. All of this had to be kept in a very strict "chain of custody."

Win For Religious Freedom & Life

While the ultimate impact cannot be measured at this time, it was a great day for religious freedom and the protection of innocent life.

The U.S. Supreme Court in the hotly contested Hobby Lobby case saidat least some corporations cannot be forced to go against their sincerely held beliefs to pay for employee health insurance that ends the life of an innocent preborn child.

"The sanctity of human life is grounded in the undeniable truth that we're created in the image of God," said GRTL President Dan Becker. "And I'm thankful that we're still free to stand up for our beliefs. "Becker added: "It would have been a dark day if the court had decided that corporate owners can't practice what they believe."

And despite howls from pro-aborts and the left, the 5-4 decision will have virtually no impact on women's access to birth control.

It doesn't deny women access to abortion services, or prevent them from obtaining birth control products.

In fact, the ruling only affects 4 of the 20 so-called birth control methods that employers are required to provide their female employees under Obamacare (The Affordable Care Act).
