Volume 1 Issue 4                                                                                                                  May 30, 2014
Letter from Laurie
_________________________________________________________

Dear Friend,

The past two weeks have been full of action for my office. I am working diligently with my colleagues on the New York City Council Finance Committee to finalize the city budget by the upcoming deadline of June 30th. Please make note of our upcoming events, including a SCRIE Workshop for our seniors to renew their rent exemptions and a girl empowerment initiative. I am calling on all NYCHA residents to join me at City Hall for the Fiscal Year 2015 Executive Budget Hearing scheduled for Tuesday June 3rd at 3pm to save our community and senior centers.

On Monday, we as a nation paid homage to the men and women who have valiantly sacrificed for our country, our values, and the freedoms that we often take for granted. I strive to honor the sacrifices of these men and women and live up to their examples of leadership in my own work.

I, like many others, was deeply saddened to learn of Maya Angelou's passing on Wednesday. As an African-American woman, I have looked to Dr. Angelou as a source of inspiration and gained so much from her as I was growing up. I can only hope to carry on her legacy and keep alive the change, discourse, and hope that she inspired. I will continue to work toward those goals every day in the New York City Council.

I hope that you will continue to engage with my office, exchanging ideas and solutions to improve our district, city, and state.

Yours in Partnership,

Laurie A. Cumbo

Member of the New York City Council
