This week in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin-ELCA

Week of September 14, 2014

We are a church that is energized by lively engagement in our faith and life.

"Our faith is a living, busy, active, mighty thing," said Martin Luther. We continually strive for a deeper understanding of what the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ means for the world. Doing so puts us right where God wants us to be: in the thick of life.

The synod staff will pray for these congregations and rostered leaders during their next weekly staff meeting. We invite you to include them in your prayers this week as well.

Making a difference on "God's work. Our hands." Sunday
"God's work. Our hands." Sunday was an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. On Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, many congregations gathered to serve communities in ways that shared the love of God with all of God's people. Here are a few of the photos we have received so far. If you have photos from your congregation that you would like to share, please email them to [email protected]

This September is the 100-year rededication of the Taylor County Court House in Medford. In preparation for the "100 Years Under The Dome" celebration,  members from Our Saviour's, rural Medford,  and St. Paul's, Curtiss helped assure the grounds and flower beds were beautiful and weed free. In addition to the work done by several other volunteers, on August 7 during VBS, 36 youth plus several teacher/adult volunteers were bused to Medford and worked for two hours. Afterward, the group was given a tour of the court house. The Our Saviour's "God's Work. Our Hands." volunteers were recognized for their efforts to enhance the grounds at the rededication ceremony September 6.

From Your Synod Resource Center

As we are fast approaching our time at Heartwood for Fall Ministry Retreat, please search your shelves in your office and at home, piles on the desk, your memory as to who you loaned Resource Center materials to, and bring them to the retreat. We are missing quite a number of resources - recently checked out - and some that have been out for a year or more.

We have Bibles for sale: Spark Storybook for $12; Spark NRSV Study Bible for $16; hard cover Lutheran Study Bibles for $26; soft cover Lutheran Study Bibles for $20. If you need a certain amount, email or call and we'll bring them along. Call 715-833-1153 or email [email protected]

Thanks so much! Looking forward to our time together at Heartwood.

Thrifty Theology: Continuing Education Without Crushing Costs

by Pastor Diane Norstad from Faith Lutheran, Balsam Lake

The Fifth Discipline - The Art & Practice of the Learning Organization

by Peter Senge

This is a good text for overall organizational practices.  One key component is learning that we cannot always base decisions for the future on the past, change is too plentiful for that to be productive.  Since it is sort of an overall text I found myself referring more to some sections than other.  It is definitely a usefully detailed book and in so may at times be a bit more than is needed dependent upon a person's previous expertise.

This book is available through the MORE consortium libraries.  As of my writing this it is available on Amazon for $14.66 new, $13.93 Kindle or $7.09 plus shipping used.
