Featured Farm - Darling Farm
Farm Partners Aaron, Rachel and Caitlin pictured above!

We had a wonderful time speaking with Aaron Taylor, Rachel Berg and Caitlin Taylor at Darling Farm!  Only in its third year, Darling Farm attends the weekly farmers markets at Edgewood Park, Clinton and the new Woodbridge Farmers' Market with a beautiful array of vegetables from their farm.

We were eager to learn more about Darling Farm and how they got started, so we asked them a few questions:

Tell us about yourselves and what motivated you to farm.
Aaron and Caitlin Taylor moved from New York City to New Haven in 2010 so that Caitlin could attend Architecture school at Yale. Two years later, armed with Aaron's experience as the Assistant Farm Manager at Massaro Community Farm, they moved to Woodbridge, became caretakers at the Thomas Darling House and started Darling Farm.

While at Massaro, Aaron met Rachel Berg, a New Haven native, and they soon realized how compatible they were as farmers and friends. In 2012, she attended UVM's Farmer Training Program and returned to New Haven to sign on as the third partner at Darling Farm.

We all farm for slightly different reasons, but are united by our desire to feed people, start a conversation, work with our hands and make awesome Excel spreadsheets.

What is your vision for Darling Farm?  Tell us about your first 3 years.

Another big piece of why we do this has to do with the way in which community seems to naturally coalesce around small farms. We are infinitely grateful for all the wonderful friends, family, neighbors, and customers who have supported us and helped us in innumerable ways to build this farm from the ground up over the last three years. When we look forward to the future we imagine refining our processes, growing even more of the things we love, and feeding more people a greater diversity of food. The overarching goal, however, is to continue to contribute to a vibrant community built around high quality and delicious food, productive work, and sustainable local economics. In the service of that goal, we'd love to one day expand our focus to crops that have been under-developed on many small-scale farms in the Northeast, such as grains, dried beans, and rare or endangered veggie varieties from around the world. From those ventures could perhaps one day grow a bakery, a brewery, cooking classes (because what good are delicious ingredients if people don't know what to do with them?), and who knows what else.

Today the carrots need to be weeded and there seem to be new summer squash to harvest every hour, but one of the best parts of being a farmer is getting to spend the winter months dreaming, planning, and plotting. With the continued support of the wonderful community around us, we'll be moving forward every season!
