Look Again:  Exploring Visual Literacy

 

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library has launched "Look Again," an exhibition in the Wintergarden of its Main Library. The exhibit which incorporates the Library's sculpture, Reeds, by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, incorporates the use of technology and display cases to explore the concept of visual literacy, often defined as the ability to interpret and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image. Curated by the Library's Humanities Department, Look Again is on view through November 23, 2014

 

Print Books Are Alive and Well

 

A new report from Nielson Books and Consumer reveals that print books continue to dominate consumer marketplace. Nielsen's survey, which covers the first six months of 2014, demonstrates that print book sales (hardcover and paperback) aggregated to 67% of units sold, outpacing e-books sales by a conclusive margin. 2015 Digital Media & Learning Conference

 

Session proposals are now being accepted for the 2015 Digital Media & Learning Conference which takes place June 11-13, 2015 in Los Angeles.The theme of the conference, "Equity by Design" is intended to reframe,"...the debate over equity and educational technology, moving us from access to tools toward new practices and forms of engagement, narratives, social supports, and networks." The DML conference is an annual event supported by the MacArthur Foundation and organized by the Digital Media and Learning Hub.The deadline for proposals is December 1, 2014. Find out more.

 

 

Free for All: Inside the Public Library

  

The Kickstarter fundraising campaign continues until October 27, 2014 to generate $75,000 that will support the filming of Free for All:  Inside the Public Library - a multiplatform documentary that celebrates the vital role of public libraries in vibrant communities.

Kansas City Public Library Wins Emmy

 

Kansas City Public Library has received a regional Emmy award for "Meet the Past," a show it created with local PBS affiliate station KCPT. Each episode features distinguished citizens of the past (as portrayed by local actors) interviewed by KCPL Director Crosby Kemper. The winning show featured Tom
Bass, the African-American horse trainer and rider who was the greatest horseman of his generation in gaited show horses. Watch the award-winning video.

ULC Welcomes New Team Members

 

Senior Program Manager Katherine Bates will guide the continued development of ULC's Digital Evolution initiative. Katherine brings 20 years of experience leading state and local government programs dealing with a wide array of subjects including: community and economic development, information technology, and broadband policy development.

 

Communications Coordinator Charlie Carroll comes to ULC with experience working in written and multimedia communication for community-based organizations in the non-profit sector. Before joining the ULC team, Charlie served as Senior Associate of Innovation and Outreach for the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America.
