Dear Reader,
I'm just back from four days in Denver at the American Booksellers' Association Winter Institute. We gather from all over the country to talk about books and stores and bookselling and how to do this whole thing better.
Look for some great new improvements in the weeks and months to come. And more than that, look for some amazing new books that I learned about at book talks, author receptions, and from other booksellers. I can't wait to share some of them with you!

We're starting up our painting classes at the store again! We need a minimum number of people to keep it going, so this is your chance to try something new, or renew your love of art. See below for the description and link.

Happy Reading,

Luan

AMONG THE ARRIVALS THIS WEEK

All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders $25.99
Childhood friends Patricia Delfine and Laurence Armstead didn't expect to see each other again, after parting ways under mysterious circumstances during high school. After all, the development of magical powers and the invention of a two-second time machine could hardly fail to alarm one's peers and families.
But now they're both adults, living in the hipster mecca San Francisco, and the planet is falling apart around them. Laurence is an engineering genius who's working with a group that aims to avert catastrophic breakdown through technological intervention into the changing global climate. Patricia is a graduate of Eltisley Maze, the hidden academy for the world's magically gifted, and works with a small band of other magicians to secretly repair the world's every-growing ailments. Little do they realize that something bigger than either of them, something begun years ago in their youth, is determined to bring them together--to either save the world, or plunge it into a new dark ages.

On the Edge by Rafael Chirbes $16.95  Ready for something different??
On the Edge opens with the discovery of a rotting corpse in the marshes on the outskirts of Olba, Spain-a town wracked by despair after the burst of the economic bubble, and a microcosm of a world of defeat, debt, and corruption. Stuck in this town is Esteban-his small factory bankrupt, his investments stolen by a "friend," and his unloved father, a mute invalid, entirely his personal burden. Much of the novel unfolds in Esteban's raw and tormented monologues. But other voices resound from the wreckage-soloists stepping forth from the choir-and their words, sharp as knives, crowd their terse, hypnotic monologues of ruin, prostitution, and loss.

The Illegal by Lawrence Hill $26.95  As he gave a face to an enslaved woman in The Book of Negroes, Lawrence Hill here imagines a refugee-like so many in today's headlines-compelled to leave his birth land. All Keita Ali has ever wanted to do is to run, and Zantoroland turns out the best marathoners on earth. But after his father is killed for his political views, Keita must flee to the wealthy nation of Freedom State. There he learns what it means to be an illegal alien, as the government cracks down on undocumented people. While needing to hide, he stands out after winning a race and must keep training and winning if he is to pay off his debts and ransom his kidnapped sister.Set in a fictional country bearing a striking resemblance to our own, this tension-filled novel casts its eye on race, human potential, and what it means to belong.

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro $16 An extraordinary new novel from the author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize winning The Remains of the Day. "You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay. . ." The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and war.  Now in paperback.

Start reading up now on Jeri Westerson's medieval noir mysteries. She's coming in March and you might just like her character Crispin! We have earlier novels in stock now to prep you for the new one!

Instructor has more than 40 years experience in drawing and in painting in oils and water colors.  The emphasis is on realistic rendering. Oils are the medium we use because of their versatility.  We will work in the bookstore/studio on still life and occasionally clothed figures.  With our great weather, some sessions will be outdoors for urban landscapes, and farther afield for natural settings along the bay and in nearby regional parks
