Tucked into the foothills of the Himalayas, high on a hill overlooking the River Ganga and sacred pilgrimage city of Rishikesh, is a haven and home for destitute children. Called Ramana's Garden after an Indian saint and run by a woman named Prabhavati Dwabha, whose life work is the care of abused and abandoned children, this magical home has a stellar school, organic gardens, and programs for playful healing and spiritual growth, all so important to rehabilitate the children who have been victims of tragedy. Not all the children at Ramana's Garden are orphans, but all of them are in immediate and desperate need of help and support as a result of abuse, abandonment, severe poverty, and other tragedies.

100% of the profits from this album will go towards Ramana's Garden to expand the number of children this remarkable place can reach. Many of the artists whose music is on this album have been to Ramana's Garden and chanted with the children themselves and all agree it is life-changing!

THE CHILDREN OF RAMANA'S GARDEN

Prabhavati Dwabha sent us letters from some of her children to share with you.  Every child at Ramana's Garden has a story, and every child waiting to get in is living their struggle right now.  Help us open the doors for them!

Saloni's Story

My name is Saloni Rawat. I am 16 years old. I was born in India. I came from Laxman Jhula. My father was always sick and when I was 6 years old he died. I lived with my grandmother, mother, sister, and brother in a small plastic sheet and grass tea stall.

When my mother was very sick with leprosy then she was admitted in hospital and I stayed with my grandmother and my brother and sister lived in a children's hostel. Then my grandmother died. My mother came home from the hospital but never recovered. My neighbors told my mother that there is a school name Ramana's Garden where children could live and go to school. My mother asked my uncle to please take me to that school.

He brought me to Ramana's Garden but I was worried about my mother and wanted to stay with her and take care of her so I ran away from Ramana's. I lived in the street taking care of my mother for 3 more years till finally they helped to get her into a home for Leprosy. Then I came to live in Ramana's Garden. It is a very beautiful place to live. I feel that I am getting much knowledge from staying here. I know how poor we were and that if I hadn't come here I would not have the opportunities I get at Ramana's. I am sure that I will really be able to help my mother after finishing high school. I want go to college to study computer programing so I can make a better future for myself. I also want to help poor people who do not have enough money to live and study. I will never forget this time at Ramana's where I got the opportunity to study and to be part of a big loving family.

Thank you very much!

 Lalita's Story

My name is Lalita. I am 17 years old. I am an orphaned child. Before coming to Ramana's Garden my life was not good. At 9 years old my father murdered my mother and I was living on the street and begging for food and clothes to wear. I was sick with many diseases.

I don't know about my family or where they are. One day a lady found me and took me to her house but she treated me very badly. She made me clean her house and do other things for her. I was very young and didn't know how to do these things and then she would beat me. Then I ran away from there and was back on the street.

Then a police woman found me .This woman knew about Ramana's Garden and she brought me here. She told Prabha Ji that she found me on the street and that I didn't have anywhere to go so Prabha Ji said I could live here. When I saw all the children playing I was so happy. Some of the children came to me and started talking to me. Even though I was happy I was too shy to talk to the children and didn't talk for 1 year. At first I was so happy to have food to eat that I ate as much as I could get. Finally I got used to the children and being here and began to talk to the other children. Everyone was helpful to me and I feel like it is my own home.

Prabha Ji is like a mother to me and helped me more than any real mother could have done. Everything I have and everything I have learnt is because of Prabha Ji. I would like to thank to Prabha Ji but words are not enough. I would like to come back in the future and volunteer to help with the children and to sponsor some children as well so they can have the opportunities that Prabha Ji gave to me.

Because I had been living on the streets, I had never been to school but at Ramana's I started to study. I had to start in kindergarten with the little children and it was strange for me but I was very happy to be able to finally go to school. One of the good things about starting school here is that I learned English from the beginning of my education. I also learned other things like: to dance, to make jewellery and do many other arts and crafts.

In 2011 I was kidnapped and sold into a brothel in Nepal Ganj. Prabha flew to Nepal and found me and brought me back home to Ramana's Garden. A dear friend Pankaj Brooke made an award winning video of my ordeal: https://vimeo.com/25809717

Dance is my favourite activity because it is my passion and brings me joy whenever I am dancing. I think we should all follow our hearts and do what we are passionate about. I am now teaching all the younger children from Ramana's and the village different forms of dance that they perform every week.

In the future I would like to become a dance teacher and open my own dance studio, maybe even a whole chain of dance studios, to bring the joy I feel when I dance to as many other people as I can.
