TODAY: Give Wendy's Board Chair a Call!

Disciples have worked with the National Farm Worker Ministry for over forty years to promote farm worker justice. One key farm worker led partner in our efforts has been the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW)--with their remarkably successful "Fair Food Program" that has improved rights for tens of thousands of farm workers in Florida tomato fields and elsewhere-helping them gain access to shade and water, obtain their first wage increase in 30 years, garner the right to payment for all hours worked, and win the opportunity for a harassment free work environment.

At General Assembly last summer, HUNDREDS OF DISCIPLES joined a march to encourage WENDY'S corporation to join the top fast food companies of Taco Bell, Subway, McDonalds, Burger King, and others to SIGN ON to the Fair Food Program. Wendy's participation is a request we've repeated for YEARS-- through high-level letters, calls, marches, and meetings. Our most recent letter was the one signed by nearly 200 Disciples and friends, and sent to Mr. Emil Brolick, CEO of Wendy's, following our General Assembly. You can see that letter, and sign on to it, here. Thus far, Wendy's refuses to sign.

BUT YOU CAN HELP US CHANGE THAT TODAY by joining farm worker supporters, faith leaders, and thousands of college students around the country for a CALL-IN-DAY to the office of Wendy's Board Chair, Nelson Peltz!! Mr. Peltz is also the CEO of Trian Partners investment firm, which is the restaurant's largest shareholder, and owns nearly a quarter of Wendy's shares.

TODAY, please call to ASK WENDY'S TO SIGN ON TO THE FAIR FOOD PROGRAM!! Here's the number and a sample script: 212-451-3000
(Note: We recommend you try calling without a 1 in front of the number as well as with a 1 in front of the number. If you continue to only receive a busy signal, please let us know as you send your email report as indicated below the script.)

Hi, my name is _______________, and I would like to leave a message for Nelson Peltz:
As a partner with the National Farm Worker Ministry and an ally with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, I want to request that Mr. Peltz support farm worker human rights in Wendy's supply chain by ensuring Wendy's JOIN THE FAIR FOOD PROGRAM.

As a Disciples of Christ member, leaders in my denomination of well over 600,000 has asked, and marched to, and written letters to the Wendy's company again and again with this request. Our ask is rooted in our faith values for fair wages and lack of workplace discrimination of all workers, including farm workers. These are commitments we have held to for many decades, and which witness to the call of the prophet Isaiah to "correct oppression" (Isaiah 1:17).

Please, Mr. Peltz, SIGN ON WENDY'S TO THE FAIR FOOD PROGRAM. It is the right thing to do-and we will be joining with partners in ongoing support for farm workers on March 3rd, when the "March on the Workers' Voice Tour" will be visiting your New York office directly to communicate again our hope and prayer for Wendy's to SIGN ON. Thanks so much for passing forward this message!

THEN, after calling, PLEASE SEND A QUICK EMAIL REPORT TO:
organize@sfalliance.org , and a copy to our Disciples Refugee & Immigration Ministries office at: sstanley@dhm.disciples.org
