TOURISM TEAM TO VISIT,

AID TIFTON TOURISM PLANS

A state tourism resource team is visiting Tifton and Tift County next week to assess tourism opportunities and to make recommendations for capitalizing on them.

The team will be touring around town Aug. 12, 13 and 14. On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, Aug. 12-13, the team will visit local sites and talk with locals. If you have a site recommendation that should be visited, call 229-386-0216.

Bruce Green, former Tifton Main Street manager and now resource development director of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, coordinates a 10-member review team that visits locations and reports to local leaders on the potential for development and a strategy to increase tourism dollars and jobs.

The team has visited 17 towns in Georgia and many of the team's recommendations have been adopted.

Two years ago, the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce requested that the Tourism Division of the Department of Economic Development visit Tifton to review the local tourism industry and evaluate programs, products and projects.

Local leaders will meet informally with the team Tuesday evening to tell stories about Tifton's history and cite possible tourism stops.

The team will continue tours and interviews with locals on Wednesday. The Tourism Resource Team will make a final presentation to the community later this year regarding Tifton's future opportunities in tourism.

FIREBIRDS HOST

LUPUS AWARENESS BOWL GAME

The Georgia Firebirds semi-pro football team based in Tifton is once again hosting a Lupus Awareness Bowl at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Brodie Field.

The Firebirds will play the Georgia Crush of Macon.

South Georgia survivors of the disease will be recognized during the game's halftime.

Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough will toss the coin at the game; Christie Evers will lead the prayer; and Stanley Flanders, student at Eighth Street Middle School, will perform during halftime.

Lupus, an autoimmune disease, affects approximately 2 million people in the United States.

SIGN IS PULLIN' NO PUNCHES IN POULAN

There is no mistaking the intent of a new sign just outside the city of Poulan.

A Worth County man says he is just calling attention to the fact that Poulan is a speed trap.

"This sign goes out to all the poor folks that had to pay when they really didn't or shouldn't have to pay," Maylon Benson, who placed the sign on his property, told WALB-TV.

Meanwhile, Poulan police claim that their town is not a speed trap and that drivers will have no trouble if they obey traffic laws.

'STUFF THE BUS' AGAIN A SUCCESS

The 4th Annual Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive to gather school supplies for local needy children ended this week outside Publix Supermarket.

Residents and families at Southern Care Assisted Living in Tifton gathered school supplies to 'Stuff the Bus' for needy children. Representing Southern Care are resident Martha Harper, left, and Administrator Frank Sayles Jr., right. At center is Greg Millette, United Way executive director.

"While we didn't completely stuff the bus, your generous donations did manage to stuff all of the seats and cover a good portion of the floorboards," says Greg Millette, executive director of the United Way of South Central Georgia.

"These supplies have been delivered to Tift County Public Schools social workers, who will distribute them through the school year as they see needs among the student population. The school social workers are in the best position to see and assess these needs, and we appreciate our great partnership with them around this and other events."

The United Way says that school supplies may still be donated for a limited time by adding dollars to your bill at Publix checkout or any time by dropping them off at the United Way building at 211 4th St. W. in Tifton.

ABAC'S 'WELCOME WEEK' BEGINS

Incoming freshmen get their first taste at college life on Saturday, Aug. 9, with the start of the annual Welcome Week festivities at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Welcome Week, in its eighth year, introduces new students to the college through a number of activities and experiences leading to the start of fall semester Aug. 13.

First-Year Move-In begins 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday. The ABAC pool will be open 1-6 p.m. for students to cool off after the move. The day's events will culminate with a No-booze-a-palooza at Lakeside Lobby from 8-10 p.m. The event will include a music provided by a DJ, a mechanical bull, frozen mocktails, airbrushed tattoos, and spin-art Frisbee.

On Aug. 10, students will converge in Gressette Gym for the Welcome Rally, the official start of Welcome Week. After the rally, students can hear about "College Life from a Student Point of View" from 2-4 p.m. in Gressette Gym. At night, the Georgia 3 Band will perform from 8-10 p.m. on the Lakeside Lawn.

"Get to Know Your Campus and Community," an informative session followed by tours of the campus and Tifton, is 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 11 in Howard Auditorium. Lake Baldwin will be the setting for the Cardboard Boat Races from 2-3 p.m. At 8 p.m., students will be mesmerized by hypnotist Dr. William Mitchell in Howard Auditorium.

On Aug. 12, students can cool off at the ABAC pool from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. For another way to beat the heat, Inflatables in the Meadows will be 3-5 p.m. featuring the Roaring River Waterslide, Water Tag and more. At 8:30 p.m., there's a "Movie on the Lawn" on Lakeside Lawn.
