2014 NW Region Conference: Food for Thought and the Soul
Jeremy Jeffers, CSI Idaho

For dessert, I will have the chocolate delight with a gin and tonic - the food of conferences.  Okay, not all will agree with this, but I figured it is in the same realm as Colonel Potter's "Fig Newtons and scotch" from the M*A*S*H* series.  It is a mixture that is wonderful for the senses and soul.  I cannot think of a better description of the CSI Northwest Region 2014 Conference.

I have mentioned in the past that I look forward to this event every year, both to see old friends and colleagues and to make a few more along the way.  This was the case again this year, and it was wonderful to see and visit with everyone.  Sadly, a few friends were not able to attend this year.  The cycle of life can leave us empty sometimes, and to those of you who were in this category - you were surely missed.  At one time, CSI was described to me as the original professional social network on steroids.  That description certainly fits.  It is wonderful to have so many connections to call upon to solve challenges.  I am fortunate to be able to associate with you all.

The programs offered and those that I attended were all interesting and thought provoking.   From "Bridging From the Past", at the conference opening, to the dinner and entertainment Saturday night, to the farewells in the hotel lobby on Sunday, Northwest Region Conference 2014 was an outstanding experience.

From a participant standpoint, the conference was an invigorating two days. My sincere gratitude goes to the conference committee for putting this conference together.  I am all too familiar with what it takes to create an event like this.  Attendees never know nor fully appreciate all that happens behind the scenes at such an event.  Kudos to the Portland Chapter and to the Conference Committee - it was a conference well done! I think it is time for dessert.

It Takes a Village
Erica Bitterman-Ryon, CSI, NWRC Chair

I hope you all had a good time at the CSI NW Region Conference hosted by the Portland Chapter of CSI.  A lot of work went into the event, the committee started back in the end of 2013 and worked our way through the details to give everyone, hopefully a wonderful, educational and fun conference.

Conferences cannot happen though without a team of CSI "Krakens" to step forward, take charge and get those details worked out.  As committee chair, I was blessed with a group of strong leaders that knew what needed to be done to make this a success and ran with the ball when handed off to them.  With planning any event this size there things that go sideways, cannot be avoided, but it is how you deal with them and how the team steps forwards and over comes those obstacles.   As team of CSI Leaders we can accomplish anything. CSI Education Abounds

May was a banner month for the Portland CSI Chapter filled with education.  I was thrilled to attend my very first NW Region Conference and honored to introduce speakers and teach a class on Architect/Engineer Coordination.  It was great to finally meet some CSI Members that I had only previously interacted with via Social Media and catch up with Region members I don't see very often.  We kicked it all off with an amazing Industry Forum that we tweeted to members across the country.  I was mesmerized by Craig Dykers of Snohetta!

i-Joy Davis

In addition, we were graced with the presence and infinite wisdom of Joy Davis from Institute as a lunchtime keynote as well as instructor of our Trusted Advisor Class for product reps and class on leadership.  Joy is the online community and voice of CSI.  I could sit in on Joy's presentations all day, every day and never get bored.  I am thankful for her time and efforts to help make this such a great event.

NAWIC Professional Development Expo

Also in May, I joined Ali Clark and Linda Joens at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Professional Development Expo at McMenamins Edgefield to provide information about CSI to their members.  The Portland Chapter is motivated to partner with other industry organizations to provide a broader depth of education and opportunities to our members.  Watch for more partner events in the future.

Education 2014/2015

The Education Committee is busy planning for the upcoming year.  We will begin the next phase of our class/lecture series in the Fall to be kicked off with a Mock Bid Day Event.  We have some really exciting things planned for the next year with some incredible speakers/teachers already on board.  Keep an eye out here for details coming soon.

Farewell but not goodbye

This will be my last write up as Education Committee Chair for the Portland Chapter.  Beginning July 1st, I will be stepping into my new roles as the Portland Chapter President and as the Chair of the Institute Education Committee.  I remain committed to education and will continue as a member of the Portland Chapter CSI Education Committee.  I am confident the new Chair will continue to help take Portland CSI and our education goals to the next level. Thank you all for your support and commitment during the last year.  I am excited to serve you all in my new capacity this next year.

Kathy Hempel, CSI, CCCA, Certification Chair

Our CDT classes for spring of 2014 are complete and we have another new Construction Documents Technologists for the greater Portland area!! Congratulations to Kate Camp, Project Team Coordinator at Interface Engineering, for getting her CDT certificate.

The CDT exam (Construction Documents Technologist) Educations Program teaches a thorough overview of the design and construction process.  It promotes an understanding of contractual agreements, roles, responsibilities, drawings and specifications, and construction delivery systems and how to consistently develop organized, effective construction documents.

New Kraken Recruits

In addition to awesome education and great feedback from our May event attendees, Portland CSI was able to add a few more CSI Krakens to the roster in the process!  What's a CSI Kraken you ask?  Read my latest blog The Voices in my Head "Becoming a Kraken! The Challenge" here to find out. Our movement is spreading across the country and inspiring other CSI Members to take it to the next level.  Feel free to join us. READ BLOG HERE >

Gratitude!

I would like to take just a short moment each month to highlight a few of our amazing volunteers who bring you such rich and varied programs, events and education.

I am not sure how many times we can say it but our Industry Forum and NWRC Committees knocked it out of the park, AGAIN, this year.  I am so grateful and inspired each and every day by the amazing people we have in the Portland Chapter and the effort that they will expend to create top notch education and events for our members.  Thank you on behalf of every Portland and NW Region Member for your hard work.

If you are a CSI Member who has not attended in a while, I urge you to come by and say hello.  Portland CSI is kicking it up a notch and there are great things to come.  Join us.

September 9-12, Baltimore, MD

Information is becoming available on this year's CONSTRUCT conference, and educational sessions are posted.

We have been informed that CONSTRUCT coincides with the 200th birthday celebration of the Maryland War of 1812. If you have not yet attended CONSTRUCT, this would be an incredible year to start. Due to area events, I strongly suggest that you book your hotel early.

I will be attending my third CONSTRUCT in Baltimore, and I can say with full conviction that it is the highlight of my year.  There is more education, events and fun packed into one week than I thought possible. Don't miss it! LEARN MORE >
