Cassy's Story

I first tried to quit smoking when I was 19, but I didn't have much success because I was too stressed out at the time. I had been cutting back little by little before my pregnancy, but when I found out that I was having a baby I decided to quit for good. My family smokes, so it was challenging not to be able to smoke with them. Luckily, I got up the courage to ask them not to smoke around me, and that made quitting much easier.

First Breath is such a great program. It was so helpful to have someone to help me stay quit, and to be able to talk to other people in my position. The pamphlets helped me remember that staying quit leads to a healthy baby! Since I've quit smoking, I have more money to spend on my child, instead of spending all of my money on cigarettes. Other moms trying to quit should just do it! It's safer for your child in the long run.

Positive Psychology
She avoids eye contact by looking at her hands, shifting uncomfortably in her seat while she explains how she can't quit smoking. She's tried everything; it just doesn't work for her. She really wants to, but she just doesn't see how it's possible. She has smoked for years. She doesn't like it, but it's just part of who she is now.

What can we do for our participants who have resigned themselves to being smokers or drinkers, even though they don't want to?

Positive psychology is a field which focuses on promoting and supporting positive emotions and strengths, as opposed to dwelling on negativity and flaws. The overall model compliments the non-judgmental, client-centered approach which First Breath and My Baby & Me are based on.
