Tim Dorsey Book Tour
Best-selling author Tim Dorsey is including three of our libraries on his Tiger Shrimp Tango book tour! He'll be at these locations to sign and sell books and other Serge-related items.
Panama City Beach Public Library September 29th @ 2 PM CDT
Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Library in Port St. Joe September 30th @ 4:30 PM EDT Bay County Public Library September 30th @ 6:30 PM CDT
The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.
Tiger Shrimp Tango description from the publisher: Determined to save a damsel in distress, the Sunshine State's favorite serial killer and encyclopedia of Florida lore Serge Storms dances a tango of death and mayhem in this funny and dementedly entertaining crime caper from Tim Dorsey, author of the New York Times bestseller The Riptide, Ultra-Glide. Thanks to the Internet, America has become a playground for ruthless scam artists out to make an easy buck. And where do these models of entrepreneurship hail from? Why, the Sunshine State of course!
No one loves Florida more, or can keep it safe from invasive criminal species better than self-appointed Sunshine Sheriff Serge Storms. When a particular scam leads to the death of a few innocents and a young woman's disappearance, Serge and his perpetually self-bent sidekick Coleman--aided by his new pal, latter-day noir private eye Mahoney--load up the car for a riotous road trip to do right. Packed with seafood, mayhem, blood, Coleman's deep thoughts, Floridian lore, and more, Tiger Shrimp Tango is a hilarious treat from the incomparable Tim Dorsey.
Tim Dorsey was a reporter and editor for the Tampa Tribune from 1987 to 1999, and is the author of seventeen novels: Tiger Shrimp Tango, The Riptide Ultra-Glide, Pineapple Grenade, When Elves Attack, Electric Barracuda, Gator A-Go-Go, Nuclear Jellyfish, Atomic Lobster, Hurricane Punch, The Big Bamboo, Torpedo Juice, Cadillac Beach, The Stingray Shuffle, Triggerfish Twist, Orange Crush, Hammerhead Ranch Motel, and Florida Roadkill. He lives in Tampa, Florida.

Anita Lucas Retires from the Bay County Public Library Anita Lucas recently retired from the Bay County Public Library. Anita began working with the library after graduating from high school in 1960. In her first six years, Anita (along with other staff) drove the bookmobile, and once a month, showed films with an old projector for the children around the Fountain area.
During her career, Anita worked in the Circulation Department, was Head of the Technical Services Department, and has spent the last several years working in the Local History Room.
| Bay County Commissioner George Gainer recognizes Anita Lucas for her hard work and dedication to the Bay County Public Library. |
Anita's dedication and commitment over the years has earned the respect of her co-workers and many members of the community. She was involved in the creation of the Northwest Regional Library System, and has been instrumental in recording the library's history, especially the construction of the current library building, and in helping thousands of community members document and research their family's history and the county's history.
We will miss you, Anita!

Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community - librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types - in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.
Stop by your local branch from September 21-27, 2014 to see displays of Banned Books.

Prior to this, she worked in public libraries for eight years, most recently as a reference librarian for the Northwest Regional Library System at the Bay County Public Library. She completed a Bachelor's of Art in Anthropology/Archaeology with History and Art History minors at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and she received her Master's in Library and Information Science specializing in Archival Studies at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. She has conducted various projects, including working at the Ocmulgee National Monument as a facilitator in a NAGPRA Consultation Hearing, working with Dr. Bob Brier at Macon's Museum of Arts and Sciences, and assisting the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah, Georgia. She has served as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, with the U.S. Army's Family Readiness Group as a Point of Contact, and has enjoyed singing in various choirs and, in years past, playing clarinet. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, researching her family history, drinking coffee, and dancing through life with her daughter, Hayley, and husband of five years, Dustin. Lorrie Canfijn is the new Local History Archivist. She grew up in Glastonbury, Connecticut as the middle child of five children. She married in 1980, and worked for several years for the Connecticut National Guard in their finance and accounting office. She relocated several times due to her husband's work, and has also lived in Atlanta and Houston for a while. She finally settled here in Panama City fifteen years ago, after being a frequent visitor to the area before that. Her career at the Bay County Public Library began in January 2004 in the Circulation Department. She has one child who is presently a senior at the University of Florida.
