<AUDIO><VIDEO>

*IAMBIC PENTAMETER*

We ask for rest today, and quietness

unshaken by the world's appearances.

We ask for peace and stillness in the midst

of all the turmoil born of clashing dreams.

We ask for safety and for happiness,

although we seem to look on danger and

on sorrow. And we have the thought that will
answer our asking with what we request.|

"I rest in God." This thought will bring to you

the rest and quiet, peace and stillness, and

the safety and the happiness you seek.

"I rest in God." This thought has power to wake

the sleeping truth in you, whose vision sees

beyond appearances to that same truth

in everyone and everything there is.

Here is the end of suffering for all

the world, and everyone who ever came

and yet will come to linger for a while.

Here is the thought in which the Son of God

is born again, to recognize Himself.|

"I rest in God." Completely undismayed

this thought will carry you through storms and strife,

past misery and pain, past loss and death,

and onward to the certainty of God.

There is no suffering it cannot heal.

There is no problem [which] it cannot solve.

And no appearance but will turn to truth

before the eyes of you who rest in God.|

This is the day of peace. You rest in God,

and while the world is torn by winds of hate,

your rest remains completely undisturbed.

Yours is the rest of truth. Appearances

cannot intrude on you. You call to all

to join you in your rest, and they will hear

and come to you because you rest in God.

They will not hear another voice [but] yours

because you gave your voice to God and now

you rest in Him, and let Him speak through you.|

In Him you have no cares and no concerns,

no burdens, no anxiety, no pain,

no fear of future and no past regrets.

In timelessness you rest, while time goes by

without its touch upon you, for your rest

can never change in any way at all.

You rest today. And as you close your eyes,

sink into stillness. Let these periods

of rest and respite reassure your mind

that all its frantic fantasies were but

the dreams of fever that has passed away.

Let it be still and thankfully accept

its healing. No more fearful dreams will come

now that you rest in God. Take time today

to slip away from dreams and into peace.|

Each hour that you take your rest today

a tired mind is suddenly made glad,

a bird with broken wings begins to sing,

a stream long dry begins to flow again.

The world is born again each time you rest,

and hourly remember that you came

to bring the peace of God into the world

that it might take its rest along with you.|

With each five minutes that you rest today

the world is nearer waking. And the time

when rest will be the only thing there is

comes closer to all worn and tired minds,

too weary now to go their way alone.

And they will hear the bird begin to sing,

and see the stream begin to flow again,

with hope reborn and energy restored

to walk with lightened steps along the road

that suddenly seems easy as they go.|

[We] rest within the peace of God today,

and call upon [our] brothers from [our] rest,

to draw them to their rest along with you.

You will be faithful to your trust today,

forgetting no-one, bringing everyone

into the boundless circle of your peace,

the holy sanctuary where you rest.

Open the temple doors and let them come

from far across the world and near as well;

your distant brothers and your closest friends;

bid them all enter here and rest with you.|

You rest [today] within the peace of God,

quiet and unafraid. Each brother comes

to take his rest and offer it to you.

#We rest together here, for thus our rest

is made complete, and what we give today

we have received already. Time is not

the guardian of what we give today.

We give to those unborn and those past by,

to every Thought of God, and to the Mind

in Which these Thoughts were born, and where they rest.

And we remind them of their resting place

each time we tell ourselves:

"I rest in God."

Sarah's Commentary:

This lesson is such a favorite meditation lesson of mine and brings such peace as I breathe into the experience of just resting in God. Certainly in this world we do experience "turmoil born of clashing dreams." (1.2) When we can step back from the challenges, problems and conflicts of our lives and release our attachment to how things should be for us in this dream, in order for us to feel at peace, then we can sink into the place of complete rest with no dismay about anything in this illusory world. This place of rest in us is a sanctuary, Jesus tells us, where we invite our brothers to rest with us and join with us as we release the turmoil of our clashing dreams so that we can open to the healing that is always poised in readiness when we are willing to accept it. And when we do, then the peace in our minds extends to all minds. We take this temporary withdrawal from the world, in our meditation time, so that when we reenter the world, we bring the peace that is in our minds to every person and every situation that we encounter. It is a way of living in the world while not getting caught up in the conflicts of this world.

The rest that we take as we withdraw from the world is an alert kind of meditation. It is not a withdrawal into drowsiness. What we do is to bring our distracting thoughts and any interference to the quiet of our minds so that we can truly rest in God. Our focus in meditating on the lessons is on awakening rather than withdrawing. The purpose is not to escape from the world, but to bring this peaceful focus into our everyday lives because it is the everyday events of our lives that trigger reactions that can tempt us to respond with anger. Now we have an opportunity to take any distress into this quiet place of rest so that our distressing thoughts can be brought for healing.

There are so many things in our lives that seem to need our attention. In the midst of all of this seeming fear, guilt and pain, where we "seem to look on danger and on sorrow," (1.3) the Holy Spirit gently brings our attention to the reality that there is a place in our minds where peace, happiness and safety abide. It is here that we learn to see past appearances because we have an opportunity to choose again and in this choice we are born again. To be born again is to die to the ego. With the choice for the ego came the choice for death. Now we can choose life, which has no end, but speaks to our eternal nature. It requires that we see the illusion for what it is. When we look beyond appearances we look beyond what the body's eyes show us to be true. We recognize that we are deceived in what we see. It is all illusory. Our reality, and that of every brother, is one of perfect stillness and peace, which is the only reality. Behind all form in this world is the content of love.

But isn't this selfish, to take this kind of time for ourselves when there seems to be so much to be attended to? Isn't it self indulgent to take this kind of rest? It does seem so, and I know for me sometimes taking time to do the meditations for the day seems to be taking me away from what I think I have to be busy doing. The ego is the voice in our minds that makes these kinds of demands of us and says we should feel guilty if we are taking time for stillness. Yet here Jesus is telling us that we are doing immense good for the world and for all those who suffer and experience lack of hope. This rest that he is talking to us about is the "rest of truth." (4.3) Here there are no "cares and no concerns, no burdens, no anxiety and no pain, no fear of future and no past regrets." (5.1) We increasingly recognize, through our practice, that nothing in the world can affect the love and the peace within.

Taking time for rest may be unproductive from the perspective of the world, but it has powerful implications here. To think that this thought alone can carry us through "storms and strife, past misery and pain, past loss and death, and onward to the certainty of God," (3.2) is so very powerful. But even more, the peace that comes from our rest in God has the power to solve every problem and address every concern, anxiety, pain, fear and regret. "There is no suffering it cannot heal. There is no problem that it cannot solve. And no appearance but will turn to truth before the eyes of you who rest in God." (3.3-5)

When there are difficulties and problems in my life, I always feel like I have to get into action and do something. Yet Jesus proposes that we stop the doing and rest in God so that the peace that is always in the mind can be brought to the issues of the day. And this is where the miracle is given birth. When I stop the activity and go into this quiet place of rest, the answer comes. So yes, this serves me, but it also serves those who came and are yet to come because there is no linear time. The love that we bring forth from the holy instant is timeless. We become a conduit of this love. Clearly it is not about denial of the problems we face, or that we see in the world, but when we look at them with the Holy Spirit---with the light of His truth---we are seeing everything differently. Again it does not mean that we don't see the world's problems, and we don't deny their effect on us, but we bring our misperceptions to truth so that we can truly look beyond what things appear to be. Now our minds can rest on a foundation of God's Love rather than the ego's interpretations of everything.

Peace is our natural state. It is not something to seek. It is something to uncover and discover in ourselves. Frenzy, on the other hand, is unnatural. In Chapter 29.V. "The Changeless Dwelling Place," we are reminded of this place in us where we find our rest. "There is a place in you where this whole world has been forgotten; where no memory of sin and of illusion lingers till. There is a place in you which time has left, and echoes of eternity are heard. There is a resting place so still no sound except a hymn to Heaven rises up to gladden God the Father and the Son. Where Both abide are they remembered Both. And where They are is Heaven and is peace." (T.29.V.1.1-4)

No matter what stories we have made up in this dream, or how we experience ourselves, we can't change what God created. We are still a thought of Love in the Mind of Love. In the unhealed places in my mind, I feel the wounds that show up for healing. While they don't feel good, when I see them as welcome opportunities to release the grievances and remember the truth, then they assist me in the healing of my misperceptions of myself and everyone else. There is nothing to do or fix. All we need to do is bring our awareness to the blocks to love and welcome in the truth that is in our minds.

It reminds me of the section in Chapter 18.VII where Jesus talks of our busy doings while our minds are at peace. It is a way of living in this world where we attend to what is in front of us to do, but all the time we carry the peace, love and joy that we are into every circumstance. That is the goal of this course. Jesus reminds us: "yet there will always be this place of rest to which you can return. And you will be more aware of this quiet center of the storm than all its raging activity. This quiet center, in which you do nothing, will remain with you, giving you rest in the midst of every busy doing on which you are sent. For from this center will you be directed how to use the body sinlessly". (T.18.VII.8.1-4)

Now we call to all of our brothers to rest with us. "You rest within the peace of God today and call upon your brothers from your rest to draw them to their rest along with you." (8.1) Our sacred mission, and our reason for being here, is to bring peace to everyone. We were born for this purpose. Our peace can then extend from us to all the world because there is just one mind. And what we give we receive. The peace we offer is the peace that we receive, as we offer it. By the same token, when we attack, we are hurting ourselves. So as we rest, we draw in our brothers because this rest embraces all brothers as one Son of God. This experience is sacred. Jesus tells us that we enter a "holy sanctuary" (8.2) and "open the temple doors." (8.3) It is how we might approach this holy time of resting in God.

It is our desire at the center of our minds that will bring us home. It is this desire for our true home where we are resting in God. We are reminded of this place in us where we yearn to know the Self that we are. "It is this Child in you your Father knows as His Own Son. It is this Child Who knows His Father. He desires to go home so deeply, so unceasingly, His voice cries unto you to let Him rest a while. He does not ask for more than just a few instants of respite; just an interval in which He can return to breathe again the holy air that fills His father's house. You are His home as well. He will return. But give Him just a little time to be Himself, within the peace that is His home, resting in silence and in peace and love." (W.PI.182.5)

I feel this so poignantly today. The Child is crying out for rest. So it is a deep rest of the mind that we are crying out for where there are no cares, no concerns, no anxiety, no pain, no fear of the future and in fact no time. In this state of timelessness is where we can know the truth, feel totally safe, yet not alone. We can know this state when we know we are everything and have everything. And everything swirling outside of this sanctuary, no matter the appearances, is not real.

"This thought will bring to you the rest and quiet, peace and stillness, and the safety and the happiness you seek." (2.2) But it also "has power to wake the sleeping truth in everyone and everything there is." (2.4) This thought seems to put us back on track, reminding us of God's peace and power in our lives and how that awareness within us helps all minds. They will accept this peace as they are ready. "Each hour that you take your rest today, a tired mind is suddenly made glad, a bird with broken wings beings to sing, a stream long dry begins to flow again. The world is born again each time you rest, and remember that you came to bring the peace of God into the world, that it might take its rest along with you." (6.1-2) These are beautiful symbols of the power that there is in the quiet center of our minds.

It is important today in our quiet to bring our pain, anxiety, depression, sadness, frantic fantasies and fearful thoughts to the invitation to rest. If we truly desire a quiet mind we must release the thoughts that bring suffering. Without forgiveness, the beauty of the words of this lesson won't truly serve you. We really are meant to use these thoughts to remind us that peace is available to us in every moment. We suffer because we hold onto thoughts that are not true, that we give meaning to. Use this time today to bring them to His loving presence and know that you are safe. It is a sacred experience you are engaging in. It is about letting grievances go and entering into the temple of your mind where peace abides.

For the longer practice period of five minutes on the hour: Say: "I rest in God." Repeat these words slowly to yourself right now. Don't you feel more at peace? The words "I rest in God" put us in a state of willingness and receptivity. Now sink into the kind of rest where there are no cares and no concerns and the turmoil of the world can't touch you. In this state, call to "your distant brothers and your closest friends" (8.3) and welcome them into your holy temple where you rest in God.

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Nine

The Correction of Error

IX. The Decision to Forget

68 Unless you know something, you cannot dissociate it. Knowledge therefore precedes dissociation, and dissociation is nothing more than a decision to forget. What has been forgotten then appears to be fearful, but only because the dissociation was an attack on truth. You are fearful because you have forgotten. And you have replaced your knowledge by an awareness of dreams because you are afraid of your dissociation, not of what you have dissociated. Even in this world's therapy, when dissociated material is accepted,it ceases to be fearful, for the laws of mind always hold.

69 Yet to give up the dissociation of reality brings more than merely lack of fear. In this decision lie joy and peace and the glory of creation. Offer the Holy Spirit only your will to remember, for He retains the knowledge of God and of yourself for you, waiting for your acceptance. Give up gladly everything that would stand in the way of your remembering, for God is in your memory, and His Voice will tell you that you are part of Him when you are willing to remember Him and know your own reality again. Let nothing in this world delay your remembering of Him, for in this remembering is the knowledge of yourself.

70 To remember is merely to restore to your mind what is already there. You do not make what you remember; you merely accept again what has been made but was rejected. The ability to accept truth in this world is the perceptual counterpart of creating in the Kingdom. God will do His part if you will do yours, and His return in exchange for yours is the exchange of knowledge for perception. Nothing is beyond His Will for you. But signify your will to remember Him and behold! He will give you everything but for the asking.

71 When you attack, you are denying yourself. You are specifically teaching yourself that you are not what you are. Your denial of reality precludes the acceptance of God's gift because you have accepted something else in its place. If you understand that the misuse of defenses always constitutes an attack on truth and truth is God, you will realize why this is always fearful. If you further recognize that you are part of God, you will understand why it is that you always attack yourself first.

72 [All attack is self-attack. It cannot be anything else. Arising from your own decision not to be what you are, it is an attack on your identification. Attack is thus the way in which your identification is lost because, when you attack, you must have forgotten what you are. And if your reality is God's, when you attack you are not remembering Him. This is not because He is gone, but because you are willing actively not to
remember Him
.]3

73 If you realized the complete havoc this makes of your peace of mind, you could not make such an insane decision. You make it only because you still believe that it can get you something you want. It follows, then, that you want something other than peace of mind, but you have not considered what it must be. Yet the logical outcome of your decision is perfectly clear if you will look at it. By deciding against your reality, you have made yourself vigilant against God and His Kingdom. And it is this vigilance that makes you afraid to remember Him.

74 You have not attacked God, and you do love Him. Can you change your reality? No one can will to destroy himself. When you think you are attacking your self, it is a sure sign that you hate what you think you are. And this, and only this, can be attacked by you. What you think you are can be hateful, and what this strange image makes you do can be very destructive. Yet the destruction is no more real than the image, although those who make idols do worship them. The idols are nothing, but their worshipers are the Sons of God in sickness.

75 God would have them released from their sickness and returned to His Mind. He will not limit your power to help them because He has given it to you. Do not be afraid of it because it is your salvation. What Comforter can there be for the sick Children of God except His power through you? Remember that it does not matter where in the Sonship He is accepted. He is always accepted for all, and when your mind receives Him, the remembrance of Him awakens throughout the Sonship. Heal your brothers simply by accepting God for them.

76 Your minds are not separate, and God has only one channel for healing because He has but one Son. His remaining communication link with all His Children joins them together and them to Him. To be aware of this is to heal them because it is the awareness that no one is separate, and so no one is sick. To believe that a Son of God can be sick is to believe that part of God can suffer. Love cannot suffer because it cannot attack. The remembrance of love therefore brings invulnerability with it.

77 Do not side with sickness in the presence of a Son of God even if he believes in it, for your acceptance of God in him acknowledges the love of God which he has forgotten. Your recognition of him as part of God teaches him the truth about himself, which he is denying. Would you strengthen his denial of God and thus lose sight of yourself? Or would you remind him of his wholeness and remember your Creator with him? To believe a Son of God is sick is to worship the same idol he does. God created love, not idolatry. All forms of idolatry are caricatures of creation, taught by sick minds which are too divided to know that creation shares power and never usurps it. Sickness is idolatry because it is the belief that power can be taken from you. Yet this is impossible because you are part of God, Who is all power.

78 A sick god must be an idol, made in the image of what its maker thinks he is. And that is exactly what the ego does perceive in a Son of God; a sick god, self-created, self-sufficient, very vicious, and very vulnerable. Is this the idol you would worship? Is this the image you would be vigilant to save? [Are you really afraid of losing this?] Look calmly at the logical conclusion of the ego's thought system and judge whether its offering is really what you want, for this is what it offers you. To obtain this you are willing to attack the divinity of your brothers and thus lose sight of yours. And you are willing to keep it hidden and to protect this idol, which you think will save you from the dangers which the idol itself stands for, but which do not exist.

79 There are no idolaters in the Kingdom, but there is great appreciation for every Soul which God created because of the calm knowledge that each one is part of Him. God's Son knows no idols, but he does know his Father. Health in this world is the counterpart of value in Heaven. It is not my merit that I contribute to you but my love, for you do not value yourselves. When you do not value yourself, you become sick, but my value of you can heal you because the value of God's Son is one. When I said, "My peace I give unto you," I meant it. Peace came from God through me to you. It was for you, although you did not ask.

80 When a brother is sick, it is because he is not asking for peace and therefore does not know he has it. The acceptance of peace is the denial of illusion, and sickness is an illusion. Yet every Son of God has the power to deny illusions anywhere in the Kingdom merely by denying them completely in himself. I can heal you because I know you. I know your value for you, and it is this value that makes you whole. A whole mind is not idolatrous and does not know of conflicting laws. I will heal you merely because I have only one message, and it is true. Your faith in it will make you whole when you have faith in me.

81 I do not bring God's message with deception, and you will learn this as you learn that you always receive as much as you accept. You could accept peace now for everyone you meet and offer them perfect freedom from all illusions because you heard. But have no other gods before Him, or you will not hear. God is not jealous of the gods you make, but you are. You would save them and serve them because you believe that they made you. You think they are your father because you are projecting onto them the fearful fact that you made them to replace God. Yet when they seem to speak to you, remember that nothing can replace God, and whatever replacements you have attempted are nothing.

82 Very simply, then, you may believe you are afraid of nothingness, but you are really afraid of nothing. And in that awareness you are healed. You will hear the god you listen to. You made the god of sickness, and by making him, you made yourself able to hear him. Yet you did not create him because he is not the Will of the Father. He is therefore not eternal and will be unmade for you the instant you signify your willingness to accept only the eternal. If God has but one Son, there is but one God. You share reality with Him because reality is not divided. To accept other gods before Him is to place other images before yourself.

83 You do not realize how much you listen to your gods and how vigilant you are on their behalf. Yet they exist only because you honor them. Place honor where it is due, and peace will be yours. It is your inheritance from your real Father. You cannot make your father, and the father you made did not make you. Honor is not due to illusions, for to honor them is to honor nothing. Yet fear is not due them either, for nothing cannot be fearful. You have chosen to fear love because of its perfect harmlessness, and because of this fear, you have been willing to give up your own perfect helpfulness and your own perfect Help.

84 Only at the altar of God will you find peace. And this altar is in you because God put it there. His Voice still calls you to return, and He will be heard when you place no other gods before Him. You can give up the god of sickness for your brothers; in fact, you would have to do so if you give him up for yourself. For if you see him anywhere, you have accepted him. And if you accept him, you will bow down and worship him because he was made as God's replacement. He is the belief that you can choose which god is real. Although it is perfectly clear that this has nothing to do with reality, it is equally clear that it has everything to do with reality as you perceive it.

If you would like to support any of the activities of the Society in any way, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Because of the international character of CIMS, the internet is our primary means of communicating and collaborating.

CIMS is a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and donations are tax deductible.

ALSO, by means of your will or other estate plan, you can name "Course in Miracles Society" as the beneficiary of a portion of your estate, or of particular assets in your estate.

In this way, you are honoring your loved ones while also providing critical support to the extension of LOVE.
