The ongoing stream of our UU tradition has many sources, and it's had a winding journey, with whitewater rapids and reflecting pools. What is the streambed of our faith?

Romantic Love Is Overrated

Music by the UUSS Choir and Music Director Keith Atwater
Candles of Celebration or Sorrow (leave a card and/or light a candle before the service)
Soup Sunday after service

The fire and passion of romantic love can ignite powerful connections. But it is the quieter emotions----respect, humility, and kindness----which sustain and enhance our commitments. On this Valentine's Day we explore the ups and downs of long-term relationships and consider how kindness will enrich--and contempt will destroy--the love between two people.

Fire and Blessing
An All-Ages Service
Rev. Lucy Bunch with Worship Associates Molly Stuart, Linda Roth, and Christopher Jensen. Music by the UUSS Choir and Music Director Keith Atwater

Imbolc ("first milk") is the Celtic holiday that falls between Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. In ancient days people would clean their houses in early February to prepare for the coming of Spring. At this service we prepare for spring by cleaning our spiritual houses and letting go of worries or emotions that have stayed with us over the winter. We will each receive a blessing for going forward into new growth. There will be singing, stories, fun, glitter and FIRE!  Don't miss it. The choir sings, too!

Ritual for Milestones: Joys and Sorrows
Chili Sunday after the service sponsored by the Board of Trustees

In our consumer culture we are always looking for the best deal, the best value.  How does our quest for value translate into our financial commitment to the congregation? How do we place a value on our what we gain from UUSS?   Rev Lucy will explore this topic as we launch our pledge drive to determine the budget for the coming year. You might be surprised at what she proposes.
Community Partners:  Wind Youth Services in February
Each month we share our collection plate with a partner in the community. February's Community Partner is Wind Youth Services, providing supportive services and opportunities to youth experiencing homelessness as they pursue self-determined lives of stability and independence.

At our Christmas Eve Service, we collected $1,669 that we shared with River City Food Bank.  December Sunday Shared Offerings of $1,991 supported the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. Thank you for your generosity!
Pledge Drive Begins February 28:  Keep the Momentum Going!
By Virginia Johnson

The UUSS annual Stewardship Drive for 2016-17 formally starts Sunday, February 28. During this time, we each determine our annual monetary pledge to support the operations and ongoing activities of our community for which we are so grateful. To build momentum, the Stewardship Committee will contact UUSS leadership and others prior to the formal opening.
Spring Fling-The Auction Thing!
By Victoria Owens

Planning for the annual UUSS Service Auction is gathering steam! To be held Saturday, April 16, at 5:30 p.m., this all-ages event will feature a delicious dinner, the ever-popular silent auction, a raffle and our new favorite, the cakewalk.

Please start thinking about your contributions. Donations for the silent auction should include service items only, such as dinners, outdoor activities, or adventures and professional services. The auction is not only a chance for UUSS to raise funds for the budget.  It's also a chance to expand your social connections. By donating a dinner, service, or event, you help support UUSS and connect with other members and friends.

Items for the raffle may include gift baskets made by you and your friends or donated gift cards. For the cakewalk, we will welcome cakes, pies and other fancy desserts.  We would also (really, really) welcome more volunteers. We need a lot of help to make the auction a success.

Look for a table with donation forms starting February 14, after the service. Tickets go on sale March 6.  Check the blue sheet for more information in the weeks to come!

If you have questions or wish to volunteer, email Kathy Bernard or call her at  916-812-2761 or . Direct your questions on auction donations to Annette Emery or call her at  916-296-2650.
Senior Minister's Message:  Where Did this Come From?
By Rev. Roger Jones

So many visitors and other folks comment on how lively, friendly, warm and generous this congregation is. Thank you! The program year is barely half over, and so much is happening at UUSS.

Now it's time to think about the coming program year and to pledge our support to a budget that will support our vitality. As we look forward, here's what I hope we can make happen in the new budget year:
  • Keep our creative energy and momentum going strong.
  • Bring on a seminary intern for nine months of ministry--to serve UUSS and learn from one of the best examples of a thriving, healthy congregation.
  • Create more opportunities for families, kids, and elders to make friends!
  • Compensate our dedicated staff members to be sure we are being just (with a living wage) and competitive (so we keep them with us).
  • Expand the Music Director position enough to take advantage of Keith's very strong gifts of leadership, collaboration, and recruitment of volunteer musicians of all kinds and some of the best local musician guests.
  • Develop a coherent and strong social action theme for the year and combine learning, reflection, outreach, hands-on service and advocacy.
  • Add even more opportunities for spiritual practice and learning together.
Some folks may not know where it all comes from.  It comes from the generous gifts of time, talent and financial contributions of members, families, and friends like you.

I hope you can make what you consider to be a generous monthly pledge to the budget for the coming year. I plan to do so as well. Let's keep our momentum while building connections within, among, and beyond ourselves.

Yours in service,

P.S.: Don't miss the spiritual retreat with my seminary classmate on Saturday, March 5.  See the article under Adult Enrichment.  David will also be here on Sunday, March 6, when he will be our guest leader for the Senior High Youth Group.  Don't miss the 60s and 70s dance party on March 12, with our own live band, No Divas.

Where Is Rev. Roger in February?

Office Hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 2:00 to 6:30 p.m.--also Mondays and Fridays by appointment. Absences: Roger will be working on his thesis February 8, and visiting friends in Tucson, February 19 to 22.  For his birthday he will host a sports party at the YMCA's gym on February 7. All UU kids and youth welcome, but please sign up on Sunday. Adults welcome to provide refreshments.
Celebrations and Sorrows
By Rev. Lucy Bunch

Some of you may have noticed some changes in our sharing of "joys and sorrows."  Roger and I have implemented new rituals in the Sunday services to help broaden the ways that members of our community can share what is on their hearts and minds.  "Milestones" which will be offered on the third or fourth Sunday of every month, is similar to "joys and sorrows" in that participants come forward and share an important passage, joy or sorrow that is present for them that day.  In this new ritual, a stone is dropped in water.  It is always acceptable to come up and drop the stone in silence, rather than sharing out loud.

On the second Sunday of the month we have started a ritual "Candles of Celebration or Sorrow."  This ritual is for people who would prefer to have their message read by the ministers during the prayer, or want to share their concern privately with the minister.  We ask you to fill out a card with your celebration or sorrow, noting whether you would like it read out loud during the prayer, and if you would like your name used.  Often there are several cards with private messages for the ministers that are not shared with the congregation. This is a wonderful way for us to know what is going on in your life and reach out to you if you request contact.

As we introduced this ritual we have handed out the cards and lit the candles during the service.  Beginning February 14 we are asking that the cards be filled out and the candles lit when you first arrive at the Sanctuary, before the service starts. You are always welcome to light a candle without leaving a card.  Messages that are to be shared with the congregation will be included in the pastoral prayer during the service.  This ritual will happen on the second Sunday of the month and we will send out reminders in the Unigram and Minister's email message.

Thanks for your patience as we become accustomed to these new rituals.  We hope that these practices will be inclusive of the introverts, extroverts, candles lovers and all who need our support or wish to share their happiness and hopes.

Where Is Rev. Lucy in February?

I will be with you all Sundays in February. My regular church hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. If you'd like to meet with me, it's always best to call or e-mail in advance so I can be sure to be available. Monday is my Sabbath, and I try to avoid e-mail on that day.
Sabbatical Plans and Seminary Intern for 2016-17
By Linda Clear, UUSS Board President, and Rev. Roger Jones

As noted in the January Unigram " President' s Prose," in the next fiscal year our senior minister will take six months of sabbatical, in accord with the Letter of Agreement we signed when we called Roger, who will be in his ninth year of ministry with UUSS. A sabbatical leave is a time for renewal, rest, reflection, and enrichment in a person's ministerial vocation. Roger has yet to plan which months to be away, but he expects to finish and defend his thesis, travel abroad, and rest.

In those six months, Rev. Lucy Bunch will serve in the senior minister position. We know she and Roger have both been working very hard for us. Lucy's ministry already includes staff supervision, program development and volunteer support, pastoral care, stewardship, Spiritual Deepening Circles, weddings and memorial services, preaching, and creating our all-ages worship services.

The Board has approved advertising for a full-time seminary intern for the September 2016 to May 2017 school year. If and when we identify a gifted and energetic seminarian who would be suitable for serving with us, that person will have the exceptional opportunity to serve in most aspects of our congregation's life and ministry.

He or she will have greater responsibilities when Roger is away, so this position is unique, and UUSS is an appealing site. We have advertised this full-time opportunity with a stipend at the level recommended by the UUA for our size. Having a talented and energetic UU seminarian come here to learn and serve with us will not only be a contribution to the UU movement, it will also keep the momentum and enthusiasm going which we have enjoyed over the past year here at UUSS.

If you have questions, please feel free to talk to me or any Board member for further information.

Yours in Faith,
Linda and Roger

About Dave's ministry:
As a spiritual director Rev. Dave Scheuneman brings wisdom, compassion, joy, and a spirit of devotion to everyone he teaches and coaches. A third-generation Unitarian Universalist, David is a graduate of Meadville Lombard Theological School, where he specialized in spiritual development and led weekly meditation for classmates, including Roger.

Drawing on training from several sources--including Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, and the Christian contemplative prayer tradition-- he has taught meditation for over 20 years, in UU practice groups at churches in Washington and Nevada, and at UU retreat centers.  Since 2005, he has also had a thriving ministry with youth and young adults on Star Island, the UU conference center off the New Hampshire coast.

As a traveling teacher and facilitator, he relies on the generosity of supporters to keep his ministry sustainable. Rev. Roger invited Dave to swing by and share his gifts and get to know folks at UUSS.

Join a Joyous Sing-a-Long Every Third Sunday After the Service
By Keith Atwater

Celebrating Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, birthday in January reminds us of decades of activism and efforts to achieve social justice for many millions of Americans who've suffered racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination. Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, one of the founders of the women's vocal group, "Sweet Honey In the Rock," wrote this about the civil rights and gospel songs that energized protesters:  "The power of a mass of human voices is a remarkable thing. It sends out a wall of sound in advance of the singers, which is almost palpable, a physical force clearly felt within and outside the group. This power enhances the strength of the individual through the group and the immersion of one voice in a vast sea of united voices."

We feel this power when we sing together every Sunday! I invite you to join others on the third Sunday of the month, after the service, to come down to the piano and sing a few of your favorite empowering UU songs and hymns!  You can also choose and practice a song on piano or guitar at home, then experience playing that song for a small group in a supportive atmosphere of music making. Together we can feel the power of music, as we did when the choir and our guest Artesia Davis sang in November (See photo below.).

In joy,

Freedom Club Visits Congressman Bera
By Petra Stanton

On January 10, the Free dom Club  Kids  visited  the office of local U.S. Congressman Ami Bera and made a presentation they had prepared on the issue of slavery. The kids advocated for the needs of slaves and made several legislative requests of the congressman:
  • to co-sponsor a bill that would require companies to ensure slavery stays out of their supply chains
  • for additional funding for anti-slavery efforts, and
  • to have safety measures included in trade agreements.
Congressman Bera promised to look into these request and spent time talking with the kids about freedom as well as life in general. Faith Whitmore, the local office director for Dr. Bera, coordinated the meeting and shared that she learned something new from the kids, too.

After the excitement of the visit,  Congressman
Bera on TV just the kids enjoyed seeing  a couple of days later,  during the State of the
Union address.

Bye-bye, Bobby Stewart!
Roberta Stewart is moving to West Orange, New Jersey, by the end of February, to live near the family of her daughter, Claire Maffei.  This is a big change for Bobby, who has been a UUSS member since 1963.  She brought her four children up here, attended services regularly, participated in the Women's Alliance and most notably has been a leader of Theater One since the 1960s.

She's been director, actor, producer, cheerleader, publicist, house manager, ticket seller, and concession worker-sometimes all for the same show.  When she was in charge of a show, she'd write thank you notes to staff and ministers who had helped Theater One, and leave comp tickets for us.  Last year the company created a new award for Theater One service and named it "The Bobby."

Among other community activities, she volunteered as a docent for the Crocker Art Museum.  She also served on our UUSS staff as Office Assistant for several years, helping members and visitors to get connected.

I appreciate her graciousness, beauty, generosity, encouragement and love.  In 2008 she attended a New Testament study class I led, bringing the narratives of Jesus alive by describing his depiction in Jesus Christ, Superstar

Bobby hates to leave Sacramento but will have good support from Claire and won't be far from a UU church.  We hate to lose you, Bobby.  You are irreplaceable and unforgettable!  As you prepare to rediscover northeastern winters for the first time in 80 years, we send you our warm wishes and our deep thanks.

To commemorate Bobby's years of service, honorary contributions would be welcome to the Heritage Fund or UUSS Endowment.  We will let her know the names of all who have given in her honor.
