CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
"THE BODY AND THE DREAM"
VIII. "The Illusion of Suffering"

75Dream softly of your sinless brother, who unites with you in holy innocence. And from this dream, the Lord of Heaven will Himself awaken His beloved Son. Dream of your brother's kindnesses instead of dwelling in your dreams on his mistakes. Select his thoughtfulness to dream about instead of counting up the hurts he gave. Forgive him his illusions and give thanks to him for all the helpfulness he gave. And do not brush aside his many gifts because he is not perfect in your dreams.

WHAT IS THE REAL WORLD?
What is the Real World

*IAMBIC PENTAMETER*

What is 'Iambic Pentameter'?

The real world is a symbol, like the rest

of what perception offers. Yet it stands

for what is opposite to what you made.

Your world is seen through eyes of fear, and brings

the witnesses of terror to your mind.

The real world cannot be perceived except

through eyes forgiveness blesses, so they see

a world where terror is impossible,

and witnesses to fear can not be found.

The real world holds a counterpart for each

   unhappy thought reflected in your world;

a sure correction for the sights of fear

and sounds of battle which your world contains.

The real world shows a world seen differently,

through quiet eyes and with a mind at peace.

Nothing but rest is here. There are no cries

of pain and sorrow heard, for nothing here

remains outside forgiveness. And the sights

are gentle. Only happy sights and sounds

can reach the mind that has forgiven itself.

What need has such a mind for thoughts of death,

attack and murder? What can it perceive

surrounding it but safety, love and joy?

What is there it would choose to be condemned,

and what is there that it would judge against?

The world it sees arises from a mind

at peace within itself. No danger lurks

in anything it sees, for it is kind

and only kindness does it look upon.

The real world is the symbol that the dream

of sin and guilt is over, and God's Son

no longer sleeps. His waking eyes perceive

   the sure reflection of his Father's Love;

the certain promise that he is redeemed.

The real world signifies the end of time,

for this perception makes time purposeless.

The Holy Spirit has no need of time

when it has served His purpose. Now He waits

but that one instant more for God to take

His final step, and time has disappeared,

taking perception with it as it goes,

and leaving but the Truth to be Itself.

That instant is our goal, for it contains

the memory of God. And as we look

upon a world forgiven, it is He

Who calls to us and comes to take us home,

   reminding us of our Identity

Which our forgiveness has restored to us.

This is a day of stillness and of peace.

Christ's vision looks through me today. His sight

shows me all things forgiven and at peace,

and offers this same vision to the world.

And I accept this vision in its name,

both for myself and for the world as well.

What loveliness we look upon today!

What holiness we see surrounding us!

And it is given us to recognize

   it is a holiness in which we share;

it is the Holiness of God Himself.

This day my mind is quiet, to receive

the Thoughts You offer me. And I accept

what comes from You instead of from myself.

I do not know the way to You. But You

are wholly certain. Father, guide Your Son

along the quiet path that leads to You.

Let my forgiveness be complete, and let

the memory of You return to me.

ACIM Edmonton - Sarah's Reflections

ACIM Edmonton, CA

Lesson 291
This is a day of stillness and of peace.

Sarah's Commentary:

In this section called "What is the Real World?" (W.PII.Q8), Jesus says, "The real world is a symbol, like the rest of what perception offers. Yet it stands for what is opposite to what you made." (W.PII.Q8.1.1-2) In other words, perception is not reality, but it reflects reality, just like forgiveness, which reflects perfect love, and joining, which reflects Oneness. It is a state of mind, which is a reflection of the truth of who we are. It is not truth itself but the closest we come to it in the world of perception. It is the culmination of our journey with the ego as guide. It is to follow only the Voice of the Holy Spirit, which is in the right mind. Thus the real world is right-minded perception, where we see behind appearances to the light beyond them. As Jesus says,  "There can be no appearance that can not be overlooked." (T.30.VI.5.4)(ACIM OE T.30.VII.74) No matter how brutal events might appear to be, there is a call to see with the eyes of love to the truth beyond all appearances. "Be not deceived about the meaning of a fixed belief that some appearances are harder to look past than others are." (T.30.VI.6.4)(ACIM OE T.30.VII.75) If we do, we are making the error real and seeing a hierarchy among illusions. All illusions are equally untrue.

The real world is the undoing of the separation. It is the recognition that the Son of God is guiltless. The work of forgiveness is now complete. The past has been released and the voice of the ego that has told us who we are is now undone. The real world is not yet Heaven but is a reflection of Heaven. It is the symbol of the awakened state. It is a world which "holds a counterpart for each unhappy thought reflected in your world; a sure correction for the sights of fear and sounds of battle which your world contains." (W.PII.Q8.2.1)

We now see this world through "quiet eyes and with a mind at peace."(W.PII.Q8.2.2) It is a state of mind outside of the world of hate, attack, pain, sorrow and death. In other words, it is a state of mind outside of this dream. In this dream, Jesus says that we are actually asleep, dreaming of exile from our state of perfect oneness. It seems to us that this state of oneness has seemingly split into billions of fragments all different from each other. In this state, we are all competing with each other, doing our best to serve our own self-interest. It is a state of conflict where there can be no peace.

The problems of this world seem to be never ending, but they are all actually only one problem. It is the belief in separation. "Preoccupations with problems set up to be incapable of solution are favorite ego devices for impeding learning progress." (T.4.V.6.6)(ACIM OE T.4.VI.77) Isn't that what occupies most of our attention? We seem to solve one problem and three others show up. It is a never ending cycle. The only answer is in recognizing their purpose, which is to keep us distracted from the truth of who we are. The truth is that, "The Holy Spirit will answer every specific problem as long as you believe that problems are specific." (T.11.VIII.5.5)(ACIM OE T.10.VIII.80) Trust and faith are called for so that when problems show up in our lives, we immediately turn to Him rather than to the ego for the answer. "All bring their different problems to its healing light, and all their problems find but healing there." (T.14.IX.7.4)(ACIM OE T.14.V.44) The real world is a world of rest from the conflict and seeming problems of this world with only happy sights and sounds seen and heard.

Within the dream, death and attack have reality because we have given them reality. The body seems real as does the world, which is a projection of guilt that arose as a result of the attack on God. This attack was reflected in the separation where, in order for our identity as the separate, individual self to exist, God could not exist. It had to be either me or God because my perceived state of individuality and that of oneness cannot both be true. If we think our reality is true, then God must be non-existent. We have made this thought system of 'one or the other' real in our minds.

When we recognize that this life is not serving us, not bringing us the peace and joy that we yearn for, then we are ready to commit to this path. "Tolerance for pain may be high, but it is not without limit. Eventually everyone begins to recognize, however dimly, that there must be a better way. As this recognition becomes more firmly established, it becomes a turning point." (T.2.III.3.6-7(ACIM OE T.2.II.48) Until then, we do everything we can to adjust to the world and strive for the idols that we think will bring us happiness, but when we seek for happiness in the things of this world, it will always elude us.

If there is only kindness in the mind, then only kindness can be seen. Now there is nothing to condemn or judge against. When we show kindness, we are recognizing our Source as being kind, and then we can know that kindness is in our own minds. When the mind is totally kind, then all thoughts and perceptions would be kind because they are all products of the mind. Now, "Only happy sights and sounds can reach the mind that has forgiven itself." (W.PII.Q8.2.6)

The real world signifies the end of time as now time has served its purpose. Time was made by us to reinforce guilt, but time is used by the Holy Spirit for healing of guilt. Thus time was made by us for a hurtful purpose, but the Holy Spirit uses it to help us awaken to the truth of who we are. This requires bringing our grievances, attack thoughts, all dark thoughts to the light. If we hold onto grievances, we are saying that we don't want to return home. We need to be aware of our decisions to judge and attack, because they are simply decisions to stay in the dream and choose to see ourselves as separate and alone. "The Holy Spirit needs a happy learner, in whom His mission can be happily accomplished. You who are steadfastly devoted to misery must first recognize that you are miserable and not happy. The Holy Spirit cannot teach without this contrast, for you believe that misery is happiness." (T.14.II.1.1-3)(ACIM OE T.13.VII.54)

This lesson comes each year to me on my birthday. I take it as my gift from the Holy Spirit every year to devote this day to stillness and peace knowing that it is a gift I already have. It is a gift that we can accept anytime that we choose. The loveliness of this day depends on what I have chosen within. "Spiritual vision looks within and recognizes immediately that the altar has been defiled and needs to be repaired and protected. Perfectly aware of the right defense it passes over all others, looking past error to truth. Because of the strength of its vision, it brings the mind into its service. This re-establishes the power of the mind and makes it increasingly unable to tolerate delay, realizing that it only adds unnecessary pain." (T.2.III.4.3-6)(ACIM OE T.2.II.49)

Delay shows up when we stubbornly resist the Correction and choose instead to hold onto our version of events and to use them to justify our lack of peace. When we recognize that this just brings more pain, we become motivated to refuse to tolerate delay. The time between the event and our decision to accept healing into the mind is considerably shortened. Where it seemed to take us months to get over something painful, it gets reduced to weeks, then days, then minutes and finally seconds. It becomes much too painful to hold onto grievances.

The day of stillness and peace talked about in this lesson is not about anything outside of our minds. Stillness and peace is, in fact, an attribute of our minds. It is who we really are in our creation. Anything unlike that is not our natural state. The experiences that we seem to have that create turmoil and distress in our lives are not the truth. They are not a fact. Jesus says that what is a fact is that this day is a day of stillness and peace. How can that be? Which is true? What he says or what I am experiencing? Am I a body living in the world or am I the Christ? Only one of these realities is true. Which one do I accept? My frame of reference looks like chaos, with unpredictable events. I seem to be at their mercy, but this is not the frame of reference of this teaching. Do I open up to the holiness, which is the truth, or hold to my frame of reference?

In Chapter 14, thoughts in the mind are described as having  "a weaving, changing pattern that never rests and is never still. It shifts unceasingly across the mirror of your mind, and the reflections of Heaven last but a moment and grow dim, as darkness blots them out." (T.14.X.5.1-2)(ACIM OE T.14.VI.49) It is this restless mind, with all of the thoughts that go around and around, that creates chaos for us. That is why we are challenged to watch our thoughts and release them to the Holy Spirit. It is a discipline that takes time and practice, but it is the only way to uncover what is always behind these thoughts. What is always there in our right minds, blocked by our restless thoughts, is stillness and peace. "I rule my mind which I alone must rule." (W.PII.236) The thoughts that we hold and the feelings that we experience are what blocks the holiness surrounding us.

To us salvation is about getting everything done in the world by attending to our stuff. We even get anxious about not understanding the Course perfectly or believing that we are not even good at meditating! But that is just another way we bring suffering to the mind, which is how the ego thought system is maintained. It is continual noise in the mind, which keeps God away since God is in the quiet mind. One way that we keep truth away is by arguing, judging, comparing, holding opinions, wanting to be right and controlling. It is the way of the ego and keeps the ego in business. When the temptation is there to jump into the fray, I find that if I remember to step back, take a breath, and ask for help, then the mind is set free from the trap that the ego has laid for it. Now the Christ Self is in charge and all is well. Nothing can upset this Self.

Until we have the experience of the real world, our world certainly seems real and solid, so it seems to us that it is God's world that is the illusion. This world does seem real and tangible to us just as all of our problems here seem real and tangible. But as we experience the foreshadowing of the real world with moments of true peace and joy, our faith in His Word increases. As we withdraw our investment in all that we have made real, we will increasingly see that what seems so real and solid to us is actually a dream. It is all an illusion that we have made up and believe to be reality.

We need do nothing to experience stillness and peace except to bring awareness to the way we are blocking our true Will, which we share with God. What that means is that we bring awareness to the thoughts that we think we are thinking. At the darkest point of his life, Eckhart Tolle said that he could not live with himself any longer. Then suddenly he became aware of what a peculiar thought that was. "Am I one or two?" he wondered. "If I cannot live with myself there must be two of me, the 'I' and the 'self' that 'I' cannot live with. "Maybe," he thought, "only one of them is real." He was so stunned by this realization that all of his thinking stopped, and he was taken to a state of bliss, which lasted for days.

In order to experience the truth of this lesson, we need to bring awareness to what we are thinking, how we are judging, the expectations we have of others, the plans we are making against future fears, and the grievances we are holding. We need to recognize that these thoughts are keeping us from the real world. We will experience the peace and stillness when the mind goes quiet. And in the quiet mind is where we connect to our Source. It does not mean that there are not thoughts there, but we simply choose not to listen to them and not to be our focus on them. By now we know that this is not an easy process though. It takes a lot of discipline and determined effort. In the beginning stages, which by the way can last a long time, we may find that things seem worse because we are uncovering a whole host of thoughts that we had never been aware of before because they were so well hidden by our conditioned minds. These thoughts are covered over but, nevertheless they are in the program that runs our lives. As they are exposed, we may judge ourselves for them, but this is not helpful. Welcome them, for in this awareness, they are brought to light where they will dissipate into the nothingness from which they came.

I recognize today that, "I do not know the way to you." (W.291.2.3) When I think I know, then I put myself in charge of my healing, but this is just the ego thinking that it can clean up its own act and become a spiritual person. Until we admit we don't know and have been wrong in all of our judgments and perceptions, we will not be willing to ask for another way to see everything. It reminds me of the movie, "Dark City", where the ego was trying to find the way out by looking for a taxi or train to get out of the dark city and go to the beach (Heaven). It wants to think it can figure its own way, but the ego's way will never work. In the movie, the way to leave the illusory world was to give up all doubt thoughts and, in surrendering, the way was opened up. It is the same for us. We basically have to give up our way and our answers and recognize that we don't know. We only need the desire to be taught. "Father, guide Your Son along the quiet path that leads to You. Let my forgiveness be complete, and let the memory of You return to me." (W.291.2.5-6)

"How much do you want salvation? It will give you the real world, trembling with readiness to be given you. The eagerness of the Holy Spirit to give you this is so intense He would not wait, although He waits in patience. Meet His patience with your impatience at delay in meeting Him. Go out in gladness to meet with your Redeemer, and walk with Him in trust out of this world and into the real world of beauty and forgiveness." (T.17.II.8.1-5)(ACIM OE T.17.III.13)

Today I am reminded to, "Let my forgiveness be complete, and let the memory of You return to me." (W.291.2.6) I recognize if I just get this, it would take me all the way home.

"To meet everything and everyone through stillness instead of mental noise is the greatest gift you can offer to the universe. I call it stillness, but it is a jewel with many facets: that stillness is also joy, and it is love."
Eckhart Tolle

Love and blessings, Sarah

TEXT Paused for Weekend

VIII. The Illusion of Suffering

62 Suffering is an emphasis upon all that the world has done to injure you. Here is the world's demented version of salvation clearly shown. Like to a dream of punishment in which the dreamer is unconscious of what brought on the attack against himself, he sees himself attacked unjustly and by something not himself. He is the victim of this "something else," a thing outside himself for which he has no reason to be held responsible. He must be innocent because he knows not what he does, but what is done to him. Yet is his own attack upon himself apparent still, for it is he who bears the suffering. And he cannot escape because its source is seen outside himself.

63 Now you are being shown you can escape. All that is needed is you look upon the problem as it is, and not the way that you have set it up. How could there be another way to solve a problem which is very simple but has been obscured by heavy clouds of complication which were made to keep the problem unresolved? Without the clouds, the problem will emerge in all its primitive simplicity. The choice will not be difficult, because the problem is absurd when clearly seen. No one has difficulty making up his mind to let a simple problem be resolved if it is seen as hurting him and also very easily removed.

64 The "reasoning" by which the world is made, on which it rests, by which it is maintained, is simply this: "You are the cause of what I do. Your presence justifies my wrath, and you exist and think apart from me. While you attack, I must be innocent. And what I suffer from is your attack." No one who looks upon this "reasoning" exactly as it is could fail to see it does not follow, and it makes no sense. Yet it seems sensible because it looks as if the world were hurting you. And so it seems as if there is no need to go beyond the obvious in terms of cause.

65 There is indeed a need. The world's escape from condemnation is a need which those within the world are joined in sharing. Yet they do not recognize their common need. For each one thinks that if he does his part, the condemnation of the world will rest on him. And it is this that he perceives to be his part in its deliverance. Vengeance must have a focus. Otherwise is the avenger's knife in his own hand and pointed to himself. And he must see it in another's hand if he would be a victim of attack he did not choose. And thus he suffers from the wounds a knife he does not hold has made upon himself. This is the purpose of the world he sees. And looked at thus, the world provides the means by which this purpose seems to be fulfilled.

66 The means attest the purpose but are not themselves a cause. Nor will the cause be changed by seeing it apart from its effects. The cause produces the effects which then bear witness to the cause and not themselves. Look, then, beyond effects. It is not here the cause of suffering and sin must lie. And dwell not on the suffering and sin, for they are but reflections of their cause.

67 The part you play in salvaging the world from condemnation is your own escape. Forget not that the witness to the world of evil cannot speak except for what has seen a need for evil in the world. And this is where your guilt was first beheld. In separation from your brother was the first attack upon yourself begun. And it is this the world bears witness to. Seek not another cause nor look among the mighty legions of its witnesses for its undoing. They support its claim on your allegiance. What conceals the truth is not where you should look to find the truth. The witnesses to sin all stand within one little space. And it is here you find the cause of your perspective on the world.

68 Once you were unaware of what the cause of everything the world appeared to thrust upon you, uninvited and unasked, must really be. Of one thing you were sure---of all the many causes you perceived as bringing pain and suffering to you, your guilt was not among them. Nor did you in any way request them for yourself. This is how all illusions come about. The one who makes them does not see himself as making them, and their reality does not depend on him. Whatever cause they have is something quite apart from him, and what he sees is separate from his mind. He cannot doubt his dreams' reality because he does not see the part he plays in making them and making them seem real.

69 No one can waken from a dream the world is dreaming for him. He becomes a part of someone else's dream. He cannot choose to waken from a dream he did not make. Helpless he stands, a victim to a dream conceived and cherished by a separate mind. Careless indeed of him this mind must be, as thoughtless of his peace and happiness as is the weather or the time of day. It loves him not but casts him as it will in any role that satisfies its dream. So little is his worth that he is but a dancing shadow, leaping up and down according to a senseless plot conceived within the idle dreaming of the world.

70 This is the only picture you can see, the one alternative that you can choose, the other possibility of cause if you be not the dreamer of your dreams. And this is what you choose, if you deny the cause of suffering is in your mind. Be glad indeed it is, for thus are you the one decider of your destiny in time. The choice is yours to make between a sleeping death and dreams of evil or a happy wakening and joy of life. What could you choose between but life or death, waking or sleeping, peace or war, your dreams or your reality? Yet if the choice is really given you, then you must see the causes of the things you choose between exactly as they are and where they are. What choices can be made between two states, but one of which is clearly recognized? Who could be free to choose between effects when only one is seen as up to him?

71 An honest choice could never be perceived as one in which the choice is split between a tiny you and an enormous world, with different dreams about the truth in you. The gap between reality and dreams lies not between the dreaming of the world and what you dream in secret. They are one. The dreaming of the world is but a part of your own dream you gave away and saw as if it were its start and ending both. Yet was it started by your secret dream, which you do not perceive, although it caused the part you see and do not doubt is real. How could you doubt it while you lie asleep and dream in secret that its cause is real?

72 A brother separated from yourself, an ancient enemy, a murderer who stalks you in the night and plots your death, yet plans that it be lingering and slow-of this you dream. Yet underneath this dream is yet another in which you become the murderer, the secret enemy, the scavenger and the destroyer of your brother and the world alike. Here is the cause of suffering, the space between your dreams and your reality. The little gap you do not even see, the birthplace of illusions and of fear, the time of terror and of ancient hate, the instant of disaster, all are here. Here is the cause of unreality. And it is here that it will be undone.

73 You are the dreamer of the world of dreams. No other cause it has, nor ever will. Nothing more fearful than an idle dream has terrified God's Son and made him think that he has lost his innocence, denied his Father, and made war upon himself. So fearful is the dream, so seeming real, he could not waken to reality without the sweat of terror and a scream of mortal fear unless a gentler dream preceded his awaking and allowed his calmer mind to welcome, not to fear, the Voice that calls with love to waken him. [A gentler dream, in which his suffering was healed and where his brother was his friend.] God willed he waken gently and with joy. And gave him means to waken without fear. Accept the dream He gave instead of yours. It is not difficult to change a dream when once the dreamer has been recognized.

74 Rest in the Holy Spirit and allow His gentle dreams to take the place of those you dreamed in terror and in fear of death. He brings forgiving dreams in which the choice is not who is the murderer and who shall be the victim. In the dreams He brings, there is no murder and there is no death. The dream of guilt is fading from your sight, although your eyes are closed. A smile has come to lighten up your sleeping face. The sleep is peaceful now, for these are happy dreams.

75 Dream softly of your sinless brother, who unites with you in holy innocence.

76 He represents his Father, Whom you see as offering both life and death to you. Brother, He gives but life. Yet what you see as gifts your brother offers represent the gifts you dream your Father gives to you. Let all your brother's gifts be seen in light of charity and kindness offered you. And let no pain disturb your dream of deep appreciation for his gifts to you.

To GIVE and to RECEIVE are One in Truth. Lesson 108

Presently all CIMS projects are wholly supported by free will gifts of time, talent, and money. If you would like to support any of the activities of the Society in any way, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Because of the international character of CIMS, the internet is our primary means of communicating and collaborating.

CIMS is a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and donations are tax deductible.

ALSO, by means of your will or other estate plan, you can name "Course in Miracles Society" as the beneficiary of a portion of your estate, or of particular assets in your estate.

In this way, you are honoring your loved ones while also providing critical support to the extension of LOVE.

Namaste and Thank You!
