presmessagePresident's Message

The past month has been a truly transitional and pivotal time for VA ASLA.  Jennifer Daoulas, President-Elect, resigned from her position on the Executive Committee and accepted an employment position in Florida.  Although, we are disappointed in her departure, we wish her the best in her future career endeavors.  We are happy to announce that Lynn Crump, ASLA, a past Virginia Chapter Trustee and President was appointed to fill the President-Elect position.

At a public meeting held on Wednesday August 13, Lynn Crump, ASLA, Dick Gibbons, FASLA, myself, and Guoping Huang, D. Des., Assistant Professor at University of Virginia presented the results of the James River Viewshed Community Service Project.  The results were well received by those attending and the City of Richmond Planners. We are delighted this project is completed and is now available to the public. (See below)   This Community Service Project is the basis for a one-day conference for on October 10, 2014.  This conference will provide more in-depth presentations on the viewshed analysis, as well as, the Libby Hill Park timetable documentation by Brian Katen, ASLA and Virginia Tech students.  Lindsay Larkin, VA ASLA Administrator, will be sending out registration information very soon.

Perhaps, one of the most significant landscape architecture events in recent years to come to Virginia is the What's Out There Weekend - Richmond on October 25-26.  WOTW-Richmond is coordinated by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF).  Virginia ALSA is helping sponsor this event which will highlight significant Richmond landscapes through professionally lead tours and educational information found on the CLF website.  As a prelude to WOTW, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will hold their bi-annual Gillette Forum on October 23-24.

Please contact me, if you have any VA ASLA matters you may want to discuss.   I look forward to talking with you and seeing you at one or all of the up-coming VA ASLA events which you can read about in this e-newsletter.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Shepherd, PLA, ASLA

WOTWRichmondWhat's Out There Weekend Richmond

What's Out There Weekend, scheduled for October 25 & 26, features free, expert-led tours at more than two-dozen significant examples of designed landscapes in and around Richmond. The Richmond-area includes antebellum plantations and gardens, Colonial Revival city gardens, remarkable post-industrial parkland integrated with the James River, and significant Modernist plazas and public spaces. What's Out There Weekend tours provide fascinating insights about city shaping, landscape architecture and the design history of places they may pass every day but don't necessarily know about.

The What's Out There Weekend program dovetails with the Web-based What's Out There, the nation's most comprehensive searchable database of historic designed landscapes. The database currently features more than 1,500 sites, 10,000 images and 750 designer profiles. And, What's Out There is optimized for iPhones and similar handheld devices, and includes What's Nearby - a GPS-enabled function that locates all landscapes in the database within a 25-mile radius of any given location.

Registration will be open in September. For the most up-to-date information, please visit the Cultural Landscape Foundation's information page or email Matthew Traucht with the Cultural Landscape Foundation at [email protected].

If you, or your firm, have been contacted by the CLF to help sponsor What's Out There Weekend - Richmond, please give your support by being a sponsor for this nationally publicized program.  We need everyone's support and participation for a successful event showcasing Richmond's unique landscapes.
ViewshedStudyViewshed Study Public Meeting Held on August 13

The Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (VA ASLA) held a public meeting to present the results of the James River Corridor Viewshed Study.  The meeting took place on Wednesday August 13, 2014 at the Storefront for Community Design in Richmond.

There was a presentation on the results of the study for over 40 attendees followed by a brief period to ask questions.  The study documents were on display for review by those who attended and can be accessed on the VA ASLA website here.

The viewshed study was conducted by the Virginia Chapter of ASLA as a community service project.  The majority of the work for this project was done by students and faculty in the Landscape Architecture Programs at University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.

If you have questions, you may contact the VA ASLA office at [email protected].

VAAccord
The Virginia Accord: Revisioning Virginia for the Next 100 Years

As the Virginia Society AIA looks towards the next 100 years in Virginia, it brings together the planning and design disciplines to examine two key themes critical to the future - job creation and environmental sustainability. Consider these topics through the lenses of transportation, the constructed environment, public health, land development, and urban infill at the Virginia Accord on Sept. 19-20, 2014 at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Va.

GilletteForum
Making Beauty Sustainable: The Charles F. Gillette Forum

By examining the critical processes of plant ecology and applying them to landscape and planting design, we inspire a dialogue: about how to responsibly design, install, and manage the environment to mitigate and slow down climate change.

The 2013 opening of the New York Botanical Garden's New Native Plant Garden hoisted the ongoing discussion about ecological landscape design and the use of native plants into higher profile. The 2014 Gillette Forum considers how the principles of ecological design create a network of sustainable, ecological, and regenerative landscapes.

Event information for the upcoming Gillette Forum is now available on the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden website. Click here for event details, schedule, and registration. For speaker biographies, please view their Speaker Bios Page.

Submit Your Entry for the Jefferson Pocket Park Competition

The Jefferson Avenue Pocket Park Design Competition is the brainchild of 3HC, the junior board of The Better Housing Coalition. 3HC has partnered with local groups The Enrichmond Foundation and Friends of Jefferson Park, as well as the local community, to support and establish the park, and maintain it for all to enjoy.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), approximately 4,400 automobiles travel along Jefferson Avenue each day, establishing it as a major corridor and gateway into and out of the greater Church Hill neighborhood.

Entries will address community input, shared community space, fiscal responsibility, low maintenance design, history, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability. Entries will be judged by a local jury consisting of designers, artists, and civic leaders. The entry that best addresses the four points in the Considerations and Context Section will be awarded a cash prize of $500. All submissions must include a 200 to 400 word (maximum) narrative describing intentions, concepts, and strategies.

Obama
President Obama: Landscape Architects Play Role in Rebuilding Transportation Infrastructure
from LAND e-news, July 15, 2014

On July 3, a national NBC's Nightly News feature on the Highway Trust Fund included a clip from a speech by President Barack Obama in which he cited landscape architects. Obama states that fixing the trust fund is a necessary step that "that doesn't just put construction workers back to work, that puts engineers back to work, that puts landscape architects back to work...."

The president made his brief remarks during a visit to 1776, a tech startup incubator in Washington, D.C., that supports entrepreneurs tackling major challenges in education, energy, health care, and other critical industries.

ASLA's website now features the video clip of President Obama mention of landscape architects.

New Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement signed and goals set

An announcement from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality

The signing of the new Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement on June 16, 2014, represents a renewed commitment from Virginia and its Bay Program partners to continue protecting the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries, and surrounding lands.  "Our efforts going forward are crucial for bringing the Bay back to health," says DEQ Director David K. Paylor.  "This is the time to build on the successes we have seen in the past several years."  In fact, many aspects of the Bay's health have consistently improved over the last two decades, and it currently supports a protective, oxygen-rich surface or "pycnocline" layer that is at its highest density in 30 years.

The new agreement features 10 goals that will ultimately contribute to Bay restoration, for the first time including language for citizen stewardship, public access, and K-12 environmental literacy of students.  Included in the new agreement are goals for sustainable fisheries, vital habitats, water quality, toxic contaminants, healthy watersheds, stewardship, land conservation, public access, environmental literacy and climate resiliency.  The updated agreement keeps a focus on immediate results, while recognizing that long-term efforts must also be sustained.

The health of the Chesapeake Bay affects all Virginians, and despite recent improvements, the Bay still requires our close attention.  Thanks to the support of citizens of Virginia and the Bay's many stakeholders, our vision for the future of the Chesapeake Bay remains steadfast.  Only by continuing to work together can we achieve the goals of the new Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement, and continue to restore one of Virginia's most important bodies of water.
