Shelter Award Winners Announced

Each year, Michigan Pet Fund Alliance uses a variety of available data sources to determine if progress is being made toward becoming a no kill state.

The most important data set available is from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD): the annual shelter reports submitted by licensed shelters.

Based on those reports, MPFA creates a Save Rate report , ranks shelters by performance, and recognizes top shelters throughout the state.

The Award Winners for Shelter Save Rates are finalized for reporting year 2014.

Congratulations to the following shelters:

Outstanding Open Admission Shelters with the Best Save Rate:

Roscommon County Animal Shelter , Small Shelter (< 1000 annual intake) Roscommon County: 100% save rate in 2014.

Barry County Animal Shelter , Medium Shelter (> than 1000 but < 5000) Barry County: 100% save rate in 2014.

Humane Society of Huron Valley, Large Shelter (> 5000) Washtenaw County: 89% save rate in 2014.

Most Improved Open Admission Shelter:

Monroe County Animal Control, Monroe County: 56% save rat e in 2014 and a live release rate of 78%, up from 9% in 2013.

Outstanding Limited/Managed Admission Shelter with the greatest number of adoptions: (Limited/Managed admission shelter with at least a 90% save rate and with the greatest number of adoptions)

Jeff Randazzo, Chief Animal Control Officer, Macomb County

Capital Area Humane Society , Clinton County: 89% save rate in 2014 with 3553 adoptions and a live release rate of 90%.

Most Improved Limited Admission Shelter:

Charlevoix County Humane Society , Charlevoix County: 93% save rate in 2014, up from 55% in 2013.

Innovation & Best Practices Award:

Jeff Randazzo, Chief Animal Control Officer, Macomb County: Creatin g Transformational Change

MPFA is an all-volunteer organization collaborating with shelter and rescue organizations to achieve No Kill through training, technical assistance,
