A SALTS Summer to Remember!

What a summer!  Our ships, Pacific Swift and Pacific Grace, sailed on nine amazing voyages this past summer - some to new places and others to our tried and true favourite places. We sailed with incredible young people and volunteers, observed spectacular shows of wildlife, and much more. We are grateful to all those that made this another SALTS summer to remember! Here are just a few of our favourite photos and videos from summer 2014 trips (click on the images below to view more photos from this past summer on Facebook).

Bursaries for Youth with Type 1 Diabetes

"Being diagnosed with diabetes was completely unexpected and rather life-changing for me at age 16," explains Victoria resident Caleigh (pictured at left). "It seemed like a lot of work with little payoff, which is why I was so thrilled to find out there was a bursary for a 10-day SALTS sailing trip for youth with type 1 diabetes."

It was with young people like Caleigh in mind that a family decided to establish an annual bursary for youth with type 1 diabetes to sail with SALTS each summer.  The bursary, available for up to three young people age 13 - 25 with type 1 diabetes, covers the SALTS trip fee and some travel costs to and from the ship.

"Amidst the wild beauty and inspiring people on my SALTS trip, I had the chance to gain a fresh perspective on life that persists to this day," says Caleigh.

The application form for Bursaries for Youth with Type 1 Diabetes is posted at
www.salts.ca and is due December 15, 2014.

  Thanks and Thanks Again ...

Special thanks from all of us here at SALTS to:

  • The volunteers that helped lead ship tours aboard the Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift at the Victoria Classic Boat Festival on August 28.
  • Those that joined us to celebrate SALTS 40th Anniversary on August 29. It wouldn't have been the same without you!
  • Chris Raper who served on the SALTS Board from 2003 - 2014, mostly as Chairperson. Chris led with excellence during his tenure and is deeply appreciated.
  • The estate of Robert (Bob) Siddall (1926 - 2014) for a bequest towards the construction of a new schooner for SALTS. Bob was a long-time SALTS member who volunteered during the building of the Pacific Grace.
  • Nancy Siddall for a donation to the Tall Ship Maintenance Fund for Pacific Grace in memory of Robert (Bob) Siddall. This gift is also a 'thank you' from Nancy and her five U.S. grandchildren who sailed on 17 SALTS voyages from 2000 - 2008: Kyle & Riley Hawkins from St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin and Nicole, Ashley Kristen & Patrick Woods from Greentown, Pennsylvania.
  • The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation for a $100,000 grant towards SALTS bursaries (part of their $500,000 commitment over five years).
  • The JRG Family Fund at the Calgary Foundation for a grant.
  • The Wizinsky Family for a foundation grant.
  • All other donors and volunteers for your kind support!

Boat Donation Program Sends Kids to Sea

Above: Big Ben in Lahaina, Hawaii at the completion of the Vic-Maui Yacht Race.

Jim Tennant had always been interested in sailing. When it came time to purchase a boat, he included the SALTS Boat Donation Program in his search. "SALTS had the right boat
at the right time and offered the convenience of being on the west coast," explains Jim. "We knew of the great work SALTS was doing among young people and were pleased to know that in buying a boat from them, we would be supporting that work." Their purchase - the 50' Beneteau 'Big Ben' - was soon found adventuring in the waters of the west coast including completion of the Vic-Maui Yacht Race from Victoria to Hawaii. When it came time to sell 'Big Ben', Jim and his wife Patricia decided to donate the vessel back
to SALTS. "It worked out well in our situation," explains Jim. "SALTS Boat Donation Program made the process easy. We received a tax receipt for the value of the vessel and were able to continue to support the work of SALTS."

The SALTS Boat Donation Program sees generous individuals, like Jim and Patricia, donate to SALTS market-ready vessels. SALTS takes care of the details including arranging a third- party survey to determine the fair market value of the vessel. A charitable tax receipt for this amount is provided to the donor. The vessels are then sold by SALTS and the proceeds help fund sail training programs for young people aboard the Pacific Swift and Pacific Grace.

"Thousands of young people have been able to sail in our sail training program because of the generosity of those that have donated or purchased their boats through SALTS," explains David Eggert, Boat Donation Program Manager. "We are grateful."
